Somebody had mentioned about SJs versatility.I'd like to add one more number to strengthen that point.
In magalir mattum SJ sings for Oorvasi, revathi and Rohini in three diff voices and accent.
My opinion on Vani jayaram not being so successful is that she is streotypical (this is just my opinion)

Let's we take note about new comers :
Harini is one of the new + talented singer that we must noticed too.Her debut in Indra - Nila Kaikirathu was fantastic. At her younger age she should be proud of.
Another hits of her like Telephone Mani Pol,Soniya-Soniya, Konjum Manjal, Varayo Thozli from Jeans looks like she will make a permanent place in TFM. Her style is totally different from others and most of us must accept this.
Anuratha Sreeram another new comer. Her debut in TFM is also on her own style.En manathai kollaiadithavale is one of her best songs.
Sathana Sargam though came from Hindi, her popularity from Vennilave is very much appriciated.
There is a lot of new comers coming to TFM film by Film.

eeov,
Don't trouble urself. You don't have to list so many song to prove the superiority of "tahlaivi" SJ.
Anyway the songs u 've listed are just too good.

"Ithu oru nila kaalam" - Madonna pichchavaaganum ! Intha songla irukkura sensuality is truly on par with any top international pop icon. No contemporary singer is competent enough to portray so much expression in one song. She may not have a voice as sweet or perfect as LM, but she is definitely more expressive than her. As a "film music singer" she is eons ahead of LM.

srinath,
'idhu oru nilak kaalam' is a landmark for IR i should say. with this sing he proved at that time that he is not just a folk musician but is equally competent in other forms of music. this song is sort of a fusion.the interlude music is mindblowing. and the picturisation (bharathiraaja) was equally 'mindblowing' getting an A certficate for the film. the picturisation of this song was beyond its times in TFM and was on par with say MTV of that time.
from the same film latha rajnikanth has sung another pop song 'netru intha neram'which is also great stuff.

Sorry for straying from TFM, but "Kanyakumari..." from Bobbili Raaja (?) is another great sensual song by SJ. Though I don't know a word of Telugu, I sang this song for our LMT in our College Day show. I just can't imagine any of the other singers singing this song the way SJ did. I must admit, it really turned me on ! Another master-piece by IR !

Srinath, I think the Thamizh dubbing of that raucous song, if it is "Kanyakumari kalai magalthan raani...kaadhal menagai udal thanga maaligai" also has SJ singing it. Sensuality is one thing that SJ can do better than anybody.
But if you take into consideration the unwavering quality of the voice regardless of the pitch, the song's underlying emotion, pronunciation, ageless sound (one can easily tell the difference in the treble in SJ's voice between "singaaravelanae" and "megam karukkuthu mazhai vara paakkuthu" but hard to tell the difference of years in the voice between "maalaippozhuthin mayakkathilae" and "kannukku mai azhagu"), then no one can surpass P.Susheela. This is sincerely IMO.

Udhaya:
I understand your point. But from what I've heard (not heard of ;-)), there is a 'springiness' to SJ's voice that is somehow lacking in others'. I think the right word would be 'vibrant'. Maybe I haven't been listening closely to PS, but in that case how come SJ's voice prompted me to listen so closely to her's ? PS may indeed have a better voice, but I think SJ takes more trouble to put 'jeevan' into her songs - much the same way SPB does - that's why I'd call her the female (equivalent of) SPB. I haven't listened to much of SJ's carnatic based numbers. My contentions are all based on her western and semi-western numbers. They sound so authentic when she sings. The perfect complement to IR's numbers, I believe ! God (or Nature) may have been more than generous with PS. But when it comes to sheer human prowess, SJ is tops !
You called that song raucous - rather ambigous term, I would say. Were the lyrics outright disgusting in Tamizh ? Fortunately, I had to sing it in Telugu and as I didn't understand a word of it, I was free to make my own assumptions. Of course, SJ's voice helped a bit :-))). Come to think of it, the girl who sang with me was a Teluguite and much as I tried, she refused to explain the full lyrics to me ;-). Must have been really explicit !

I agree with most of the people that SJ is far
superior to any indian female singers in terms of
versatality and bringing the feeling into the song. She and SPB are the apropos and two eyes of most of IR songs. No doubt about their solo renderings. SJ has unprecedented capacity in terms of rendering the song so lively, be it is far Baby shalini or for Grandma(Any body poda poda pokkE song) Be it is semi-classical(nAn pAda varuvai song) and pop song(Oru nAL antha oru nAL from devadhai) she has shown unimaginable variations. Oh man! "maniyOsai kEttu ezhundhu" song from Payanangal mudivadhillai brings the sOgam in voice so much that SPB's iRumufying loses its power to certain extent. Anybody remember the agony in the voice for the song "Thoorathil nAn kanda un mugam" from Nizhalgal.
BTW, chitra is also good. But long way to go!

Even i do agree with all off u about the deadly voice of SJ. But the song which comes to my mind is rendered by SJ and IR.
the song is Poooooooomalaiye tholserava. In this song, when IR is singing, SJ's voice will
penetrate between the lines and the humming will come in between. Very sensational.
Her voice is definitely a thin string which can
penetrate anywher.
Hats off to SJ and her fans(me too...)
bye for now

I am a new comer to ur site even though I go through ur discussions atleast once in a week.VJ's "ennulle engo" from rosappu ravikkaikari - I think nobody will be able to sing that song so nicely. My vote is for VJ.Next is for SJ. Some more examples: Kanmaniye kathal - from Aarulirundhu 60 varai,"Kattrukkukenna veli"-avargal,"poongarre" fromkunkuma chimzh,"kathal vennila " from lakshmi vanthachuare marvellous numbers.Next , in the case of chithra, "vanthathe" from "kizhakku vasal",some songs from "en aasai machan, "aathadi ammadi" from Idhayathai thirudathe etc, especially the last one she would have sung in a different voice. But , I admit that PS 's voice is always excellent.
endrum anbudan,

Who says Vani is stereotypical. Please listen to "Naane Naana yaro thana" from Azhage Unnai arathikiren" Vani's number is superb. Fast paced song she sings for latha who is drunk.I cannot imagine anyone singing the way Vani did. She is class apart. Another song variation is the classic number from Aboorva ragangal, naadham ennum from manmatha leelai. Myhamizh paada vanthen muruganaiye vanangi nindren is also a marvellous number. Please try to change your opinion Mr Shankar.
Thanks
Veera Akkoor.

More classics of vani
"yaarathu sollamal nenjalli povathu", "Megame Megame", "Yen Kalyaana Vaibogam"
IMO all Jency's song should have gone to VJ. Somehow IR preferred Jency over VJ.

To Vani_fan,
You are 100% right. The song from Ullasa Paravaigal "Deiviga raagam" is sung by Jency. My god her voice is really awful. Why did IR take her instead of Vani?
Sunanda is better than Jency.
Thanks
Veera
