  I have heard that in most songs illayaraja does the tune first and then asks the lyricist to write. Was it the case with janani?.
  
  Anyway the first part - sloka could not have been there before (I guess?) - What about the rest of the song?.
  
  What a song and IMO a very good rendition by IR (he might not be a great singer but I doubt of any other could have brought out the 'bakthi' emotion as IR has done).
