There is supposed to be one "Panja"-something(similar
to Panjaratna kritis), which was composed with 5 rare
ragas. It was staged by KSG's troup during dec music
season a few years ago.
This concert's tape must have some more pure
classical stuff.

p.s. btw, is this Paddy of IISc? "That's all" :-)

It is called as "Panchamukhi"; If I remember correctly it was staged by Maestro himself during that december season.

I think it was Dec 31,1995 at Kamraj Hall, Madras and I attended the concert. The musician who helped Raaja in the "creation' of Panchamukhi was violin maestro V.V.Subramanian. Songs in movies based on Carnatic music, were discussed and played. Raaja himself sung two songs composed by himself and the songs were melodious and good.
He also came out with the new age/fusion part of the Panchamukhi (ie one among the five of his creations)with the help of key board/synth and Karthik Raja. What began as a typical western
modern composition later on merged with the violins of V.V.S and his group in a Crescendo and it was all standing ovation in the end. I had the privilege of attending this rare concert.

Thanks. One more question, are these carnatic classical compositions of IR and are they original meaning IR's own compositions - what recording label has this been released on?

I recently bought a cassette(BMG release) here in NJ. The kaset contains compositions by 8 different musicians. The kaset was released Dec 1997. "The spirit of Indian Freedom". The following musicians have composed:
1> Song by Lucky Ali (Brilliant)
2> Song by MM.Kreem & Chitra (Good)
3> Song by Ilaiyaraja rendered by Kamal Hassan. Decent song. No greatshakes.
4> Song by Karthik Raja (Brilliant)
5> First movement from L.Sub's Global Symphony. Too good.
6> Rap song by Baba Sehgal
7> Song by Hariharan composed by Vishal (Good)
8> Song by Remo (Not bad)

Please tell me where I can get hold of these albums....I tried for India 24 hrs in the UK, to no avail....
No one knows about Panchamughi here, except, I was told that it's the name of a Raga that IR himself coined and calls his creation.....Please give me more details. Also, please give me more details about Rajavin Ramanamaalai.....
The Mandolin Srinivas IR compositions are excellent, he's done fantastic Carnatic compositions in this.....I think it was released by Pyramid, by the name Inreco - The Classical division.....

Raja's attempt in giving classical carnatic music
was disastorous. My father was a witness to the
torture in Madras music festival couple of years
back. In fact Raja apologised to the public.

This is the biggest bs I have heard in this DF. Mr.Balu Srinivasan : On IR's classical compositions played by Mandolin U.Srinivas
listen to Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer shower encomiums on Raja.
Kalki had mentioned that if Raja devotes full time to carnatic concerts then a lot of carnatic musicians will be in trouble. (Of
course Kalki had also mentioned that Raja's voice avvaLavAga othuzhaikkavillai).

PG,
Were you there in that concert which Raja gave?
My dad was there, though he wish he wasn't.
Raja is a great film music director and to claim
him as a carnatic musician can only evoke laughter. One thing is certain. You don't know
anything about carnatic music.
regards,

Mr. Balu,
I know Raja did say that if there are some mistakes here and there, please forgive me. Thats
not an apology for the whole concert. Anyway, you
critciising PG was unwarranted. He had just quoted facts. Your father's opinion is his and in
no way represents the view of all people. Semmangudi and TRG did appreciate IR and I feel
they had no gains in appreciating him if he really
did horribly. IR may not have been like a well
established carnatic musician, but from whatever
I read, he did a decent job.

Mr Balu Srinivasan : I certainly don't know anything about carnatic music. It looks like your father knows more about carnatic music than Semmangudi & TVG & LSubs. Please forgive me.

PG! I think you got little emotional. Take it easy. I think that Balu is talking about Raja's rendering capability. As a composer, Raja is on par with all 20th century carnatic music composers.
BTW, are you enjoying EVK ? I did not hear from you after that.

On top of it, people have not even accepted compositions of great Balamuralikrishna. It will take a looooong time to accept Raja's compositions .

It is a bluff that Semmangudi appreciated raja's panchamukhi. All he said was that "edhai study pannitu dhaan enaala solla mudiyum". Please dont put words in to semmangudi's mouth.

He,
It is ironical that you guys quote kalki for your defense of raja's carnatic prowess while you criticize it for calling raja's music in dharma as "junk". All a matter of convenience, eh!

Mr PG,
Do you know that according to Semmangudi, carnatic
music just lacks the same dedication as Hindustani music. This he told after enjoying a concert of
Praveen Sultana in Madras. According to him carnatic vocals just don't put the same hours of
practice as their Hindustani counterparts do.
Now are you going to agree to this also ?
Thru a friend of mine (who is Lalgudi Jayaram's nephew), I have once talked to Lalgudi about
Raja. While he said that "raja is a god given talent", he never said that Raja is an authority
on carnatic music (which Raja fans claim here).
Lalgudi just said good things about Raja, nothing more, nothing less.
BTW Lalgudi and Raja know each other well and Raja does meet him once in a couple of months. In fact
when HTNI was released, Raja gave the first album
to Lalgudi.
I donno who started this crap that Raja is an authority on carnatic music. :-(
Hope this clarifies.

Balu :
I don't think that anybody claims that IR is an authority on carnatic music.
OTOH to claim that IR's foray into carnatic music was disastrous is not based on facts. The fact remains that they were well recieved. Your father is entitled to his opinion but they do alter the reality.
Sridhar Seetharaman :
I will call you. EVK is great !
