There are too many to list, because most of raja's work is excellesnt. But the one I'm really fond of is the opening scene of Priyadarshan's "Gopura Vasalile"(Karthik, Bhanupriya). Fantastic, amazing compostion. Give me some of your favorite examples of raja's bgm.

I was watching 'Aaan Paavam' (Pandyarajan, Pandiyan, Seetha, Revathi). There is a situation where Pandyan gives his wrist watch to seetha.. she takes it home and the next day she comes back to return the watch. I was just stunned to hear the BGM in that situation for 5 minutes. A wonderful, Classical piece of work by Raja.

Raja has scored a lot of wonderful BGMs over the years. Well, my favorites are many. But they are not coming to the mind right now. But I can tell u a few ...
1.Mouna Ragam,Idyatthai thirudathey...
Infact all the Mani Ratnam movies, Raja has scored excellent BGMs
2.Moonrampirai,..
once again all the Balu mahendra novies...
and many more ...
If you haven't listened to K.Vishvanath's 'Salangai Oli','Sippikul Muthu'-BGMs, do listen to them. Because IR has done some sparkling/catchy /appropriate bits with the classy 'Vennai' in number of occasions. Actually the list is long. I will post in the next response.
Thanks.
Regards,
craze.

Would like to add tik, tik, tik where Raja has really worked hard for the BGM (and promptly released those bits in the LP record of `ninaivellAm nithyA'. That disc also had the title music of `ullAsappaRavaigaL')...each one is a beauty...
- From: eden (@ 210.214.4.71)
on: Sun Dec 9 04:47:44 EST 2001
I think even the songs of tik..tik..tik were quite classy. `nEtRu indha nEram'...I can never hear it enough, `idhu oru nilAkkAlam'...people who shower praises on today's MD's for innovations should first hear this and understand where all such ideas originated & `poo malarndhida'...beautiful fusion song! (BR made a mess of all these songs in picturisation, IMO)

Dear Friends
I can add many more in this topic. Let me touch
some pictures which has touched me whole heartedly.
BR's - KADALORA KAVITHAIGAL
MAHENDRAN'S - UTHIRI POOKKAL
BALU MAHENDRA'S - PRATHAP'S (PSYCHE MOVIE)
K BALACHANDAR'S - SINDHU BAIRAVI & P.P.ARTHANGAL
MANIVANNAN'S - NOORAVATHU NAAL
KAMAL'S - RAJA PAARVAI
AND SO ON AND ON ....
& the list is endless

sorry eden that was a spelling mistake what I meant was 'VEENAI'.
I totally agree with you on 'Tik tik tik'.
People should admire such songs and the BGMs.
The BGMs between the stanzas of 'Idhu oru nila kalam' are excellent bits.very catchy and unforgettable.
And also the 'Poo malarnthida' song an excellent example of Raja's fusion works.
M.Madhan Raj has mentioned an another set of movies. I agree with them
the Balu mahendra's - Prathap's - 'Moodu Pani'. The BGM is very good.
Also the Prathap pothan directed movie - 'Meendum oru kadhal kadhai' - has a wonderful BGM of Raja's and also one excellent melodious catchy song - 'Athikalai nerame puthithana ragame'. (If you haven't listened to this please do.)
I just feel happy that so many people on the net appreciate Raja's BGM works. It is great
Thanks to Raj for starting such a wonderful thread.

hollywood trend la why dont our tamil film makers tooo avoid songs in the movie and release film track (bgm) alone as cassette esp when the music of the film is ilaiyaraja, bcoz with others intha idea work out aagathu :)

I fully agree your statement. But listen the same bgm, repeatedly navigates throughout the movie in different intruments and tempos. Itz amazing, a great tune made so simple. Here is where ARR differs greatly. He makes a simple tune great, while IR makes great tunes simple.
Then, Try Moga mul. The ultimate / optimum use of Veena, Violin & Tabla in style.

cannot tell which is best ...all are great ....music is language for IR that he uses to convey the scene to the audience in a melodious way....why ...........take for example KONJI PESALAM in recent movies..... ultimate background music....and his latest telugu movie SHIV SHANKAR....the hero mohan babu ...after listening to BGM said neither in past nor in future will there be anyone who can beat IR........
for the worst of worst movies also RAJA scored ultimate class BGMs....so difficult to pick

it is surprising that nobody mentioned Aboorva Sagodharargal BGM......... wow that is the best BGM in tamil films in my view.... esp in climax scene where the action music transforms into sentimental music ........ no words to describe .. i guess even ilaiyaraja liked his music in that film thatz why he reused the same in Guna
