Hi, my name is aparna. i'm doing a project work on special effcets used in tamil film songs. i would like to know, whether these computer generated special effects have any appeal on the audience. besides beinga value addition for the movie, what other response such sequences evoke? especially computer generate graphics in shankars movies?

Computer generated effects do surely earn special attention-be it in the song picturisation or in the song itslef.I mean modulation of voice.A lot of english albums have them.Looking at the voice, you will find it difficult to guess whether it is a female voice or male voice.there are lot such albums.it is only a matter of time that these techniques will be used in TFM.As u said, graphics in song picturisation is no more a new thing to TFM.
It is edging towards a era where anyone with a poor voice can sing well with modulation. ofcourse, true talent is matchless!

Hi aparna!
What is ur project actually about. "Computered generated effects" - please elucidate. Has it got to do something with speech processing. Something like speech synthesis, voice
recognition or auto-regressive modelling of speech process.
Do you do research in technical field or general survey. I would
like to know ur department if ur studying. I am a 3rd yr B.Tech.
in E & ECE and may be I may be of some help to u. Please visit my
forum "Music Composition using a computer(composing and synthesing
using a computer)" and "I want to learn music (carnatic music) how
should I begin". Drop in constructive suggestions and authentic
information. Please do publicise to ur friends about music composition and ask ppl. to share their views with me.

aparna,
Here is my 2 cents:
I think computer graphics in Tamil movies should not be mixed in any movie. I think it will be great if they comeup with a movie which is geared towards graphics (eg from Hollywood - Terminator 2 G.Park etc.) . I don't like it when they use graphics in a good love story etc. Shankar useually distrubs things with graphics (eg ennavale ennavale song in Kathalan)

Most of the FX used i our Tamil films IMO seem to say "Me Too, Me too!" and nothing else.
What would be nice is to effectively use it to create a background, to add an expensive(or unavailable) prop to the scene etc. One should NOT be able to make out that it's computer generated. Now, that's what it is Quality computer graphics all about.
I was surprised to note that the scene in the Oscar-winning Italian film, 'Life Is Beautiful' where Roberto Benigni sees the bodies being exhumed in the far-end of the street is a combination of painting on canvas and computer-generated effects.
The regular stuff being dished out in Shankar-type movies or Telugu Nagamma movies is pathetic. Yes, some of the item-numbers that used FX like the Muqabala song did create a lot of enthusiasm amongst the public, but as for quality stuff...
And I did like the Susmita Sen number where they have used an Ad film camera technique to create the still object. But to come-out of the plastic looking tacky CG stuff, and produce real good FX they still have a long way to go.
Can you imagine sending Jeans as India's official entry to the Oscars, on the premise taht it has Hollywood-standard content!!!!
I think it's Vijay Amritraj's clout that did it.
It's true that it has to start somewhere, so that they can improve, but don't hype it so much that people get sick of it.
Anyway, I feel that if at all the directors want to use graphics, let them use in their promos on TV and of course, on the Net!

neels?
what is that sushmita as still object?
I think she is just standing still..
Usualy that technique is used with more dynamic things like splash water, jumping humans etc.
why for sushmita who can stand still herself?

She freezes, while a circular movement is captured around her. The other 'objects' in the background are moving, I think. I don't know if they used the technique of capturing the shot instantly using many cameras located on a large radius/arc, as they did in an Adidas ad featuring Sachin Tendulkar. In such shots, care must be taken to ensure that no camera falls in the view of another.
There's a Bally Sagoo video featuring Suchitra Pillai called 'Dil Cheez' that used a similar technique.

If they had used it, they would have gone for some more dramatic stuff. if other object moves then its not used. The a co-inventor of this technique gave a lecture in our CG class in our institute!. Very pain full stuff.. like about 25 cameras will be used at a time.

Neels: Is this effect the same as the one in the Gap ad ("gap" khaki ad?)...

sfx is more or less used as value addtion in tamil movies. v r still at experimental stage. since songs and dance play an important part in indian movies, i think computer graphics is added to enhance the glamour part. do u think that without these computer graphics , the songs seq would have been better? especially the seq in shankar's movies

Aparna
Here are some songs that would have been better without any CG gimmiks:
Ennavale Ennavale : Kaadhalan
Kannodu Kaanbadellam : Jeans (such a beautiful classical number was spoiled by the tacky FX)
'TADA' and 'Maaya Machindra' from Indian : the FX added Nothing to the songs. At least 'Mudalvane' had a story to tell, that made sense-about 'forces' that prevent the heroine from having a good time with the hero.
I believe TR's latest film also had some horrible graphics thrown in.
If used in small measures, it's usually effective: like the 'Chiku Buku' and 'Muqabla' numbers. I would add to this list the last sequence of 'KappaleriPoyachu' (Indian) that had the hero and heroine morphing into different Indian costumes. When Mani Ratnam tried the StarWars inspired song in Anjali, it was effective, but the obviously outline-revealing 'Chroma' shots and 'pyro techniques' showed poor quality.

digression-
I feel CG should be more used for safety of stunt men than for gimmiks. Also scenes like traffic jam in Mudhalvan are welcome.
Recently a Art director in suntv gave statements like 'its not so useful, it will give a hefty bill, its only for big budget movies, we can make movies without it, it is all extra in movie making'. This shows the ignorance and lack of enthu to learn in the film industry. In many ways one can reduce the cost of movie if CG is use properly. But sabu syril said it has lot of future and he has got a comp at home with latest software!.
A recent song in mugavari has good CG (Nutrande..) though its sort of gimmik, it was sync with theme and lyric. (like lyric goes let school kids carry little load in new century and
scene goes like kids entering a portal and comes out with CDs and ajit singing in the background, lot better than tigers and babies morphing in to the Heros).

what about the animation in Aalavandhaan?
the sequences where they switch between real life and animated versions of kamal and kitu gidwani are totally cool.
especially the bloodbath during Manisha's killing.
for once "graphics" were used quite effectively..IMO.

I think computer effects in Indian films look incredibly amateurish and stupid.
