My idea is not to discuss about who is best among Rajini and Kamal. But have any body have any idea who had most of the best songs in TFM? Both have taken lot care and gave enough importance for songs in their films. I think IR was the MD for most of their movies.

Kamal has a unique taste when it comes to songs or BGM in his movies. He sits down with Raja during the song recording and contributes some useful tips (this-wud-be-better,that-wud-be-better kinds)which Raja readily accepts.
He's got some knowledge (or i wud say, "rasanai")in music. I don't find this in Rajni's songs.
U can classify rajnikanth's songs as pre-superstar and post-superstar movies of his.
In his pre-super star movies , the songs were to the taste of the MD and director and NOT according to Rajni's specifications.
some examples are
1.Agaya gangai (Dyudhdham)
2.kAtrodu poo urasa (pokkiri raja)
3.kanmaniye kAdhal enbadhu (6-60)
4.rAmanin moganam (netrikkann)
5.thAzham poove vAsam veesu (kai kodukkum kai)
6.Ennada pollatha vazhkai(thappu thalangaL -MD VBaskar)
7.Oru poomarathile (kazhugu)
8.ennuyir needhAne (priya)
and more...
In post-superstar era, songs were made for him.
Junk songs like "soooper staaaru yaarunu kEttA..." were more and songs from the contemporary movies were not upto the mark. Even Raja wasn't an exception for this though he tried his best to maintain his standards.
Songs from vElaikkaran ,paNakkAran, dharmadurai, pandiyan etc were OK and certainly they didn't have the quality of pre-super star songs. U can't blame the MDs for that. Songs were made for him and the scope for the MD to show his capabilities were less (though exceptions like veera were there).
Of late the trend is almost the same in all his movies.
One dappanguthu (thathuva !!)song as an introduction, one or 2 duets one "soga" song has been the trend in his movies.
OTOH, kamal's songs have not detoriated over time.
kamal's can be classified as pre-rAjapArvai and post-rAjapArvai (that's the movie wherefrom kamal started taking part in music discussions with Raja) eras.
In pre-rajapArvai, it was upto the directors and MDs to decide how the songs shud be.Luckily ,MSV, Raja and others were at their peak when Kamal and Rajni were introduced which resulted in good songs.
From Raja pArvai to Nammavar ,esp on those films produced by Rajkamal,he's made sure that he gives quality songs (with few exceptions). He's properly utilised his 'say' in churning out good songs whereas Rajnikanth didn't capitalise on that.

I guess Shankar has about summed it up all ! Good one, Shankar !
In the late 70s and in the 80s, rather than Rajini songs or Kamal songs, it was actually a case of MSV songs or IR songs. But with people achieving Super stardom subsequently, this balance seems to have been eroded to the present situation.
Today, Rajini's films have less(no) focus on music (on anything for that matter, except on himself !). The Rajini movies of yesteryears had a lot of variety - there were movies like Johny, Kai Kodukkum Kai, etc. which had soft themes. Today, he seems to have paid the price for being branded as the Super Star, and has got caught in the "image" constraints. Thus, the scope for versatility and variety of Rajini the actor has suffered a blow, and has had to give way to Rajini the star. As a result, nothing else seems to find a place in his films (that includes music as well).
Kamal, on the other hand, seems to have avoided being cast in a mould of any kind, and has thus managed to have the freedom of creativity. (That he makes a mess of it sometimes is, of course, another matter !).
Perhaps, it is for this reason that IR has (virtually) stopped working for Rajini films, of late. Interestingly, I read in "Kalki" that even ARR was rather reluctant to accept the offer of working in "Padaiyappa" !

the main difference between kamal and rajini's films is for whom the music is made. in rajini's case, the music is made for his fans. he knows them well and the music is catchy and lacks nuances. it needs to be appealing and needs grandeur. whereas, in kamal's films , the music is for the film and for enriching it. the music needs to blend with the film like in devar magan , guna(the song in hyd red light area being so realistic), mahanadhi etc. the music has a direction and a specific purpose. this is what separates kamal films from rajini's films. but, i won't agree that the restriction in rajini's case is his image as a superstar. IR was bold enough to compose a song in veera which was not the least bit in rajini's style ( konji konji alaigal aada), which turned out to be an all-time great song. so, it depends on the MD. if the MD is not good to hold his own in a rajini's film, all that we will find is "achukku naa achukku than".

thanks to deva rajni's films have now a standard
pattern for songs (adding to shankar's posting):
1 'da' song ( autokaaran da, vanden da, adanda idaanda etc.)
1 carnatic based song ( which is always mediocre like nagumo or thangamagan etc.)
1 fast paced duet (alli anarkali, thillana, azhagu etc.)
1 soga song( oru vennpura, vidukathaiya etc.)
another gap filling duet ( vedavalli, kuluvaalile etc. with lots of extras dancing)
his films as well as the music have become predictable.
