Anand, cosmician.. i remember reading in raajangahm that IR is planning to start an academy (music research senter) outside madras... so this aspect (passing on knowledge) is certainly not lacking in IR !

An interesting tidbit from IR's new book Paal Nila Padhai:
IR talks about his association with John Scott and Michael Townend, during the recording of the Symphony.
He says he spoke to John Scott in 2000 again, asking whether he can come for the recording of HeyRam with Budapest Symphony. Though John Scott wished much so, he had to regret his not coming, bcos of other recording commitments.
But he told Raja 'I still listen to your Symphony, when I get a creative block. Even 2-3 days back also, I was humming your melodies while going for my walk'.

Coming back to the thread title, 'Whatever happened to IR's symphony'? We've been asking this to ourselves, to IR, to fellow IR-fans et all for so many years now that it has sorta lost its topicality. This should be the best time to release it...maybe clash it with Bombay Dreams to let people of TN take pride in their 2 gems going international!

Mystery becomes Maestro. I am not hard guessing any more, so I am making some psyche-logical reasoning (it is going to be a new branch of science after this) to make some reasonable deductions. As the mystery is, why hasn't the Maestro released the Symphony? Avarhal etharhaku londonikku ponen? Maatruthukka illey Kaattruthukka? Thirahmayahai Kaahttruthukku not Maatruthukku. So, that is the basic premise.
Our Maestro composed a Symphony to showcase his extraordinary abilities to the world and so used London as the centrestage. The Maestro did everything right until something did not feel right at the end! Every genius will not stake his reputation and energy to be belittled by one neglected area of the entire effort that was the object of his determination.
IR is an extremely balanced genius yet very sensitive, though many may have mistake these qaulities for eccentricity. (It is a defense to help in the unabated flow of his creativity. No distractions, controversies should over challenge IR unnecessarily. He let the vast range of his talent to detract and quieten all kinds of criticisims at any given point!!!) Mozart was eccentric, so left early, but not IR who employed rationale and worked his mind through all hours to achieve what he did.
Now all the effect of all that achievemnet he would not have wanted washed out in just one symphonic stroke of the baton. Indeed, IR also found that something was not right with the symphony and so it did not justify a release that would totally gone to undermine his achievements and bring down his market value. Plus, his sons careers were just blossoming and IR would not have liked any negative market value for the symphony world wide and in India to affect his children's opportunities. So, I am guessing that IR was protecting a lot of interests, his, his childrens. And, I feel this symphony could go unreleased until IR has a solution such as the following:
Composed another symphony to tide over the criticism of the earlier symphony
Composed a couple more symphonies to pass off (what is that marketing term, cross-sell or something?) the first by now neglected Symphony.
or,
Has been waiting for more offers to compose symphonies from abroad.
About the quality of the symphony, from the last supposition, I fear that the work may not have been remarkable or it may have been too revolutionary for Western audience. For Indian audience, who knows anything about a Symphony and who would care when all they can appreciate was O Ja Rangeela Re!
Also, I feel IR may feel that his effort was unique and no appreciation of it would be possible currently unless the world was made 'eager' to get it. Which means, a great lable like Sony or a great producer calling IR to produce more Symphonies. So far no such thing has happened, except that we have seen the Queen Mother visit Chennai in 1996 and Webber inviting Rahman, both I feel definitive outcomes of word of mouth work of IR's Symphonic work with the elite at London.
But, my question is, why hasn't offers poured in from anywhere? Only IR seems to be calling the Hungarian Orchestra or others and it does not seem to be the other way around.
Basically, IR likes to be in control. I feel he is not in control regarding the audience for the work, so he is controlling it by not permitting the release.
My opinion, looking at IR's works in the times since 1985, this Symphony must be extraordinary work and IR wants to make money out of it and mostly achieve international recognition at the right time. I think he must have decided that the right time is not come yet because kids and the audience are playing around now with computers. Once that fad is over, I bet IR will himself release it with the right producers supporting it.
So, when is that likely? My prediction is not this April or May 2002 when most of the planets are aligning in various geometrical designs. But, definitely before 2005. Right now, the Maestro is, I can feel it, still focusing on some undone musical works (nothing new may come out until the last minute, anyway, maybe a few minutes the second symphony maybe born just then!!) Mostly the father that he is, after the marriage of Ms. Bhavatharini. (No, I am not going that further in time, when the Maestro will want to see his grandchildren also married. This will not end...)
Bottomline: Before May 2005!

I remember hearing him trying to buy an old palace somewhere in Kottayam, Kerala for that purpose. I am not very sure, but I am sure I read it in a Malayalam daily around 3 or 4 years ago. Anybody, can confirm it?

Venkat, go to any decent music shop and you'll find these two albums. If you want to know where they are available on net, they are put up on live365.com. But, try and buy the CDs / Cassettes.... Maestro's music is best heard on CDs for better appreciation of its quality and orchestration.
