Hello friends,
It's me again. And this time, I met IR alongwith another newtfmpage regular, CSG. Unlike the previous occasion, when there was no scope for a chat, today we sat and talked with IR for about...god knows, time stood still, guys. We have no clue.
There were so many things we wanted to ask him, but in his presence, both of us were tongu-tied. Finally CSG found his voice and complimented him on his latest album, Bharati.
He's so incredibly down-to-earth and accessible. And he doesn't spout profundities, but speaks just like you would expect any layman to. That's his greatness. I'm still on a tremendous high....

venkatesh,
what more did you expect? of course, i could have asked him about the symphony, but i wasn't sure how he would react. there are a million things i still have to ask him, but this was my first meeting. maybe if i get to meet him again, probably on a professional level, then i could provide more info.

Cram,
Iam happy that IR mentioned the name of Madanmohan. He was one of the greatest composers who unfortunately didnt get his due to the fact he wasnt making music for big banners, a situation somewhat similiar to what IR himself is in now. i read an article only yesterday on the net written by madanmohan's son in which he had said how deeply his father was hurt by the fact that was underappreciated. he also said that the great classic 'aap ke nazron samjha' by lataM was composed by madanmohan on a trip from the first to fifth floor in an elevator!!!
As IR said when u listen to his songs evn today they retain their freshness to the core. abolutely brilliant melody. unfortunately we dont even find shaded of that brilliance in hindi film music today.
also iam somewhat put off by IRs constant philosophical answers to questions like whether he chooses the raga before composing etc. even i had wanted to know that for quite sometime. he could have given a straightforward answer, but then he is IR;))

hi guys this is csg here, as cram has told you about our meet with ilayaraja i do not have anything to say, but one point is being proved that IR is not only a musician but also a man of philosophical ideas, for eg:when i asked him about mohanam ragam, he said that 'athu anth nerathula thana varuthu, ana enna mohana ragam sugamana ragam athanala atha meendum meendum kekkanumnu thonum, ippo neenga oru edathila nikkerenga anga nalla kathu veesuthu antha katha vendamnu solli vera edathila poi nippingala? atha mathiri than mohana ragam'this was his explanation.

Csg,
mohanam - meendum meendum ketka thonum- agreed. but still that doesnt explain why raja decided to compose all those songs in that raga? is it because even he liked it so much or is it because he thought that we would like those songs so much?
next time around u should ask him on the absemnce of orchestration and natural instruments from his songs these days and his heavy bias reg. mallu movies. what were the situations in yaathramozhi that inspired him to give those melodies like ponveyilil etc.? were they any different from that seen in tamil movies?

csg,
Which Mohanam songs are you talking about?
What were his comments on his latest projects like
Bharathy, Pandavas, etc? Will he continue doing more routine Tamil film stuff in future also?

MS,
Raja definitely has the modesty to
comment many times that composing film
music is not a big job after having
composed for every possible variety
of song.
He definitely doesn't have the modesty
(if you want to call it that way) of some
of today's composers who claim that they
have never copied from anyone eventhough
it is very well known that they copy
from every composer indian/foreigner
regularly.
Also Raja has expressed his appreciation
for MSV, KVM, SG so many times (atleast
in all the interviews that I have seen
and read). May be Mr.RJ has to read
those interviews.
Even in this case, he must have told that
to cram and CSG.

Why does IR have no good words for ARR. Is ARR THAT bad?
- From: nvd (@ bkj-cache82.jaring.my)
on: Mon Jul 24 23:00:24 EDT 2000
Well KITKAT,
IR had and will always appreciate the young MDs today and their contribution to the TFM. Of course, he had commented badly on songs like Pettai Rap, mayB out of frustration!:-) In all his interviews, IR have shown respect to MSV etc. for their seniority..same as he shown to Beethoven, Bach, Mozart etc. It is usual that great people always pay respect to their seniors and encourage their predecessors in one way or another. Even in one of IR's stage show or personal interview (I'm not sure), He have commented good things about ARR's 'Chinna Chinna Asai'(from ROJA). It is not all necessary for IR, as a great music personality in INDIA today, to go out and shout about young MDs' achievements. In fact, it is the yound MDs' responsibility to talk great things about their master, as IR did for MSV, Mozart etc. Young MDs today have their own way to climb up the stairs to reach global recognition (such as copying MJackson's tune etc.)
This is why, I think, IR keeps away from media interview or publicity for sake of eradicating unwanted comments about him in regard to his predecessors.

RJ!
When once asked about MSV, IR replied `India'vin migapperiya isai mEdhaikaLil oruvar'! (Cinema Express interview)
On another occasion (A Vikatan), when asked about Dhakshinamoorthy (IR's guru), he said `andha mEdhaiyakkuRiththuppEsa enakku arugathai illai'! This also carried a picture of the veteran with IR...
IR's philosophical statements , IMHO, probably earned him the so called `egoistic' & `arrogant' kind of reputation...I don't think any of us or those termed him like that are even remotely qualified to make such assesments! The truth is he is possibly in a much elevated position in thinking and intellectual capabilities that an ordinary person often cannot comprehend or digest ...this conclusion of mine is partly infleunced by his extra-ordinary approach to music:-)

Oh! So u need to be a beethovan , bach or mozart or at least MSV or Dakshinamoorthy to get a praise from IR. Mortals are not worth a word of praise :-) (Just kidding) Dont pounce on me.
(In @ 7 to 8 years of ARR's presence only one or two occasions have come for IR to appreciate ARR's talents. One was when ARR gave a modhiram during MSV's celebration at madras. This I remember. )

Venkatesh,
nice digging to bring out that thread;)) IR has praised old hindi music composers like madan mohan , naushad etc. in that interview(rightfully so) and to me personally it makes me delightful that he has praised the same MDs whose music I adore;)
Definitely hindifilm music of the 50s and 60s was the greatest in terms of sheer melody. i dont think anyone could have escaped its impact and influence, and IR seems to be no exception.

when i was listening to bharati today i had a doubt that the ragams compsed for the songs must be taken directly from the collection'bharatiyar kavdhaigal'because as everybody bharatiar was not only a great poet but also had good training in classical music,if you gus have read BK you can see name of the ragam mentioned on top of every kavithai,i know that guys out there will be in 'bayanagara kovam'for telling me this, but try to understand guys that THIS IS MY HUMBLE OPINION'

CSG
If he had done so, I don't think it is wrong, it maintains Bharathy's emotions. After all, the brief to IR was to keep Mahakavi's spirit in the compositions.
