It is fact that a dozen players on stage cannot reproduce the same 'layering' as ARR's original scores. But that doesn't automatically mean that it is easy for IR's scores to be reproduced on stage either. I have seen Ilaya Nila lead fumbled on stage enough times to understand that lack of layers alone do not make a song any easier to play - quite contrary to what Geetha's statement implies ! :-)
Srikanth has made a very valid point about sounds and loops being more difficult to reproduce than the actual musical score.

I can only say that in old shows of GA/IR, the music was of a quality that could be reproduced easily on stage
Not just the old shows, ask any NEW band to play `vizhiyilE malarndhadhu' in the same authentic way (I mean exact reproduction) & I'll salute them:-)

For me the fun of watching an orchestra is two fold:
See individual musicians playing their parts expertly.
See how the token switches from one part to
another seemlessly, giving the seemless
output.
Sequence-playing deprives me of both these pleasures. (Sequencer does its
best with 1/64th notes! It is often
the whole notes and double notes(?) that
humans excel in!)
I come from a town, which is famous for
its April poochoriyal (flower festival for the
local Goddess). What was the most fascinating
part was on that day, in various parts of the
town, 10 to 12 orchestra troups would play
film music concerts. We would figure out which
ones started first and go there at say 7 pm
and keep moving from one to another, until say
2 or 3 am when all would close.
Watching the instruments and the players
playing was our first view into how a score is
put together. I am sure many of us from TNadu
would have had this fun.
Watching an orchestra is only the next best
thing to playing in one!

I have seen Ilaya Nila lead fumbled
....normally we use a guitarist for live programs not a "cotton beater", 95% of the (realtime)guitarist I know plays this score pretty well
:):)))
the Most complex pieces of raja are his string sections, the famous one I know is ananda ragam sung by uma ramanan.....I wish I had one more hand, simply a thalasuthal string section.
since this is a arr related page :),
one of the good complex piece of arr is sambo sambo in pudhya mugam.
being a msv fan (hehe:), the accordian piece in the second bgm (i think) in pachai kilii muthucharam
:))

Srikanth:
Unfortunately, almost every single lead guitarist that I played with has fumbled this piece somewhere or the other :-) I made the point about this lead because it is not very complex or layered, but is still no joke performing on stage. I think the mere fact that all eyes would be on the guitarist at that point makes him very nervous :-) Everybody played it perfectly off-stage during practice sessions, FYI !
OTOH, I used to play with a keyboardist called Joseph Ambrose (who was the 3rd keyboardist for AVR for a short period of time !!!). Ambrose was from Anna Univ. and quite famous for his Madai Thiranthu and Sangeetha Megham string pieces in inter-college culturals :-)
My point is that excellence can be found everywhere. But to brush off good performances like Geetha did is not fair.

Hi,
Well, well..
I have been looking at various comments about loops, sequences, DAT and LIVE PROGRAMS! (note the CAPITALS).
There are certain advantages and disadvantages of doing a live show: (BTW, I am talking from an instrumentalist point of view, since I am a keyboard player more than a singer)
Advantages:
1. people on stage have real fun, playing the pieces
2. we can improvise various pieces (make it more jazz-based :-)). Going by this statement, no piece is played wrong. It can always be hidden under the word "improvisation" (including the ilaya nila guitar piece). One of my friends who plays the guitar (MaheshKumar) always says that no note is every played wrong. It can just be played at the wrong time :-)
3. some mistakes are so hilarious that we remember them for our lifetimes. I have done that atleast on two occasions so far (song has 3 interludes, but I just stop after 2 and the song comes to an end abrubtly). Its real fun to watch the expression of the singer (once it was a hate look in the bay area, and recently (in fetna program), it was all smiles (rajaG, any comments?) ;-)
4. instrumentalists and singers sync, making mistakes and getting them right is a wonderful (but painstaking) exercise. The more we play live, the better our quality of playing will become (this is equivalent to saying 'paada paada raagam')
5. Can give a wrong pitch to the singer, and enjoy looking at him, singing at an uncomfortable pitch (I've done this too, once) but was certainly not my fault, you see ;-)
Disadvantages:
1. Time - obviously, it takes a lot of effort to practise to pieces and time is of the essence
2. Have to remember all pieces (or note it down in some piece of paper to carry along).
If you being charting out the advantages and disadvantages of sequencing (similarly), I am sure you'll find that advantages of playing live outnumber those of sequenced ;-) This is my opinion.
If a person gets into sequencing mode, then he/she depends on the tools (like StepEdit in cakewalk) to record complicated fast pieces. But, going by my own experience, I used to sequence (with srikanth) before. But, personally, I feel that the playing capability increases if you stay away from it (may not be totally) but practice to play live too.

A small clarification:
Whatever I've expressed above (with respect to step-record sequencing limiting your live playing capabilities), is taking into account my own experience (and not Srikanth's).
I have see srikanth in action during sequencing
and he uses the sequencing software alright, but plays the pieces live and records it (and not steprecord like I used to do).

Geetha,
I had meant to ask you about this show a several months ago but kept forgetting.
Anyhow, I still think that fooling people like that is unnecessary. If the tracks are going on, then why are the musicians acting like they playing? Cinema-vila thaan kaasuvaangi kaathula poosuthuraanganra ingayumma?:-) I have some questions though, and I am wondering if you know the answers.
1) A few people have pointed out that ARR faked his Mustafa and Vande Mataram numbers, in the Dubai show, and I think Mustafa was faked in the Malaysia one as well, is that true?
I wonder how much you know about the show in Toronto?
Is it going to be mostly tamil songs or Hindi songs?
later...

on: Fri Jul 14 11:20:08 EDT 2000
Srikanth says even if he uses the same keyboards as ARR he cannot get the same sound. I think one can apply filters on top of a track. Add to that the reverb/spatial effects (Somebody mentioned ARR uses Q-Sound plugins, you know Q-Sound is known for 2-channel surround sound). In Iruvar (one/or the finest recording in TFM) has a drum sound moving from the left side to the right, very realistically. This surely is not the reduce level on left/increase on right technique. This was surely spatial processing. Finally the whole CD is mastered very well to even out the frequency spectrum and may have been compressed as well. Well, try to do all these things live !!!!
Anyways, live performances matter only for real instruments. Was there a string section in the Dubai concert ? And a drum set for Sivamani ? what for ? :)
(BTW, Srikanth gave an interesting reason why IR is called a composer :) )

Kiru.
Most of the above processing can be done only on static data, like it has to be captured digitally (as .wav), that is the reason he records it even for live show.
Once it comes into the hard drive, man you have "n" number of tools to make it sound better.
Best (joke or) part is most of the tfm musicians has access to these cool tools, But however the source (music scores) that comes into the hard drive has to be good.
Many people (who else - deva) take directly from CDs, like we can move data digitally from a CD to any hard disk recorder using the S/PDIF Digital I/O, a simple RCA cable that transfer data as 0's and 1's between 2 digial machines.
---ok I am stopping here, hard disk recording is is a big topic....:)
Kiru, one more think have you noted this in mustafa mustafa:
hear how the lead guitar parts move around the stereo specturm, he has done this is to get a live show effect, very good imagination.
