Very interesting to learn that Lata Mangeshkar does not like Western Pop music. She has been in the music field for over 60 years and goes to show how much people, whether they are the elite or the poor, would limit their thinking and understanding that result in propogation of prejudices (such as what we see in cruder forms in politics and religion) RSS, SIMI - (in these two institutions, very highly educated bigots are funding "hate" propoganda, churches.
My question is, are TFM fans open minded, I know IR fans are the most educated about music and they have a high sense of appreciation abilities, but i don't see that in Hindi film msuci or Rahman fans. Am I right or wrong? Music' purpose is to liberate not tie us down, bring us closer to realization, the divine, not pin us down to familiar passions.... In 2003, where do TFM fans stand ? Are the majority open to new ideas or is there is a stronger minority continuing to believe that other composers, others forms, other languages are a problem?!

just by that single sentence "i said i don't like" made us to think that LM has "limited thinking and/or understanding" even after being in film music for 40+ years? how can we infer that she is not open to western pop. she has expressed her dislike to that, thats all. Its her personal taste. An open minded person does not mean that one should not have any personal liking or disliking towards other form. An open minded person means one who does not spread hatred to others towards what one does not like.
Now, Rahmaan fans are suppossed to be the likers of the latest western popish kind of songs, then how come by the same yardstick(that measured LM as non openminded for her dislike to western pop) Rahmaan fans are not openminded?

The logic baffles me, Kupps. Lata is approached by Gere to spread awareness of AIDS - influential Lata can just say the word and it helps. so, by that linear thinkin, Lata can indeed influence people with her dislikes. My point in this thread is: so many years in music, how can one not like other forms of sound? isn't that making a form of music a religion? in the land of spirituality?
pure Rahman fans, visiting this forum for last few years, n personal friends are pretty much not musically savvy, just listening to pop or rock doesn't make one savvy listeners. main issue is: when someone gets stuck to something that becomes religion, exception as noted in the introduction.
nothin else... just that rediff article kinda intrigued me and felt what is good music and what is bad depends on individual knowledge and prejudices - imho music is absolute feeling not a relative thing and it should please anyone thru any form if they know its purpose.
well, this thread can sound boring / irritating if continued further...

If Lata does not like Western pop music, its her choice. In any case, much of the western music these days thrives on vulgar videos full of nude scenes, terrible and gaudy dance sequences and unbearably high-pitched singing in chorus. There is nothing much to be enjoyed in it, IMO. There is also no need to make a hullabaloo out of what Lata likes or dislikes. Just because she was in the music field for 60 years does not mean that she has to like EVERYTHING. Many of the veteran singers totally dislike modern film music. They have the right to express what they like or dislike.
Lastly, this is a MUSIC forum. Please do not discuss POLITICS here.

This is still not telling me what does TFM means. And what we need to do to kill the sea lamprey. Why is the sea lamprey so important to kill and what bacteria does it put into the sea lamprey?

The logic s**ks.
I have seen many of the IR fans are close minded - they try to define music per IR's method - I can not accept it - I wonder whether they even listen to other artist works.
I want to differ in one more point - I think music is about passion than anything else. I believe you can not generate good music with out passion. (Is that what lacking in IR's music recently?)
