PRIYANKA, SINGARAVELAN, VEERA & RAASAIYYA!!!!!!!!

Has anyone heard all 5 songs of Priyanka? Out of this world, melodious, supermelodious and such consummate songs with brilliant interludes. Same with Raasaiyya songs - but i think this one was made in Hindi movie mode (i think in Hindi as Chhaila, the songs sounded like the best Hindi album I've ever heard and how is that those radio stations in Bombay downplay IR? ) Anybody feel the same about Raasaiyaa, because the tunes are so different.

Then Singaravelan & Veera, with different styles and moods with all songs amazing, amazing, amazing. These are all post Rahman entry and to say that nursery rhymes captured nation' imagination can say why IR was down during 1992 to 1996! The above four albums are now my all time joint no.1 favorites bringing down Chemmeen & Annakkilli to no. 2 spot! I'm currently feeling very ecstatic and paralyzed at the same time listening to Priyanka songs. In recent years, these are 4 albums with all songs super (and extremely difficult compositions) and that too from IR after brought down by Rahman.

  hmmm... can't agree, sure about RAsaiyaa (1995?) atleast. If you were to start from 1992, IR had some class albums - AavArampoo, Chembaruthi, Chinna KouNder, Devar Magan, Meera, NadOdi ThendRal, Chenthamizh PAttu, Vanna Vanna Pookkal, among others (I think he should have scored around 40-50 movies in 92 alone!). 1993 also had some blockbuster hits among the 40-odd films IR scored, none better than Balu Mahendra's 'Marupadiyum'. 1994 was a relatively quieter ordinary year, despite the blockbuster hit in 'Veera'; here again, I would place 'Adharmam', 'Vanaja Girija' and 'MahAnathi' several notches above 'Priyanka'. 'Unnai Ethir pArthen' (VG) is a landmark IR-SPB-SJ combo.
  
  In 1995, 'AvathAram', 'Moha Mull' and 'Sathi Leelavathi' stand leagues apart from RAsaiyya which IMO was very ordinary by even that year's standards. 1996, despite a low output had one of the best albums in IFM - Kaala pAni.
  
  Period 92-96, I would rate 'Marupadiyum', 'AvathAram' and 'Kaala pAni' as definitive scores that must find a place in IFM archives of all time. One can notice a subtle crescendo building through these scores that culminated in the grand finale that was 'Guru' in 1998.
  
  Downgrading 'Chemmeen' and 'Annakkili' in favour of these average (by IR standards) albums? I'm not sure how many would agree with your judgement on this one.
  
  And, before I forget, to make a sweeping statement about 'nursery rhymes' is either in poor taste or a case of extreme naivete. This was also Rahman's most productive period qualitatively, and for IR to produce the work he did in this time is a testimony of how he let his work speak for itself despite the several desertions from his 'camp', despite the paradigm shift in our film music trends. If I have a grouse, it is that he could have avoided working in atleast 50% of the movies during this period that offered him no scope for creative expression with results reflective of his boredom and detachment from the subjects.

  suresh, i am not completely disagreeing with your observations. At one point, i felt avatharam, marupadiyum, and others u have listed were greater masterpieces than my list above. over repeated listenings, u find certain qualities emanating in the 4 albums mentioned that are of a level not easily perceptible. IR is relaxed, is measured, consummate in building the tunes, having more difficult melodies, sublime moods and feelings and mostly extraordinarily adventurous, especially Chhaila, the hindi copy of raasaiyya - the tunes may seem ordinary but IR displays a kind of control not warranted for a production such as a Prabhu Deva film.
  
  Singaravelan songs seems ordinary but study the compositions and the mood, likewise for Priyanka. This one I perceive is extraordinary while an average listener might say the percussion or rhythm side is native. THE MOOD and the melody, the EASY FEEL OF THE SOUND despite complex the tunes or ideas seeming complex, the wholesome ness of the tunes - these 4 movies are stellar examples.
  
  by the way, Kaalapani songss is according to my ears one of the worst and least interesting albums by IR, obviously IR was asked to compose after it was offered to ARR. Guru was exemplary not doubt but too crowded in compositions. It was too thick that I felt IR went overboard to give more than needed. Perhaps, the only movie, where IR went overboard in the songs (too rich tunes and orchestration). Certainly mind boggling, but that is not my point.

  I have a CD (burnt) collection containing Guru - Sirai Chaalai - Hey Ram.
  coincidentally, in a single day, I've heard adjectives like worst, let down, least interesting about these albums. how stupid (and tasteless) I was to think that this was probably the best CD in my collection!
  
  NOM to archivist. tastes differ. but, am I too naive to expect atleast some uniformity and consensus in opinion about the "obviously good" ones or at the very least, not encounter entirely contradictory views about them?

  HOW CAN U PPL POINT OUT SOME SONGS OF IR AND SAY ITS NO 1...i don understand this logic...IR keeps on churning out good songs as time proceeds right from annakili to SMK......just like a music machine ....see for example paattu cholli has same quality as annakili songs...neither up nor down ....its success ,fans way of looking , market.. thats showing him up or down...but for him it keeps going...input story output good songs...input different story output different tunes...the show goes on...

  s0 ;--) Guru - too much - 3 of 5 songs at thesis levels - orchestration stupendous - IR could've composed 5 symphonies and that would've been more appropriate to sublimate the outburst seen in 5 min songs. Sirai Chaalai - too nonchalant, Hey Ram - too playful, that is how I see it.
