Comments from Deccan Chronicle on the music of Taal.
As far as the music of Taal is concerned, Subhash Ghai has tried to play safe. Since Bhangra music (or should we say Punjabi pop?) is the current craze, he has tried to incorporate a Punjabi flavour into the music with Ramta Jogi which has been sung by, who else, but Chaiya Chaiya Sukhwinder. Actually Sukhwinder is like the poor man’s Daler Mehndi.
Those who can’t afford the Sardar with the studded pagdi, just settle for the Dil Se guy instead. But by no means are we indicating that Ghai cannot afford Daler. It’s just that Sukhwinder is the latest craze in the industry, after Daler of course. But here’s an honest confession: except for the song we’ve mentioned above, the rest of the music is anything but extraordinary. In fact, it looks as if A R Rahman has run out of creativity. Hope we won’t have to say the same about Ghai’s film.
*Don't know what to say:-)

Hi Aruvi,
The piece you have posted is from The Indian Express , Sunday Magazine in the column by Simi Chandoke . This piece of info IMO really is trash and suggests that Hindi film journos cannot tolerate a South Indian joining hands with a big director like Subhash Ghai for Taal. Read any other film mag or Web Site , one can find rave reviews of Taal .

the opening lines resemble 'Ennuyir Thozhi, KELLoru Sethi..' from Karnan and 'ManathukuL Utkarnthu maNi addithai…' from Kayana Agathigal (the earlier a MSV-TKR melody and the latter is VS Narasimhans').
The first line of the pallavi definetly reminds me of 'Ooru Sanam..' from Mela thiranthathu kathavu (IR-MSV melody).
Now you can expect the ARR bashers to pick these lines to thier advantage.
Any way thanks for the nice review. Looks like you spent a lot of time for us.

Hi Shashi,
Read your wonderful review. I am absolutely mesmerized by this one from ARR. As you have rightly said, he has shown tremendous maturity in delivering his music these days. Dheeemi dheemi is my pick from this album. I felt that there was something wrong at the end of this song where I could notice a dyssnchrony in the thalam. I may be wrong. Please correct me.
This one is far better than Taal.

I found the piece of information from the cinema section on the DC. I suppose they took it from there. Anyhow... I haven't heard 'Taal' but I read some reviews that praised it a lot and was suprised to find this. So that's why I posted it here. I don't know about biases.... I just found it comical for how much it contradicted a lot of other reviews.

Hi Sriram
Thanks for your comments.
Regarding Dheemi Dheemi, I did not find any problems with the thaalam. Also, I agree that it is melodius and catchy; I can see how you may pick it as the best of the album.
Also 'Dheemi dheemi' shows some shades of the raga Behag. This as you know is an extremely sweet raag in Hindustani which must have attracted Carnatic musicians who now use it quite often in their latter part of the concert as 'lighter pieces'.
Geetha--have you listened to 1947/Earth yet? Maybe, you can clarify some of the raga usage in 1947.
Bye

Can I just ask one question even though it might not be in my position to ask so. If anyone finds this rude or offensive please excuse me.
Is it really necessary to go about changing songs like 'vande matharam' and 'jana gana mana'. I know that ARR says that it will reach the younger audience when there's a lot of beat and stuff, but then I believe that it only makes them dance. Where's the sense of patriotism in that? I don't understand. Has the original versions of patriotic songs become useless. Those songs had something that the new version of ARR's 'vandemathaaram' did not have. That was patience and soothing. Aren't patriotic songs meant for listening thoughtfully and thinking, not to dance around for. To stand up and hold your head up. I watched the '50th Independant celebrations' in Delhi and was disappointed to see that they would use a pop song at the time when Independence was won (midnight August 15), vande maatharam, and ARR was dancing to it with all the loud noise, and people were dancing below for it. What does that show? That's Indian culture? Why weren't they listening to something softer, preferably Indian music (karnatic, hindustani, or whatever else) (afterall, it was to celebrate INDIA's independance, was it not), and reflecting the loses and the gains. I am not saying its wrong to dance to that, and I do congratulate ARR for bringing back 'vande maatharam' but I don't see how this song should have been sung at that time. Just asking.
No one take this as an attack against ARR or something. It's not. It's just a personal thought because I feel that somehow the magic is lost when people use patriotism for marketing purposes.
Maybe what I have said is wrong, and like I said before, I apologize if it offended anyone. But I would also like to hear what you guys have to say about this. Thanks for reading this.

ARR is only giving it a new interpretation. Its not as if the older songs are being replaced by the newer versions

Aruvi,
You hit the nail on its head. I completely agree with you. Re-mixing/ re-tuning classics like vandemataram or such songs is something even I'm unable to digest.
This re-tuning/ digitising is just an extension of the "re-mixing" culture which seems to have gripped the entire film industry - especially Hindi films. I was soo pained to see a re-mixed version of Ragupathi-ragava raaja ram with funnily-clad girls dancing for it. It was awful.
Regarding ARR's vandemarataram, the key piece of the album, Maa Tujhe Salaam is a nice number. But its definitely not the dancing-type of song. The album Vandemaataram-II has Lata singing the original vande maataram in the classic-old-tune.

Music and Culture should reach anyone. Remixing helps reaching new audience the original missed.
ARR's "vandemarataram" reached people world wide (indians and non-indians).

Ajit:
What purpose did ARR's VM serve by reaching out to people worldwide ? I tend to agree with Aruvi and Chandy - with a twist of my own. People can sing and dance all they want - who'd want to prevent merriment, after all ? But why try to find an excuse for it in the form of patriotism ? VM was an immensely succesful commercial venture. IMHO, it leant on patriotism for propping it up and not the other way round.

Sinath,
The purpose is to promote Indian roots, identity and music to the world. Why are you stuck with "ARR"'s VM? It is plainly VM, that is what counts.
