Arunmozhi is indeed on of tamil cinema's underrated singers. He has sung many songs for IR. My personal favorite is "Enna Vara Vendum..." from the movie Nandavana Theru. What do you guys think about Arunmozhi?

He is a good singer. His voice is pleasant and so is his diction.
In case you didn't know, he is an excellent player of the bamboo flute and is the lead flautist in IR's orchestra. His flute renditions can be heard in most of IR's hits of the 80's and 90's.

Hmm...I like his voice in some songs...like "Naan Enbadhu Nee allavo..", "Varaadhu vandha naayagan".. But, he doesn't sing with punch..

His pronounciation is very good - I liked his MoghaMuLL Song very much and "Varaadhu vantha naayakan", "Enna varam veNdum", "Oththa rupaay thaaraen" etc.,
In a music program (coimbatore), He mentioned that he sang 'Pachchaik kiLikaL thoLodu' from Indian, later it was recorded in KJY's voice also, and they finally decided to use KJY Version !

NagaS, just curious, what did u mean by "they" in
"they finally decided to use KJY Version". Just wondering cos I just saw some thread where someone asked how the MD decides the singer.

"NenjE Gurunatharin SEvadi ninainthu"
Wow! What a great melody, with excellent lyrics, in a rarely used meLakartha raga, 'nAtaka Priya'!
There were 2 versions of the above song in mOhamuL.
The ArunMozhi version is better, 'cos M. G. Sreekumar just killed his version with his heavy MalayaLam accent!

Neels,
I don't think there is a MGS Version of Nenjee ... Only 'Sollaayo' had two versions - One by SJ (Very well sung !!!!!) and the other by MGS,
Kamalam Padha kamalam, Sollaayo (+1), Nenjee Gurunatharin and then, What is the fifth song in the album ?

NagaS,
There is indeed a MGS version of "NenjE gurunaatharin". I have it downloaded on my pc and listen to it quite often. But i guess the movie might have had only 1 version of both songs. The other song is "Sangeetha gnyaanamu" by KJY.

Hi,
I am sure that my question is not relevant to this discussion. But anyways, can anyone let me know where I can listen to Moghamul songs on the net? Sorry for the trouble

NagaS,
There is another good song by KJY in MogamuL - Sangeetha gnanamu bhakthi vina (Telugu) - is it Tyagaraja kriti, any idea?

About "NenjE gurunaadhanin" from Classical Ilaiyaraaja - 12 :
"Recently I happened to listen to one superb Natakapriya song tuned by Ilaiyaraaja! It came as a pleasant surprise in the movie moga mull. The song is "nenja gurunadhanin"! It is a lovely song! The situation is similar to the one in sindhu bhairavi, where distraught hero Shivakumar, begs for alcohol and sings the song "thanni thotti thedi".
In moga mull, the hero Rajam is a music student. He gets a chance to perform in the house occasion of a local big shot. He refuses that chance. Later, his guru (Nedumudi Venu) falls sick and needs lot of money for hospitalisation. So, the hero becomes a victim of circumstance and is forced to go to that big shot for monitary help. The villain makes the hero sing in his house when there is no occasion. All his friends form a crowd and sit before the hero. While he sings, the insensitive audience talks aloud, giggles, and humiliates the hero in all possible ways. The song is "nenjae guru nadhanin" in the ragam Natakapriya. Arun mozhi has sung this song. Fantastic job! I have heard a classic krithi "geetha vadhya" in this ragam. If I remember correct, the Ri,Ga,Ma had been handled like in Thodi (with gamakam) in that krithi. Ilaiyaraaja has used plain swaras in this song. But, even then it is very classical and the raga identity is quite clear. Oh, what a pathetic situation it is, to be in a financially needy state, and to unwillingly sell one's music skill to a shameless crowd that is absolutely deaf to music! That scene only reminded me of the nowadays very popular marriage reception katcheris! Amidst the total chaotic environment of maamis (talking about their jewelry), maamas (talking about their gas trouble) and kids (playing with water gun), the musician has to sing! Often the musicians eyes will be tightly shut up, feigning full engrossment in his music! If not for the eye closure, who will come to save the musician from seeing the terrible audience!"

Ram,
Here is the link: http://www.nexus.internet-engineer.co.uk/search.html --> browse M-N listing and look for Moga Mull
Venkatesh,
It is indeed a Thyagaraja krithi in Dhanyasi rAgam, Adi thALam.
Comments from Classical Ilaiyaraaja - 12 :
"Ilaiyaraaja used one of the Thyagaraja krithi in Dhanyasi in the movie moga mull. Again, the situation is similar to sindhu bhairavi, where Shivakumar goes to a katcheri and takes over the singing of the musician on the dais. Ilaiyaraaja used the Thyagaraja krithi "lochana" In the ragam Dharbar to indicate the kind of musical talent that Shivakumar has (despite loosing his sobriety). In moga mull, a drunken musician gets on the stage and sings with a lot of abhaswaram. The hero gets on the stage and then sings "sangeetha gnanamu bhakthi vina" in Dhanyasi. K.J.Jesudoss has sung that song in the movie. In that situation there is a strong lecture by the hero's guru that many present day musicians take alcohol etc!"

Arunmozhi is yet another intriguing IR find. Intriguing because you do not know why he was ever introduced. IR's other (in)famous male singers are MV and Mano. All these were supposed to counter SPB in IR's warped mind. GOd save us from these asingars.

well said, Gratitude :-) Atleast Arunmozhi got some very selective numbers and in spite of his not-so-pleasing voice tried to impart some bhaavam to his renditions. Malaysia Vasudevan was a disaster. He probably has sung the max. no of junk songs for IR followed by Mano. Actually the reverse is true. Knowing that Mano and MV were going to sing his tunes, IR probably composed them without an iota of inspiration. I sympathize with IR in this aspect.
Arunmozhi was, I believe, a track singer who could have been just a lazy substitute because IR didnt have time to scout around for better talent.
BTW, I dont think IR introduced these guys with an aim to thwart SPB. I think he knows better. Because many songs sung by these jokers were sung by SPB in Telugu :-( Its just that SPB was probably busy in Telugu(singing a lot of junk songs there) or had some throat operation or some other reason which made him sing less in TFM. Namma poraadha kaalam, no viable alternatives available at that time. Maybe Jayachandran and KJY could have been used a little bit more.
