I have lot of doubt's in vairamuthu's lyrics.
In one song, "nee poagum thearuvil aangalai vidamaattean....."
Appadi yendral kaathalanukku, kaathali mea-l santhegama? Kaathali mea- nambikkai illaya? Ithu kaathalai kochchai paduthuvathaagatha!?
Yaaraavathu vilakkungalean!

Rajan,
Look at it in this way.
He does not want any other man to have the pleasure of looking at his lady love. Extreme degree of possessiveness. Neet not be
santhegam.

How about Kan Padume Pirar Kan Padume Nee Veliye Varalama- Un kattalagana Meniyai Oorar Kannukku Tharalama....
But there is a difference in terms of presentation and the selection of words. Old is still gold.

Sorry for deviating, but why does PBS sing that song as kanBadumae pirar kanBadumae?
Anyway, I find that a poet is only as good as the amount to which he/she keeps you guessing. And I interpret the line the same way Gokul does.

Adhukke appadi kelvi ketkureenga innum idhukku enna explanation ketkkaporeenga :)))
Nee pogum theruvil aangalai vidamattaen
Sila pengalai vidamattaen
Sari adhu pogattum, your topic title is excellent, but is sarcastic to the subject :)) why don't we start discussing some of the Real Vaira Varigal of Vairamuthu.
Without Thambi Ramki's help I don't think I can make any real contribution when it comes to Lyrics. Ramki Please Help!!
I would like to share that I feel somthing special about Vairamuthu in some lines in some songs I cannot recollect them now. But I can give an idea someone more knowledgeable can come out with the actual songs that these lines were in.
He uses words like Maranathirkku Maranam Uyirin uyirae Azhagin Azhagae
and many more which I am unable to recollect at this point of time :))
One of the best song that I like for which I am hoping that Vairamuthu is the lyricist is:
Idhu oru pon maalai pozhudhu
Vaana magal, nanugiraal,
Veru udai, ??giraal
from Nizhalgal Music by IR.
Kannukku mai azhagu
Kavidhaikku poi azhagu

Bhaskar,
Tamil Literature says Kavithaikku Azhagu are Unarchi, Vadivam and Karpanai. But Vairamuthu says it is Poi that give beauty to poetry. Does this mean that Tamil poems must contain tons of lies to qualify for Quality? The greatness of Avvaiyar lies in her flare for the Tamil verses. But her Koon Azhagu seem to override everything else. Avvai should be remembered for her Tamil, not for her physical deformation.

Haven't seen Kadhal Desam so I'm unfamiliar with the context, but I thought the lines meant:
uNmaiyaaga nee ennai virumbavillai endru enakkuth theriyum
aanaalum nee un vaayaal orae oru poi sonnaal en uyir vaazhum
adhaavadhu nee ennai kaadhalikkiraai endra poi sonnaal
I think the word endraal stands for sonnaal and not the usual "if so".
BTW, didn't Vaali pen the lyrics for Kadhal Desam? I like some lines in thendralae and oh veNNilaa too.

Vairamuthu is living in the shadows of Kannadhasan. Many of the latter's lyrics have been recycled to reflect the late nineties. I have ample proof but before I could proceed can I have some die-hard Kannadhasan fans to comment ?

Nava, As to the title of Kaviarasu, I am told that it was Avvai Nadarajan, Perunkaviko Sethuraman and a few others had bestowed the title upon Vairamuthu at a Madurai function. Suratha gives a very controversial background to this in his book entitled "Vinakalum Surathavin Vidaikalum." Could someone come out with verifying the actual background to the bestowal of "Kaviyarasu" title please. Nava, in the case of Vairamuthu following Kannadasan's footsteps, I think no harm is there as Kannadasan himself has followed Sangap Paadalkal and acknowledged in writing. It is common for juniors to follow seniors in the cine field.

Bhaskar & Kanchana:
Yes, I am surprised that it was Vaali. (My CD cover does not give any credits :-( and I assumed it was VMuthu.) I was amazed by these lines in Oh Vennilaa:

When comes to Dir. Kathir, Vaali usually writes well. May be because of Kathir's interest in kavithais. We can sense that in his dialogues too. So Vaali has done good job from Idayam to Kadhal Desam, and Kathir never has gone to Vairamuthu.

This is in response to Arun's note above. There is nothing wrong in saying ``kavithaikku poi alazhagu''. Here we should not equate `poi' with `lie, untruth or falsehood'. No way. What the lyricist means is that poetry is given to a lot of exaggerations, overstatements, hyperbole and so on. Shakespeare wrote ``the poet, the lover and the lunatic are of imagination compact''. Here he clubbed these three categories of people in imagining things and looking at things in their own peculiar, fanciful way. So when you hear a poet, a lover or a mad man say something be prepared to take it with a pinch of salt, for they are not always given to straight talk! Thus kavithaikku poi azhagu.
Talking of Vairamuthu, what I like about him is agglomeration of details. He takes an idea and then builds examples after examples. This can be noticed in several songs, for instance in ``Oorvasi, oorvasi, take it easy...''. The situations in which one is counselled to take it easy are all pure delight and so very true of life in Tamil Nadu. How many times that when you sit down before the TV set to watch ``oliyum oliyum'' does the electricty supply goes off. Relax!
