If this news is true then it is a rumour started by ARR himself - another way of publicity. Other ways include allowing Udit Narayan etc to howl in his songs, release albums with names like Vande Mataram, allowing NFAK to sing......

Guru - From what little I know, I can shed some light on this. Recently a producer from Bollywood was murdered by some Indian "mafia". Following this there has been several other threats in the North and this has now come to the South. Besides ARR, another name mentioned was Rajni Kanth! Police, however, have dismissed this threats as mere rumours. More knowledgeable, please continue...
Aravind - I suppose it's alright to be a little biased, athukkunu ippadiya?! Anthe manushen (ARR) appedi yenna thaan senjittaaru - ungalukku ivvalavu koabam varuvatharkku? :-)

Every day some guy is killed : in RMIM. (rec.music.indian.misc). From Shah Rukh to Shakti Kapoor to Anil Kapoor and to Kamal, Rajni somebody or the other is being killed. As of today the only guy who was killed is Gulshan Kumar of T-Series and Nadeem (of Nadeem-Shravan) is being accused.

Aravind - Please be careful, as you are treading dangerous grounds, especially where religious sensitivities are concerned.
Condemning him for his religious beliefs, IMO, is hitting below the belt.
Then again, if he is a convert, I would think he would be strong in his convictions, especially since he discovered it and was not merely born into the religion like most of us. (Please e-mail me if you want to expand further on this.)
I find it hard to believe that what he says/does are publicity stunts, because he is an extremely shy person (one trait he shares with IR!) But then again, if I am wrong, you got to agree he has excellent PR, and that is the basis for any good business!
I reproduce an excerpt of what Kavita Krishnamoorthy (Hindi Singer) said about him in one interview, for your reading pleasure:
AR: Is it true that Udit Narayanji didn't attend the party that Kumar Shanu threw for both of you in honor of your filmfare award?
Kavita: Uditji didn't come. There's a reason for that because we didn't know about the party very much in advance, in fact only about 48 hours in advance, and Uditji had to go to Madras to sing
for Rahman. Rahman is a very big music director, one can't miss the chance to sing for him. His wife couldn't attend the party in behalf of him because Aditya (his son) had measles and there was no way that she could have left the child. So she couldn't attend the party on Udit's behalf either. It is just unfortunate that the press played it up. I don't think Udit meant to hurt Shanu, if he was in town he would have come.

We will continue our discussions on religion separately.
Kavitha's interview is no big deal. Anyone would say the same about ARR today. There is nothing special in her statement.

To Ravy,
Yes, I was a bit busy with work and had to go down to Melbourne. Didn't have access to a terminal with Web facilities during that time. Miss me?
Thanks for the enlightenment on this matter guys/gals. I too feel that all this hullabaloo are just publicity stunts to get some limelight.
As for the Bollywood 'drama', real-life is beginning to look film stroylines down there. Puts the view of somewho say that watching moves will sonner or later make you want to act like that in a new perspective.

Guru:
Missed your rather lenghty and detailed discussions. Also some of your IR criticisms.
Yesterday in one of the News digests that I get on a daily basis, the headlines said 'Actress Meena is dead'. But in the detail news it turned out to be a 50+ malayalam actress Meena.

Pl enlighten me on ARR's religious background. I thought he was a born muslim. I am surprised to hear this news. i think it is very interesting. I know that he is a hardcore tamil and indian despite his religious preferences.

This posting is just meant to clarify Indian's doubts. They are hard-core facts which are just reported by me. They are not a product of my imagination. They are not meant to degrade any religion.
Hi Indian
Original name of ARR is S.Dilip. His father, Mr.Sekhar, is a Palghat Brahmin and was associated to cine music in some way. Dilip spent most of his life at Madras. Was into music very early. Did a lot of ad jingles. Worked with many MDs. Played keyboard for IR in 'punnagai mannan' (1986) and for the Kunnakkudi Vaidyanathan - Zakhir Hussain album 'Colours'. The credits mention his name as Dilip. This was in early 90s, before Aug 1992.
He also did an album with Shubha titled 'Set me free' which was never heard off. Shubha still refers to ARR as Dilip. (I saw her doing it in an interview in Sep 1996).
He then changed his name as A.R.Rehman (or was he re-christined by Manirathnam, a novelty-lover?) and was introduced in Aug 1992 and was accepted instantly by TFM. The same album, 'Set me free' was re-released with ARR on the lable and the album was a success.
So SDilip became ARRehman (how did the initials change?!!). He has now married a Muslim.

Aravind - AR Rahman is actor Raguman's brother-in-law. They are married to two sisters.
Aravind, to be fair, you should now tell how Ilayaraaja was a born Christian and became a hardcore Hindu! :-)
- From: pg (@ igw2.merck.com)

TO NOV :
I think IR was not born a Christian. He was born a Hindu (some SC), converted to Christianity in his early days and later became a Hindu again.
About ARR : That is another thing that confuses me : How did his initials change ? Did his father also convert and change his name ? That is the only possibility.

NOV:
Why are you also pulling IR in discussions where ARR and his personal life is discussed?
To All:
I personally feel that these kind of discussions should be avoided in a tamil film music forum.
Religion is an issue that is jolting India now and I think it is better not to continue the discussion on the lines of religion, caste, community etc. to avoid conflicts.

ennAl mudintha kuttai kuzhappal.
ARR's (previously dhilIp's) competitor (school and college days) who
happens to be my room-mate now tells me that ARR became a moslem
after some josiyar told him to embrace islam to achieve
success in TFM-dom. Sounds too realistic to reject.

I do not know anything about ARR's mother.
NOV
I know that ARR and Raguman are co-brothers. And I do not know anything about IR's lineage. So I am unable to comment on that.

Has anybody seen a movie called paNNaipurathu paNdavargal ? I think the paNdavargal are IR, Gangai Amaran, Bhaskar, Pavalar Varadarajan (brothers) + Bhaarati Raja. (BR is not from paNNaipuram but from another village nearby where he was a Malaria Inspector !). He was a friend of Bhaskar and later became a friend of IR. Maybe thie movie is slightly autobiographical.

cp - You have echoed my sentiments. Please scroll up to see what I had said earlier. I don't think the problem here is ARR's religion. It's just the anger against him is being redirected in any possible manner. That is the reason why I raised the issue of IR's religious background (to serve as an irony.) Why is ARR's religious and other personal background raised here? It has no bearing WHATSOEVER with his talents (or if you must, the lack of!)
aruLarasan - Would you change your faith for success in life? I don't think your statement is fair.
Okay, shall we leave these issues to rest?

Hey..hey..hey...stop this bloody nonsense. I only asked if whether the title topic was true or false. Please get off arguing on religious lines. Every religion in the world today preaches good. It's the people who practice it which exaggerate things and give religion a bad name, whether it be a Christian, a Muslim or a Hindu. A clear example of what I am saying can be seen in the arguments above. With this said, I hope this discussion stops here.

Latest in today's papers:
A bouquet of flowers was sent to Sivakumar's house. Yenermo yeithonu neneichu bomb disposal units were summoned (reminiscent of Rajiv Gandhi?). Eventually it was found that the bouquet was for Sivakumar's son, Surya (One of the leads in Nerukku Ner)
What exactly is going on in Inida's cinema industry?

As regards ARR's conversion, the fact circulating around is that he was subject to a lot of black magic and an Islamic preist helped him overcome it.
However his personal info is just for curiousity purpose only. Each and every indian loves his tunes irrespective of what his religion is.
