Hello friends,
It's me again. And this time, I met IR alongwith another newtfmpage regular, CSG. Unlike the previous occasion, when there was no scope for a chat, today we sat and talked with IR for about...god knows, time stood still, guys. We have no clue.
There were so many things we wanted to ask him, but in his presence, both of us were tongu-tied. Finally CSG found his voice and complimented him on his latest album, Bharati.
He's so incredibly down-to-earth and accessible. And he doesn't spout profundities, but speaks just like you would expect any layman to. That's his greatness. I'm still on a tremendous high....

guys this is csg, as cram pointed out we were speechless when we saw him, his room (where he composes notes)when you enter it you become absolutely calm and forgets to ask him the questions what you have already planned to ask for, here is another inrofmation from the mastero that 'koodamanjil' from the movie kochu kochu sandoshangal is based on rag 'suddha saveri',i request all the tfm friends not to fight on this particular topic cos it is from the composer itself.

Full details? Ok, here we go. There's not much, actually.
I asked him about the album he's working on (Moods of Ilaiyaraja), but he refused to divulge anything (athu varumbothu paarunga. isaiyai paththi enna solla?) except to say that it would be an orchestra-based affair, something on the lines of the symphony and the BGM for Hey Ram.
Talking of Hey Ram, I said that I and thousands of his fans were deeply dejected that he did not win the national award, to which he replied: "Ennai antha vattaththukkulla sekkaatheenga. Ella varushamum yaarukkavathu tharanamnu mudiveduththachchu. yaarukkavathu tharattum. sirappa ethavathu senja athukku awardnu koduththa athula artham irukku.''
Then CSG wanted a few clarifications on certain ragas in his recent Malayalam songs.
When we met him, he was busy with the re-recording of Ilayavan, a film starring new faces and directed by some new guy (etho sinna pasanga pannraanga).
Hopefully, we should be able to attend the recording session tomorrow as well. Have quite a few questions to ask, let's see.

can you tell him his complete disinterest in marketing sometimes has negative effects? for instance, with "Bharathi" it would have been a very simple thing for HMV to print sleeve notes (and if reqd. price it at Rs.45 instead of 40), so that the classic lyrics would've reached so many people unfamiliar with Bharathi's songs.
pls. tell him that people (like me) are willing to volunteer time & effort (in marketing communications, packaging design etc.) to achieve a better promotion of his music..
in hope...

Cram & CSG,
I am glad you guys will have another chance to meet up with IR, that too for a recording session. Wow!
Don't let this opportunity go. Please!
At least at the end of your next meeting, tell him how eagerly his fans have been awaiting the Symphony's release (so much so that it's become a joke, much to the delight of IR-bashers in this forum).
I have the following suggestions:
Option 1:
If it can not be released for some reason commercially, just as he made Subbudu listen to the score, his official site can put the score up for the Netizens to savour. This is just one option. (If such an option exists, nothing like it. We will all ensure that it is well-preesented and reaches to the global audience, not just the Tamils. And Rajangahm.com can really achieve its goal.
Option 2:
He has composed the score. So I presume he owns the intellectual property right. Right? Can he not get another orchestra like say, the Hungarian Philharmonic to perform and release the same under a good, reliable label (or if nothing works out, may be his own label)?
A man of his standing should not find it difficult to get rid of whatever has come in the way of its release. What do you think?
In fact if you have difficulty posing such questions to him, why don't you compose a nice document with all our queries and requests, print it out and deliver to him?
All the best guys!

Hello everyone
Oh, what a day it has been. The greatest afternoon of my life so far. About 45 minutes with the genius himself, us asking questions and he patiently, but not indifferently, replying to them. The re-recording for Ilayavan was cancelled and as a result, he was free for the day and that's how the chat happened. We spoke about so many things, I can't remember where we began.
Next year is his 25th year in TFM, keeping Annakkili release as the base ("naan athukku munnaleye vanthaachchu, 25 varushaththukku mele aayaachchu"). To a suggestion that it may be commemorated through a function and/or docmuentary on his work, he flatly refused to allow anything of that sort. I pointed out that HMV had brought out a videotape on Lata Mangeshkar's life and times, and maybe we could do somthing on those lines, but he was steadfast in his refusal.
CSG asked him about his penchant for composing songs in Mohanam ragam, to which he smilingly said: "Andha nerathula athu thonichchu avvalavu thaan."
On releasing his BGM tracks the way they do in Hollywood, he said: "Copyright laws are strict there. But here, my albums HTNI and NBW have been used without my permission. Kettukittu seyyattum, aana inge antha isaiyai cheap pannaraanga."
I piped in with: "Unga paatta kooda niraiya per copy adikkaraanaga." Oh, a raw nerve was touched, not surprisingly!
"yaaru thaan en paatta copy adikkala. ellarumthaan adikkaraanga."

Hello friends,
I'm back.
I asked him about how it was working with Padmarajan, a Malayalam film-maker who I regard as one the best India has produced (IR worked with him in Moonnam Pakkam and Season). "Oh, he was a fine screenplay writer. He handled subjects that no one else dared to. His approach was totally different. He also had a fine sense of music."
Taking off from there, I asked whether certain Tamil film directors and their stories had inspired him more than others, mentioning Mahendran.
"Tamil cinema oru kurugiya vattam. Enna situation kuduthara poraanga? Manjolai kilithano maanthano appadinnu oru paattu. Oru barberoda magan velaiya paakaama pattu paadikittu thirinjukittirukkan. oru ponna paakkaraan. Intha situation-la enna irukku? "Paruvame puthiya paadal paadu-nnu oru paattu. rendu per kaalaila jogging poranga. idhula enna irukku"
I chipped in with: "athey maathiri Johny padathula en vaanile..."
"aama, what is it? just a piano song. ellame namakku antha nerathula varuvathuthaan.''
[idhu ellarukku thona maattenguthe RAAJA, appadinnu naan manasukkulle sollikitten].
i asked him if he decided on a particular raga for a song. "idhuthaan mettunnu mudiveduththa appauram athula enna irukku? valluvanum bharathiyum idhuthaan paadal-nu mudiveduththa ezhuthinaanga? appa thonichchu, padaichchanga."

Moving on, both of us said: "Naanga kaala kaalama unga paatta kettukittirukkom. Neenga yaar isaiyai ketpathundu?"
"Evvalavo per irukkaangappa. Madan Mohan, Roshan, C Ramchandra, Salil Chowdhury, SD Burman...namma oorla C R Subbaraman, SV Venkatraman" he was just reeling out names. "Ivanga paattellam kelunga. annikku pottatdhu, innikku fresh-aa irukkum.''
"Oru nalla paatta ketkumpozhuthu, rendu vidhamana unarvugal erpadanum. Indha paattoda jenma jenmamaana thodarpu irukkungara maathiri feeling varanum. illa, idhu pudhusa irukku, appadinnu thonanum. atha vittuttu `indha maathiri paatta naan kettathe illai' appadinnu eppadi sollalaam? nee evvalavu kettirukke? etho porandhadhulernthu ella isaiyaiyum ketta maathiri..."
"evvalavo medhaigal irukkaanga. mozart-nnu oruththan 200 varushathukku munnaaleye 200 varushathukkana isaiyai pottuttu poyitaan, atha naama innum kettukittirukkom, vaasichchu kittirukkom." (when he was talking about mozart, you should have seen his face light up).
