of course yes because only those kind of trained guys are ruling the tamil film industry, from the past t.m.sounderarajan,c.s.jayaraman and many others have taken proper carnatic music.in the eighties our great spb has taken proper carnatic music training,in the female group chitra, sujatha, swarnalatha have all taken good training in carnatic music.at present most of the tamil film music numbers are sung by hariharan, shankar mahadevan and unni krishnan, all these singers have come from soung carnatic backgournd

actually, carnatic training helps a great deal but i wouldn't say it is essential. if you are naturally endowed with a good voice, such training will help improve it and broaden its range. and for that reason alone, getting some classical training is worth the time and effort.

SPB has taken proper carnatic music training? I have read otherwise...during the days of Shankarabaranam...

I have heard that although SPB and SJ were naturals, once they were spotted they began training in classical music in earnest. The same with Kishore. Hindusthani or Carnatic training is a must - for voice and breath control as well as for being 'tuneful'. Asha and Lata apparently still do the 'palte-riyaz' every morning without fail. Asha, in one of her interviews, said that, if she missed one day, she had lost the benifits from the 10 preceding days of practice.

From a known resource i got this news that great singer KJY used to carry a walkman with him wherever he goes,in that he listens to carnatic songs which he sang so that he can improve his voice.

It is difficult to answer this question. KJY and SPB are singers non-pareil.
To find out who really is the bset, hear sings from Shankarabharanam and Sindhu Bhairavi.
Really difficult to distiguish.
