As we all know during olden days cine songs were created predominantly with tunes for lyrics style. Only during the later parts the style became the reverse. Lets try to find out how our MDs, over the period of time, have performed well (or) not well in tuning the pre-written lyrics. TFM can be categorized into GR-SVV-CSR era; KVM-VR(MSV) era; IR era; ARR era, based on the then popular and versatile MDs. Lets try to dish out how well MDs of these era (not necessarily only-these-MDs but also other MDs like V.Kumar, S-G who belong to one or other categories) have performed in tuning the pre-written lyrics. Lets try to analyse by picking examples and see whether the MD has done exceptionally-well/well/ok/bad/worse for that pre written lyrics. The intension is to just analyse HOW THIS MD HAS PERFORMED and NOT who has performed better, though we may go for comparisons but healthier ones.

Srikanth, MSV's composition style for pre-written lyrics....there are several facets to it apart from bringing out the meaning of the lyrics in a tune form. For instance,
since OSIG has mentioned 'mOtor Sundaram pillai', let us consider the PBS-PS duet. The pallavi has a very short santham written by Kannadasan for both PBS and PS.
PS : kAththiruntha kaNgaLE
kathai aLantha nenjamE
Asai ennum veLLamE
pongi perugum uLLamE
This pallavi is sung first time with variations/curves placed for the last words in every line thereby overriding the existing santham put in place by KD. Most composers would be happy with taking the existing santham along. The second time the pallavi is sung, the word 'uLLamE' acts almost as a conduit for PBS to start on his pallavi.

kathaigaL sollum peNNilA
nAnirunthum neeyillA
vAzhvil Ethu thEnila
If you notice, the santham is the same as that for PS's part and most composers would compose the same tune. In this case, the tune is changed for PBS as if intending to convey a response rather than a begenning. This goes on till PBS sings the same pallavi in the tune PS sang her's !!!
Another example for pallavi with different tunes for a KD song.
PS's portion :
poyilE piranthu poyilE vaLarntha pulavar perumAnE
ummai purinthu koNdAL uNmai therinthu koNdAL intha poovayar kulamAthE
This part itself has several sangathis and is sung atleast 3 times with variations and the last time, the word 'kulamAthE' is put through in such a way that the listener automatically expects a response from the male singer. The response is,
poovilE piranthu poovilE vaLarntha poovayar kulamAthE
unnai purinthu koNdAn uNmai therinthu koNdAn intha pulavar perumAnE
This is in a different tune, befitting a response though most composers would be tempted to use the same tune as that for PS's part. The same words are then repeated in the tune that went with PS's part!!!
There are far too many such songs by MSV, so many that it became a normal thing in MSV duets those days. There are several songs/duets with different tunes for the stanzas for the male and the female singer respectively.
Composing tunes for KD's lyrics can be daunting because he is as unpredictable as unpredictability itself :). You could have crazy santhams like 'kaN mayyEnthum vizhiyAga....' , 2 liner stanzas like the ones in 'kamban EmAnthAn' or extremely short santhams but pregnant with great ideas.

MSV -TKR & GR have done many Bharathiar songs.
MSV has done some Bharathidasan numbers too.Almost all the songs are hits.

We can narrate the skill of the MD as given by SL (quoted above), or take a song and analyse critically and come to conclusion.
(e-g) Lets take the song daevan thandha veenai adhil daevi seidha ghaana thaedum kaigaL thaedinaal adhil raagamindRi pogumo FROM NaanPaadumPaadal. The tune is set to the pre-written lyrics (KaNNadaasan's song was used in this film after his death). Does the tune fit itself to the lyrics? Did it make any compromise (by cut-shorting words or unduly stretching a word)? Are there any wonders in the song or is it simple one? So on and on

I suggest the following songs for analysis:
"Chithira cholaigale" by TMS MD-SG from "Naan En Piranthen" &
"Puthiyathor Ulagam seivom" from Kalangarai vilakkam - by PS -MD MSV
Prewritten lyrics of Bharathidasan.Since Bharathiyar songs would have been discussed already in detail.

Another good example of tune fitting to lyrics is the song "oruththi oruvanai ninaithuvittaal" from sarada(by KVM). The lines for the long pallavi end in the words "kaathal", "inbam", "thuyaram", "mounam" etc. the way the tune has been composed and the way the pallavi ends the tune clearly reflects the meaning behind each and every one of those lines..
This song is also set in a Q & A format with PBS replying to PS questions..when he answers "thuyaram" you could feel the tinge of pathos in the tune(and in his voice) and also the way he reduces the amplitude in his voice when he says "mounam"..No wonder this song is supposed to be one of the favourites of KJY

so MSV gave a pause in the song for the comma.

..and the appropriate progression in the tune at various points...avar kayyaiththAn, koNdu mellaththAn, vanthu kaNNaiththAn......the lyrics do not go further indicating reluctance on the part of the character , the word 'kaNNaiththAn' is sustained tastefully and falls through with 'eppadi solvEnadi'. The tune is not only apt for the lyrics, but would be great to listen to too.
There was this programme in Singapore to felicitate TKR and MSV where Vairamuthu was going into raptures explaining how MSV had woven a tune out of his 'kaNNAna poomaganE' in 'thaNNeer thaNNeer'. There is a comma placed in the II stanza thus...kaNNeer, eNNayillayadA. He stated that the pause in the tune after the word 'kaNNeer' is conspicuous and without which the meaning conveyed would have been altogether different.

"kannaana poomaganey"..Thats a masterpiece anyways.. !!! wd be glad if someone posts the lyrics.
