I heard Panchathantiram's songs. I am not exactly a Deva fan, but I must say that he has done a good job. One of the songs' chorus ("Meri jaan meri jaan") is shamelessly lifted from Boney M's "Hurray, Hurray, It's a holi holiday". This song apart, the others seem ok. Here is a complete list of the songs:
1. Meri Jaan Meri Jaan (Vai Raja Vai Raja)- Sung by Srinivas & Shalini.
It's a fast song with typical lyrics. Deva tries to use the kind of synthetic voice effect used by ARR in Parthale Paravasam's tittle song (the part that goes "Ingge kaathalum coffe - yum ondre, rendum suda suda kudithal nandre, mella suvaithide varuvaaya") In fact, listening to this song reminds me of that song only, at many points. I give it *6/10*
2. Naan Pena Nee Paper - Sung by Devan, Mathangi & Timmy
The opening of the song sounds as if it's been directly ripped off from a Linkin Park album Heavy (knowing Deva, he probabbly did rip it off)Heavy electric guitar compositions that really made me wanna jump up and do a headbang kind of action :-) This song really rocked! It was a fun song to listen to and I kind of like it. The lyrics has inclusions of many English words (seems to be the IN thing nowadays, sigh) I give it *6/10*
3. Ennodu Kaathal - Sung by Mano & Harini.
The first hearing itself had me sighing helplessly, as the song has too many similiraties with "Pineapple Vannathodu" from the Sarath Kumar movie "Samudram". 60's type of rock song, with the Pink Panther theme song kind of music, only the original (which was ironically composed by Deva's own brother Sabesh) was much nicer and pleasant to the ears! Harini and Mano did justice to the song but that alone couldn't save it. Imagine, Deva ripping off his own brother! I give it *3/10*
4. Kaathal Piriyaamal - Sung by Kamal
This is probabbly the best song in the whole album, and probabbly one of the best song Kamal have ever song. I fell in love with it instantly on the first hearing itself, Deva have managed to utilize Kamal's vocal talent to the max. If anyone ever doubted that Kamal can sing, then this is the song to prove them all wrong. I am full of admiration for the guy, the song itself is very soulful and beautiful with Scottish Bagpipe interludes in the background and heavy symphonic kind of musical arrangement. A simply superb song with excellent lyrics and fantastic rendering by the actor extraordinaire, I give it *8/10*
5. Vanthean Vantnean - Sung by Kamal & Nithyashree (and Sujatha I think)
It's an OK song, but as always when I hear this song I am reminded again why I hate to listen to Deva's songs. The song sounds like some other old song I've heard before and it drives me crazy to pinpoint which one. At certain points the song sounds very classical with low and high pitch vocal plays. Kamal does a good job again singing but it's kind of irritating as the song switches from slow to fast beat every now and then. A very inconsistent song, takes repeated listening to actually like it. Ilayaraja could have done a song like this much much better. I give this song a *3/10*
Overall I would give the whole album a *5/10*.
It's definetely worth listening too, and not to be dismissed of as terrible! Give it a try, you might really like one or two of the songs!

Good review.
On Sabesh Murali -I think the producers choosing SAR,Sirpy can give these two a definite try.Musical sense irukkirathu.Samudram was a decent effort.

"Meri Jaan Meri Jaan Sunday" is actually a very old Hindi song from the movie "Shenai" that has been just been reused/lifted by Deva..I dont think it bears that much of a resemblance to the BoneryM song..

Maran,
meri jaan meri jaan does have a slight resemblence to "holi holiday". But isnt it just a spoof of "meri jaan meri jaan murgi ke ande" hindi advertisement that came about a decade ago. it was a govt sponsored egg advertisement.
naan pena nee paper and kamal solo are ok rest trash..

Hi Bharath, "meri jaan, meri jaan murgi ke ande"? I have not heard that one before...I guess when you say that it was a govt. sponsored egg advertisement, you mean the Indian govt :-) I am from Malaysia.
Maybe you are right, because I have not heard that ad before, my mind automaticaly slided towards the "other" similar song from Boney M. Most of my Malaysian friends think the same too.
I have not heard the song from "Shenai" too as Vijay puts it when I wrote that review (I have now though, thanks Vijay) and the resemblance is well...let's just say unbelieavable (just stating the facts:-). Imagine using the same lyrics as well!
Whatever it is, one thing for sure is that the song has been lifted from "somewhere" and that's the thing that makes it "not so good" if that's putting it mildly (trying to stay away from MD bashing :-)

vijay,
you are correct in that reference to the the hindi song.
but the song became more popular because it was used in the advt for "Eggs". yes the Indian Govt sponsored Advts for Eggs and Milk in the late 80's and early 90's.
In the Advt a fat guy with a hat (the oone made of woodish material and not cloth) drives in a cycle and sings
"meri jaan meri jaan murgi ke ande". I think this osng is a spoof of that advt and the words "meri jaan" are being used deliberately. I know deva copies a lot.. But we will know when we see the movie that this is deliberate... spoof of the advt.

Other than Meri Jaan which although is aond hindi tune seems to be peppy enuf, the rest of the songs atr strictly dull and monotonous. Nothing extraordinary or good. But then Kamal- Deva combo has never been anything other than passable. I was not happy with Avvai Shanmugi or PKS or this. Kamal will be better off with Vidyasagar(a very underrated performer) or Bharadwaj(good experimental skills) or ARR(Thenali was better atleast..though it wasnt fabulous or anything) or the Raajas (KR was good with Kadhala Kadhala- Yuvan seems to be picking up well) and IR with Hey Ram being one of the best experiments with mainstream cinema in the last decade.
