The classic example is andhi mazhai in rAja pArvai. Many baratha nAtyam/carnatic music based movies used mainly mridangam (eg. salangai oLi). Some had mridangam+tabla playing together or taking turns (eg. alaigaL Oyvathillai).

...there was a similar thread earlier listing all the mridh songs of Raja...In any case, I personally rate `indRaikku Enintha AnandhamE' as one of the greatest mridh songs of IR (JC/VJ)

"pon vAnam panneer thoovudhu innEram" has mridangam-tabla played concurrently.I felt it was quite different.

andhi mazhai is special because as far as I know it is the only song with drums+mridhangam (in the pallavi).
gangaikkarai mannanadi has both mridhangam&tabla.
Ofcourse, that valli song has a long mridhangam predlude (Avarthanam ?) after that there is no percussion at all in the song !!
I'll checkout the other songs !!
(Thanks aruLaracan :-))

Nice that you mentioned about 'iLanjOlai pUththathA'. But I think tabela starts first and give way for miruthangam.
Similarly in 'pon vaanam panneer thoovuthu', miruthangam and tabela alternate in the saranam.

-poo malarndhida valamidu pon mayilae
-tharisanam kidaikkaatha
are three songs that come to mind immediately. I'm sure there are more from the brief period when T.V. Gopalakrishnan and IR collaborated which is when IR focused a lot on mirudhangam. Left to his favorite our man opts for the tabla.

IMHO, one of IRs all time great compositions is Ponvaanam Panneer Thooovudhu Inneram. The alternating Mridangam and tabla in the Anupallavi and Charanam are amazing. Truly the work of a genius !!! Added to that the intoxicating slides in the bass guitar add that extra oomph along with Janaki's voice, not to mention the sensuous wind sound. It's songs like those that make us deify IR. Who said you cannot use the Mridangam to depict sensuous love ?

And of course .... IR's mastery is in the use of the Chapu talam, Misra Chapu in this case.

We all know that mridhangam is very south Indian. It is also interesting that a similar musical instrument was found in Harappa. We also have archaelogical evidence of mridhangam in south India.

My favourite is "Om Namashivaya" from Salangai Oli.When Janaki starts the song in high pitch by singing "Om...Om...", it really transforms us to a devotional mood. The accompanying mridangam piece before the Pallavi is simply superb.

Ravi,
Maybe you should start a thread on percussion arrangements in IR songs. I dont want to start the thread and not be able to contribute. I was listening to one in the car, 'oru pen purA , kanneeril thaLLAda, en uLLam thindAda enna vazhkkaiyo'. This song has drums in the pallavi and drums+tabla in the charanams. Had I not turned up the bass to the max I would have not heard the kick drums. I am not sure why IR always recorded percussions at a very low level. Maybe he thought these things will spoil the melody. But now onwards I am going to turn up the bass as much as possible. There is so much to discover down the freq scale :)

You guys have listed some of the most fascinating songs which use mridhangam.
Another song that I can think of right now is
"Vandhadhe oh kungumam" from kizhakku vaasal where the mridhangam plays in a racy pace like "kasturi maane " song
