Dear friends, We are all aware of the very honourable accolade for IR "MAESTRO". Has anyone other than IR has aquired this honour in India? What are the qualities one should possess to become a Maestro? Kindly discuss on this topic please....

Yaaro:
I have no qualms in calling IR maestro...or any thing...If his fans wishes...then they can call him by any name...Okay....off the record I want to say that..he deserves that..
Okay..coming to the point...if he insisted prod. and dir. to put Raagadevan, isaignyaani and other stuffs in films after films...then I feel that he is no saint...well that is what the last para of the last post says.
Maestro title came with the symphony...so as long as symphony is hiding the title can also hide....now this is if you see the title and its origin together....or else....the title in independently suits him.
Well, let me put one thing on record...I hate the title Isai Puyal for ARR. I am happy that most of the time ARR's does not accompany any titles when displayed during credits in films...

Maestro is not an awards i guess..
it's just like Isaignani, thenisai thendral, ISai Puyal, and so on..
it is not like padhma Shri, or so...

If ARR can be called as Madras Mozart, why debate Maestro for IR

Thanks for bringing attention to that article,
some very significant opinions are expressed in that article......

An insightful differentiation of POP music and the arty classical music, i think. Also another reason why IR should have moved out of the cinematic medium long long ago. IMO!
But the following statement maybe attempts to explain why he did not,

Sad though....

Perspectiver,
Thanks for bringing attention to that article,
some very significant opinions are expressed in that article......
"How can one reconcile the impressive titles and the sudden come down in Ilayaraaja's popularity? One line of reasoning is simply that music lovers in Tamil Nadu are given to lavishing high praise and titles without truly understanding his genius. While the composer kept maturing, the majority of his listeners fell behind, simply because they could not keep up with him."
While there is no doubt about the fanatical hero worshipping nature of the tamilians, the last point in the about excerpt is an impressive thought.
"The commercial medium of cinema satisfies a taste that by its very nature is change-seeking and therefore changeable. Moreover, popular taste has a threshold of tolerance for aesthetics. If the art form is too demanding, popular taste begins to reject it. Every facet of Ilayaraaja's music has been improving so much that it has transcended the threshold of popular taste. In fact, some of his music composed after 1991 is clearly beyond the comprehension of film audiences who represent popular taste."
An insightful differentiation of POP music and the arty classical music, i think. Also another reason why IR should have moved out of the cinematic medium long long ago. IMO!
But the following statement maybe attempts to explain why he did not,
"What is there to guarantee that if he now decides to make a clean break, he might not sink further into oblivion?"
Sad though....
