karthik,
even the 'kaadhal meedhu' song from kadhal kavithai has the same piece near the end repeating in both the interludes if u notice carefully. i cannot agree more with u'r statement about hariharan. for some reason or the other i don't like his voice at all. his voice takes away the sting from IR's compositions. perhaps SPB would have made the diana diana song sound better.
or it could also be that IR is making his compositions more ARRish in order to suit hariharan's style!! even in 'ennai thalaato varuvalo' i was not as impressed with the interludes/BGM as i was with the tune.
IR has simply lost his penetration power, IMO!!
added to unnikrishnan, i think M.G.Srikumar has a lot of potent. he can easily be a 'waaris' to KJY.
i could'nt distinguish his voice with KJY in yaathramozhi and guru. amazing! his voice is so soft and smooth like a knife slicing through butter! iam puzzled as to why IR does not give him chances to sing in tamil.
Reg. unnikrishnaan, for a carnatic musician of his stature, iam disappointed at the range of songs he is singing for deva and the like.
money (&fame) rules!
people say that irrespective of a carnatic musician's reputation it is only the KJY's and the unnikrishnans that attract the max. crowd in concert halls during the december season!!

buddy,
the opinions expressed by me atleast, is based on my own listening experience. i have never given a damn to any opinions/ratings/reviews in my life.
even when people said that IR's songs never make it to top 10 these days, i have never stopped listening to his music. and TFMDFers have already been warned enough in another thread about tamilcinema.com. so don't worry about it.

See, this is what I've been telling for all these days. But people just wouldn't take it. IR should definitely limit his singing and his daughter should only in the chorus. Aslo, when i listened to KK, I was not all that impressed. Again, it is nowhere in the domain of Agni Nakchthiram or geethanjali or any of his older movies. Hate to ask, but, IS RAJA LOSING STUFF?

Regarding Tamilcinema.com site , u can judge their quality by reading the news clips they have as " cinema seithigal"..

Kartik,
"Rajas lyrics were unanglicized meaningless gibberish, and people mostly perceived them as cheap. In the perception of the public, words like friendship, chikku bukku rayile etc. were classy when compared to the mamas and machans."
I agree IR's songs use more rural slang words.. But can't accept them as meaningless gibberish..maybe a few.. i have been listening to most of IR's recent songs w.r.t lyrics.most of them are pretty decent !! ( especially compared with latest non-IR songs )
But u are right abt people perceiving them as cheap! more so back home where talking in tamil is considered below diginity ... especially for city slicks!! But the audio cassette market is obviously in the cities.. so no wonder IR's lyrics sound cheap and fare bad in sales compared to other thaminglish albums.!!
Take for instance the "Vayasu pulla " song from Annan. (such nice a tune !! but has typical folk type lyric .. ) . But Go ask anyone in the teens or 30's in TN to sing it .. he would rather sing "Urmila formula " song and sound hi-fi.. That's the trend.. Hmmmm..

MG Sreekumar is a good singer no doubt, but his accent KILLS!!!!
Listen to the song NENJE GURUNADHARIN from Mohamul. There are two versions of this song: one by Arun Mozhi and another by MGS. Who has given a perfect rendering??? Well, listen to the songs & judge for yourself!

Dear Srikanths,Sangeethas,& other highly creative, modern, and gifted ARR Fans,
I have been a silent spectator to so many discussions that have prevailed in this forum. There were many IR/ARR bashing taking place in all topics. But the IR bashing that took place in Kadhal Kavithai somewhat affected me and forced me to give my views regarding that.
I had a strange but rather true thought of
What would be the views of the aboved mentioned respected ladies and
gentlemen(srikanths, sangeethas etc.) if KK had music scored by ARR and that it had the same music and songs.
I will explain their views for each song.
Film : Kadhal Kavithai
Music : A.R.Rehman
Produced by : Metro films
Directed by : Agathian
Lyrics : Agathian
Recorded in Prasad & Panchatan Inn.
Rating : ***** (Maximum *****)
1. Thath Thom (Ila Arun & Swarnalatha )
On the first hearing itself, it grew up on my mind and heart like Uravasi song and Sonia song. The selection of Ila Arun by ARR adds new dimension for this song. The Chorus part fits in nicely and the rhythm keeps our feet tapping and it continues throughout the night even when i am deep in sleep. I have no doubt that its gonna to be a sure hit.
2. Kadhal Meethu (Hariharan)
What first attracted me was the starting piece which slowly began by haunting our minds and reached a pinnacle when the song pallavi was played in a keyboard(a great piece by ARR). The interludes had great depth in it which explained to me in detail what would be the storyline and what is the situation based on which the song was picturised. The meaningful lyrics and music has blended beautifully with this song. We all hope and pray that Agathian would do justice to the huge amount of hard work taken for this wonderful song by ARR.
3. Alana nal muthala (N.Kuppuswamy & Sowmya)
ARR has once again proved he is second to none (including DEVA) wrt gana as well as folk songs. To the great surprise of everyone, he has introduced two very talented singers in Kuppuswamy and Sowmya. No other singer would have done justice to the above song than the above two.
With this, ARR's sweeping success of introducing new singers continues. (Its high time Raja learn from Rehman the new kick that he creates in everyone's hearts by way of introducing new singers qualities). By this song ARR has proved that he gives not only importance to youth but also experience (kuppuswamy.). We are all sure that this song is going to be great hit among the lower level masses and who knows may become a hit among the higher level also.
4. Eh Konji Pesu ( ARR & Sujatha )
Sujatha's popularity will go sky high once again among the masses (after the Athisiyam song). What attracts everyone is the chorus part sung by none other than ARR. ARR and Sujatha has won everyone hearts in this song. We think that the song might be for a situation where a heroine gets hurt of some action by Hero and he tries to pacify her. ARR has proved time and again how nicely he can compose even for complex situations.
5. Alai meethu - Bhavatharani
Atlast ARR has caught hold of this talented singer (after a miss in Iruvar) and to do this he could have chosen no better time than now.
The Raga that is used in this song is too complex to understand. May be he might have used a combination of two or more ragas, thus creating a new raga. Anyway friend Don't worry. We have personally written a letter to Semmangudi and M.S.Subbalakshmi, Jesudoss and well known Carnatic critics to help us know what type of Raga has been used in this song and that we are curious to know whether it had been used by Thiayagaraja Swamigal during his days.
We will let u know this sooner or later. We know that u are curious to know the results any way do wait with patience. U will get the desired results. We are sure that ARR would get a national award for this song and Bhava for best singer (Courtesy ARR.
6. Manasa Thotta Kadhal (Hariharan)
This song clearly explains the greatness of true love and how true love could change once lives. ARR and Hariharan has given heart and soul for this song. The saranam part is too good and is haunting from the first time u hear. This song explains how sincere advice is a part and parcel of true friendship. Agathian lyrics is just too good for this song.
7. Diana Diana (Hariharan)
In one sentence if u want us to say
" Song of the decade"
At the first hearing itself u would feel as if the great Princess who has given her life for the poor and the downtrodden is still evergreen in our memories and will be forever.
What is haunting is the Chorus part (Diana Diana) being beautifully composed by ARR.It makes us feel as if to stand erect (Attention part) and make a humble salute to the great lady. We are eager to know how much impact(Glorifying Diana) ARR creates with this song among the masses(not only in India, but as well as in UK, Somalia, and other poor African countries).
"Long Live ARR
Long Live TFM"
Thanking u
with rgds.
The review (100 % truth) of KK would be like the above had it been scored by ARR.
I need to tell a lot in the continuation of the above topic to our gifted ARR fans.
I will continue later.

Vijay, Karthik, MSK et al..
Make no mistake, the only reason for this apparent dip in IR's music is the paucity of directors who can get the best out of him. I still maintain that IR is a director's genius & that if he gets an interesting script, he'll make music like no one else. I can't think of a director in recent times that has the calibre to do full justice to his talent. Unfortunately, the B.raaja's and M.ratnams of the TF are on a cold war with IR, albeit temporarily. Look at Guru, Avatharam, Raman Abdullah etc. Raaja's given his best where the film has interested him. I see no major problem with the synthetic stuff he's churning out these days, he's just being reactive to the trends & demands of film music these days. If he can give such wonderful songs for a never-to-see-light movie like Annan, if he can create a gem like "Naan Vakkappattu" in this environment, there's nothing to fear about his capacity to deliver. I'm very miffed especially about the Naan Vakkappattu song just going unnoticed by the mainstream, maybe Cheran couldn't do justice to it. Right now, I was listening to "unnai vida matten" and "munnam seitha varam" from Vanaja Girija (?); having seen the movie, I'd have shot Keyar wilfully if he'd come before me. No other MD but IR can inspire himself to work with such stupid directors who don't have a modicum of music knowledge? I request anybody who's got doubts about IR's sincerity to listen to the above songs, watch the movie & then decide who's to blame.
I also agree fully well about some inane lyrics spoiling his tunes. An example that immediately springs to my mind is the song "Intha Poovukooru Arasan" from Karthik starrer "poovarasan". IMO it's a real beautiful song with excellent music & singing (SPB, Chitra), yet the first few lines spoil whatever impact there can be.
To those perennial disbeleivers, I can sign off this 1998 by declaring personally that within the next few years, I'll do a film with IR & show the world what he's capable of. This is not to prove his worth against any MD, as I believe IR is in a diff. league of his own at anytime!

suresh,
are u serious? :)) good luck! pl. let us all know about it, if u embark on such a venture. i agree with most of what u say. i too believe that IR should take up more village themes like annan or desiya geetham in order to give his trademark songs.
i was listening to the mallu album 'kaliyoonjal' yesterday and the tunes are simple yet impressive. that's wahy i get upset when i hear fancy albums like KK, with empty songs.
sathish,
ayya, srikanthai vittudungayya. why u people are so eager to pull a fight with him, i don't understand. as far as i know, he has not posted anything about kaadhal kavithai atleast in this thread. then why drag him unnecessarily here? i was the one who posted the review on KK here. and as i have told what i have posted are a collection of my opinions based on my listening experience that's all.
inspite of being a HCIRF, iam a critic of raja's music and for that matter anyone else. i don't think my opinions would have changes if the music would have been scored by ARR. yeah, definitely my expectations would have been much lower if it was ARR, but that would'nt have stopped me from criticising some aspects of the album.
