Call it plagiarism or plain inspiration, Indian commercial cinema has been importing Hollywood,European,Latin American or Japanese classics for all these years.Recently I read a newspaper article claiming some best inspirations of Tamil movies from the Hollywood stuff.I have added some more on my own findings.Pardon me if there is any discrepancy.
Some of the movies are:
1)Mahanadi-has a plot very similar to the English film "Hardcore" by William.C.Scott.
2)Anbe Sivam-inspired from"Planes,Trains and Automobiles".
3)Avai Shanmughi-inspired from "Mrs.Doubtfire".
4)Tenali-inspired from"What Bob can do".
5)Ayudha Ezuthu is also said to be an inspiration(dont know the movie).
6)Nayakkan-inspired from "Godfather".
I dont know why talented artists like Kamal get inspired so much from these Hollywood stuff.Almost each Kamal film has got an inspiration (atleast some of the scenes) like the climax fight of "Vetri Vizha" totally lifted from "The Commando".
7)Boys-said to be an inspiration from"Hot Bubblegum".(some say its from "American Pie").
8)Kadhal Kottai and E20U18-inspiration from"Shop around the Corner".
9)Jayam-inspired from "Serendipity".
10)Shock and Bhoot has shades of "The Exorcist".
11)Vaa Arugil Vaa-inspiration from "Child's Play".
12)Maya Bazaar(and to some extent "Naina") are inspired from "Ghost".
13)"New" inspired from"Big".
14)Ammavasai Iravil-inspired from "The Friday Freak".
15)"Jenma Natchathiram"-inspired from "Omen".
16)"Asuran" inspired from "Predator".
O.K. friends this is only a small list. The list is sure to bulge. What is the reason for this? Is it due to lack of creativity. At one end the MD's are busy copying sound tracks and on the other end these inspirations are going on silently. You can list ur own list of inspirations.Plz discuss. Thanks bye.

No Raghu:
Thhe confusion comes when we misunderstand adaptation, inspiration and imporvisation with copying.
All the above said three are not a crime...no human art in this world is original if you purely look at it...Even the great IR is not original...not even beethovan or mozart (if you strictly observe what original is..Okay...don't fight..ARR is also not original..in this context).....inspirations are the seeds which give rise to new creations...You need bricks to build castle...the castle might be new and innovative..one of the thing in the world...but the bricks are not...
Kamal is agreat improvisor...and he puts in great percentage of his ideas into a borrowed one...
Mrs. Doubtfire cannot be straightly brought out to Indian film...but Kamal made great change and adaptation to the story and made a wonderful film..I am a Rajini fan...but from my collage days I started understanding Kamal as well.
NOM...Ambleen...don't bounce on me...okayyaa

ZZ,
Yes I understand your point, but what is so wonderful about 'AvaiShanmugi'??, Kamal is pathetic in comedy roles, compared to Rajini. Kamal heavily relies on screenplay & script to be funny, thanks to his best pal crazy Mohan, but Rajini has Natural flare for comedy, other actors in this category includes, Karthick & Sathiyaraj.
Any way, let's not deviate to Rajini / Kamal topic :)

Rajni better than Kamal in comedy!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kamal is pathetic in comedy roles!!!!!!!!!!!!
Raghu, you must be kidding,TAKE A BREAK BOSS.
Can you imagine Rajini,Karthik&Sathyaraj in the guise of a woman, they would have made a caricature out of it.

any way, you being akamal fanatic, you would turn a blind eye towards other artists, how about comparing Shiavji sir with Kamal, u r seriously not going to say that Kamal is a better actor than Shivaji :)

Rajni's comedy - a stammerer everytime to proclaim his innocence.
Kamal - more versatile, doesn't have to stammer like rajni or show weird faces to bring laughter.
They both are definetly enjoyable to watch, since somebody compared them here's my 2 cents.
Even karthik has to depend on a particular accent to do comedy.
Everyones good in their own style, but if somebody needs to deserve praise for variety that goes to Kamal.

I wouldn't agree to the fact "2)Anbe Sivam-inspired from"Planes,Trains and Automobiles".
The only similarity between both movies are that heros misses their flight. That's it. Rest of the stroy line in Anbe Sivam is not at all same as PT&A.

I just went by what the article said. You are right as most science fiction movies can be traced back to Asimov.

//AAYITHA EZHUTHU WAS INSPIRED FROM AMORRES PERROS AND ROSHAMON.//
Rashomon...i don't think so,it's more like Amores perros..Rashomon had a different narrative which our Kamal looted already for his Virumandi..but at least Mani talked about 'Amores perros' and Kurosawa,in some interviews..Kamal maintained it as though he made them all(as usual..)

Tamizhan,
By your argument, every Indian film that has a song-based climax, every film that has a Flashback or a twist-in-the-tale ending has been "looted" from a Hollywood film!!
The technique of telling a story from different viewpoints cannot be termed as a copy of Roshomon! Virumandi was by no means looted from these sources. Let's give credit when it's due. I am not defending Kamal in general. Many of his films have heavily borrowed from Hollywood, (not all were written by him, so you can't blame him really).
Have you seen Nagesh Kukunoor's Hindi film, 3 Deewarien (IMO, his best movie so far)? It had used a similar storytelling technique and had an excellent screenplay!

3 deewarein:
I saw it and wow...excellent movie...Far better screen play that Virumandi...as it did not confuse....Nasrudin was fantastic till the end.
