TFM has been a cradle for many forms of music, including WCM.WCM,for all its seemingly difficult and complex forms, would have found a lot of admirers among TFM fans, what with people like IR and ARR around. For a start,I suggest the movie Nenjathai killathae in which 3 songs had strong WC influence.Another song could be Kaadhal Oviyam from Alaigal Oyvadhillai.More recently,a duet from Valli and ARR's Putham Pudhu Bhoomi vendum(Thirudaa thirudaa) were set to WC notation and modified to please the Indian ear. Any comments ??????

Hi Sankaran,
A good discussion has been going on in the thread "Tamil Film Music Cateogories" regarding the same topic. You input to that topic will be very welcome

IR always has WCM influence in his songs and BGM.
In his interludes he mixes lots WCM. But the mix is not like cut and paste (eg Thanga magan song from Batcha) stuff. By the time we Identify the piece he would have jumped for ahead. I always amazed the way he scores the interludes.
If we observe his compositions of interludes , his arrangements of instruments follow WCM's "movement " style. But contents will be purely from eastern style (rahter (south)Indian ).
Sometimes he introduces WCM in the prelude like
Poonkathavae thal thiravai,
Engangao sellum en ennangal (PP Bhiravan) -
Ananda ragam kaetkum kallam - (P Pushpangal)
excellent compositions
Sometimes in the interludes like
Akkarai chemai alaginilae - priya
Kattril enthan geetham - Johnny
Chandhirarum sooriyarum - Avatharam
There are lots of such songs.
In ARR's composition except Thiruda thiruda and
some pieces in Duet I could not identify much. But
in both those songs he did a good job.

The East Meets West concert in rAjapArvai - Kamal playing for the blind school - has the pantuvarAli piece at the beginning and moves smoothly to Western Classical. Could this be an example? And this touches upon another thread elsewhere in TFM about Jazz compositions. Any relevance?

I think the film "Ullasa Paravaigal" too had a good dose of WCM to add to the location of the movie. which was mostly shot in europe.

One of the best examples of the use of WCM in TFM is IR's work in Nenjathai Killadhe . Most of the songs had a good measure of WCMism in the orchestration. A particular example is the song Paruvame... in which the interludes have a distinct (Bach-like ?) WCM touch.
I have noticed that IR uses a lot of WCM-based orchestration to heighten the effects of scenic locales. Examples are : Ullasa Paravaigal (as K. R. Ravi has rightly pointed out), Johny, and more recently "Guru" (Malayalam), in the song Aruna Kirana ...

hi folks, you are talking about two legends.
ilayarajah is the best music director in the world, i am not saying this sake of saying. i am mad about his music and also i listen to western music. 5, 6 minute music in a song or 2,3 hour music in a film, it is a magic what ilaiyarajah produces. most of the times i don't believe that he is a human. how can a human compose like this?
arrahman is the second best to ilaiyarajah.
