Why does Deva sing ?

Can someone tell Deva to stop singing. I think he started singing for heroes, moving from khana songs. It is atrocious.

  there's nowt wrong with his singing. get off his back. u r not (obviouly) gonna criticise IR or ARR so why pick on deva. i like some of his songs just as i like many IR/ARR songs. deva also has that rustic throaty feel/sound and is brill at times. meesakara nanba, salomia, thanjavooru etc... forget ur predjudices and enjoy the voice.

  Prejudices apart, I do believe that deva songs compromise quality for quantity!. (I have to agree that he surprised by giving Aasai, Avvai shanmugi etc...).
  
  ARR and IR never attempted to tear the eardrums of the audience like deva ( specifically his brothers) does!. If you are listening to the 'rusticness' of his voice, YES you may do so!. But don;t even compare that with IR and ARR!. Vandhe maatharam and Santhosha kannere (Uyire) shows that our man can render the voice better that most singers!

  the arguementis not ab who is better, here. it's ab should deva sing at all. didn't MSV and SA rajkumar(?) sing as well.if the song is good why worry ab the quality of the voice.his voice is OK.mick jagger, johny rotten, michael stipe...the list goes on...their voices were never perfect but suited the style as does deva's voice.

  If you want to compare among the current and past singers in Tamil film music Deva is the worst. I like his music not his voice. It was somewhat OK for khana songs but recently for Vijay he sang a song in Nenjinlae. I am really scared what if he starts singing all songs in a film like Ilayaraja.

  they are attrocious...
  gokulathu kanna vaa vaa, a song from gokulathil seethai, was completely spoilt becuase deva sang the last part for manivannan..
  why should everyone assume that fat, black looking people have a course voice/sour throat (whatever the case may be..)
  why cant manivannan or koundamani have song in a movie with a decent voiced singer??
  i really dont understand..

  Actually, we cannot blame Deva. It was the precedent set by Ilayaraja. Of course, many other music directors have sung songs, but Ilayaraja is the one who sung many songs, even for heroes. But, there is subtle difference betweeen Ilayaraja's singing and other music director's singing. Many of the Ilayaraja's songs were quite melodious like Janani.. janani, Idayam oru Koil, Metti oli kaatrodu, the recent one in Kaadal Kavidai. Deva cannot sing with bhaavam and he is fit to sing songs like 'ghaana' paattu for khaana. Above all, he is top of his career and he can dare to play such things. Even MSV had sung songs can you say they are melodius or atleast enjoyable (vellai kaaka mallaka parakkudu and aalukoru theadi vechi aandavan azhaippaan.. aandavan azhaippaan). So for heavensake, we can never compare Deva with other music directors (with respect to singing). So for an individual opinion Deva should stop this atrocity of singing for heroes or even ghaana paattu. How long one can hear or sing 'ghaana' paattu?

  Thingking about Deva, I can only remember him singing ghanaa songs sometimes with meaningful verses but most of times the lyrics will be about love or other things. Jana put it right. IR's voice and bhavaam could not compared to most of other MD's, sorry for arr's fans. IR is the only MD who, I suppose, have the beautiful voice. Other may try like SARajkumar in the Oru Devahdai Vanthu Viddhal in Nee Varuvaai Ena but could match IR. Take Hey Konji Peesu Kannamma in KKavidhai for example. arr is the best suite for humming voices.

  Any one, please correct me if I am wrong. There is no definition for Gaana paattu. Gaana is just a hindi word for song. Our Madrasis have somehow started using this terminology to refer to a kind of 'dappaankuttu' (like the song in Kaadal Kottai - Kavalai padaade sahodara) with a voice like Deva.

  In that case, although I have had the same opinion you had of IR and Bhava in exasperation, ARR uses his family members and friends for the chorus. Also for the children voices, he has always opted for his sister's children. Is this not also cheap labour? Not to mention that ARR's singing is no better than Suresh Peters. Of course, SP has fans too:-).
  
  Hey did you all know that Deva has sung a duet for the first time. I wonder which hero he will be singing for. Does anyone know if Koundamani is acting as a hero in any movie?

  I think Deva's rustic voice is good, for a change than the usual smooth voice of most other singers.One song that lingers in my mind is "Kaanangatha Meenu Vaangi" from Adimachangili.
  His voice somehow goes well with that of Anuradha Sriram in duets.

  Goundamani has acted as hero in a lot of films - "Pattanathil Petti", "Pirandhaen VaLarndhaen", "Oru Nallavan Oru Vallavan", to name a few. MV and Mano have also sung for him. That being the case, I don't think he'll accept Deva singing for him:-)))))

  I think we should not complain about ARR using his nieces and nephews or Deva using his own brother, or IR using his daughters and everybody else in his family. Finally what matters is who shines. In fact most of us do try to help our own people, even if they are not upto the mark. Similarly, ARR is trying to help his own people. All these things won't matter when these big MDs are on top of his career, but these small elements will certainly affect their career over a period of time and some time that could be one of the reasons as to why they lose their position. It was a fact that SPB demanded at one point of time that in every movie he sings, he wants atleast one song for her sister (Shailaja), but it did not last for long.
  
  However, let us not deviate from the topic. I would strongly feel that Deva will not sustain for a long time as a singer, let it be any type of song. For a change, you can listen few songs, but not for ever. But, it is not the same with Ilayaraja. IR has sung many melodious songs and he can never ever be compared with any body like ARR or Deva.

  Answer # 1: "Thenisai Thendral" Deva has a very good rustic voice (just great enough like Malaysia Vasudevan -- just shed your hatred against Deva and you can realize that!) which he wants to share with the Tamil Fraternity.
  
  Answer # 2: If Tamil People can "tolerate" the v(n)oic(s)e of Ilayaraaja and ARR for years, they can really "enjoy" Deva's voice.

  Many of you may be musically intelligent than me. I wish to say IR/ARR/Deva sings because of the compulsion of directors, may be. And it might be very true. They sing for various reasons. The reason could be mostly sentimental but in case of Deva I think he sings for Manivannan/Goundamani. You are definitely giving credit to his voice by talking about that in a forum. Deva is no less MD. I must say this though I am a fan of IR.

  Your posting accusing Devadhi Deva as a fanatic is one that is uncalled for.If U go back and read Devadhi Deva's(DD) posting you'll know.If you still can't analyse it simply means that you're not using your critical analytical thinking capacity.
