Can someone clarify as to how far this is true? I have always read things like these:
"Thamizhagathin moolai mudukkellaam Hindi songs oliththuk kondirundhapOdhu IR ushered in a fresh breath of music..." or something like "Hindi isaiyai rasithukk kOndirundha thamizh rasigargaLai marubadi Thamizh pakkam thiruppiya IR.." and so on...
IR brought in a fresh breath of music - OK. True. But what about the first part of these sentences? Is that true? Was TFM so bad in those days? And was hindi music so good and better then?

I still remember the time when I honesyaadon ki barrat and bobby,hum kisise kum nahin were a real rage -this was before raja came-the hindi film songs were just decimated after raja's advent.we are now back to hindi songs-is this what you call progress?this happened in the interim when MSV was beginning to sound monotonous (just like you all arr fans say about IR now).you can very conveniently forget all this but the facts remain.I have no doubt that all you ARR's fans are feeling very hep and trendy and smirking at all the old timers-just like we all felt when raaja was the raaja.while all the present music directors are just musicians raaja remains the last composer after msv.I have been a visitor in the forum and all the potings I see about ARR's music is about his recording,layering and whatnot.IR touched our hearts-ARR plays to your ears-that is what he will always be.before anyone starts trashing me , I am entitled yo my opinion and you to yours.your music is my noise (and vice versa)

It's true that Bobby, YaadhOn Ki Bharaat, Hum KiseesE Kam Naheen were all hits. They were popular because they had real good songs. But, does that mean TFM songs were no good at that point of time?
In the same note, Qurbani, Ek Tujhe KeliyE, Satyam Shivam Sundaram were all great hits. And FYI, these films were released when IR had established his stance in TFM. Does this mean IR didn't score any good music and that's why these Hindi film songs became hits in the South?
I always felt and still feel that whoever it was that claimed "hindi paadalgaL pakkam irundhu thamizh rasigargaLai thamizhukkuth thiruppiya IR.." is funny!

I agree with Karthi for a change :-)) It is a popular misconception that IR drove Hindi music out, the truth is Hindi music drove itself out and FYI, Hum Kisise... was released in '78, during IR's regime. The reason for the populartity of Hindi songs in the early 70s was good songs mostly sung by a 're-discovered' Kishore Kumar as opposed to a jaded TMS in Tamil, and the phenomenol popularity of Rajesh Khanna.The rise to super-stardom of Amitabh and the decline of Rajesh Khanna were synonymous with a conspicuous dip in HFM (later part of 70s).

Karthi,
those movies are just few exceptions of hindi hits, remember few of these movies had Kamal in it to add to thier popularity.
If IR hadn't appeared in TFM, For sure
tfm might have faded away to hindi FM of LP etc.
MSV was only giving occational goddies. SG were making there usual sub quality music.
TFM would have sure lost its pride. Thats the main point. If there is no pride, there is patronage. Look in to kannada film industry or say marathi film industry. They themselves dont want it. Even if someone realy good appear, they wont bother (like sandeep chowta, he had to go to HFM to get some respect).
Why look else where I wouldnt have given a damn about tamil film or music, if IR wasnt there.
IR gave TFM a life. No doubt.

Stop using caps in your postings - one can understand if you are using HTML tabs and do not realize you are using bold/italics etc while typing, but caps shows up while you type unless you type with your eyes closed.
Also, please refrain from using "poda/pongada" type of usage in your postings. Observing these basic netiquettes would perhaps be a good idea for surfing healthy.

You got the point wrong about the `Raja chasing Hindi away'. No one claims the way you've understood...No, it's not that Raja has stopped Tamils listening to HFM at all (as you've rightly quoted Qurbani was a big hit in TN and so was Disco Dancer)...But it's 100% sure that Raja made elite -repeat elite - and educated Tamils claim that they like and listen to Tamil songs! He popularised Tamil film music in TN unlike any previous era, and it was purely on the strength of music (& not lyric or MGR/Sivaji) and in the mindset of Tamils, removed HFM! I can vouch for this as I personally know a no. of living examples who had lots and lots of HFM LP record collections till late 70's and got `converted':-))

Just go and see raja movies list of 91, 92 and 93.
But then that must the year you had your EAR SURGERY RIGHT!?.
You must have been listening to songs like Khal nayak to show off!.
If you say it was bad then, I would assume just your taste wont go with raja thats all. He made and make great as ever.
