There is no one good shop to buy music in Madras.
The popular albums are easily available. Try StereoVision in Anna Salai (near MLA hostel); behind StereoVision checkout the wholesale shops around Ritchie street area - these is normally the best place to buy music - you can buy at a discount here.
AVM used to have a music exhibition in their Shankara Hall (Mowbrays Road) for about a month during the music season - you can find rare albums here. AudioVision on Ranganathan Street in T.Nagar always discounts cassettes 10%. (No CDs). There is a new american-style music shop in Spencer's Plaza - run by the RPG group. It is mainly for western music - but you can find Tamil CDs there. If you want to record songs go to Stereo House in Ranganathan Street- they have a very extensive collection and are always in demand. Their recording is OK but there is always a 15-day delay - so much demand.

Raja,
The name of the American Style music shop in Spencer's Plaza is Music World. It's really cool place. Check it out.
Landmark also has an good collection.

Guys:
Try "Esquire Musicals" in Vepery near that junction. They are very good and have great collection of songs and the quality of recording is good.

thanks isai priyan. I was trying hard to remember the name
of the shop in vEpEri. In fact, they can dig out any unknown
song but the usual time (some 4 or 5 years back was) is
about a month. Great place to hunt.

Guys, I will give you the best place to get all the 70's and 80's albums and most of Raja's entire old works. Go to Kelly's near the round tana, there is a shop, next to the mattresses shop and also one waste paper/old magazine shop. In other words opposite the kellys Abirami theater bus stand, before Abirami theater and near the round tana. I got almost all Raja's collection of his firts hundred films in about 10 (90 minute cassettes)
Good luck.
Please remind my name. There is a guy by name Ibrahim.

I had recently sent some tapes to Madras for recording, and got to know that Esquire Musicals, Vepery, no longer does any recordings. I got the name of the store from this page, and thought I'd let others know.
Stereo House (also mentioned earlier in this page), Ranganathan Street, is still open.

Friends,
Let me chip in with a few names -
1. RAGHAVENDRA MUSICALS on Station Road on the other side of Ranganathan Street - they have an extensive collection of Raja's 80s and 70s songs and also the CDs - recording is good - especially if you mention that it has to be good !!
2.There is one electronic shop near the first stop after Ashok Pillar towards West Mambalam, i.e., 12G, 11D,11J,11E route. This shop is located within a small enclosure - like complex - it has no name by itself - it looks like a audio servicing shop - but dear me, they have a terrific collection of LPs and CDs -you can try recording there.
3.Just a hundred metres before the Virugambakkam bus stop, there is a housing complex (a residential apartment area),where you will find "ANUDH AUDIO" - this is just two -three years old and they have a good collection of almost all Raja's songs/CDs.Recording is also good.
4.One stop before Padma Sheshadri stop in K.K.Nagar, there is this "AUDIO POINT" with a good collection of not only Raja's , but also others' songs.
I will enquire about other places and let you know.

Hi Guys,
There are a few of them in Mylapore too.
1. Anand Musicals
2. Sharath Musicals.
Both of e are opposite the Anjeneyar Temple on Royapettah High Rd, Luz( Near Sanskrit College ). I get all my tapes recorded from them. I was able to find all the 70-80 IR hits and oldies too. They also have an interesting collection of CDs that u might get from Mustafa in Singapore. Only problem with these is that they are usually combined with some other drab stuff( songs from movies that doesnt have good music or other songs that probably are defenitely way below par ). I could get CDs of Priya, Ullaasa Pravaigal etc from those shopa. U can defenitely get it recorded cos they have the old LP's of those movies. But the recording is not all that wonderful but I guess its OK. And they arent all that big stores like stereo vision on Mount Road.

This is a great topic, guys.
Can someone find out if any Music store in Madras or Singapore is willing to record & ship special request compilations to US?
Also, could we start a thread where people can give lists of songs in their possession so we can swap, record, trade TFM with each other. I saw some discussions alluding to this in the Archives but it doesn't seem like any such thing is going on.
For instance, I've been searching for songs from Natpu, Naan Vaazha Vaippen, Eera Vizhi Kaaviyangal, etc.
IR reservoirs like Nithin, k r ravi, speak up guys.

I agree with you, this is a place I have all the information to spend my evening hours in Chennai, make new friends and smoke some fine beedis while getting my recording done! Man, I regret for not starting my stereo shop a few years back. Now the interest in Raja is deepening and as old is becoming gold there is a wild rush for anything Raja. I have seen the wait a few years back when I was home!!!
This is a thread I will definitely keep looking for information. I have known a few places in Vadapalani and Annanagar West, excellent places for Raja's oldies! I will try later to tell you guys.

vijay,
Are you from Trichy? I am from Trichy, but in S'pore for last 4 years. Till I left Trichy,as far as I know the only good shop for Raja collection especially is Kannan & Co in Big Bazaar st. Then ofcourse CD was not easily accesible/available.
Folks,
I have more than 60 CD collections of IR. More than half of them are real good combinations and worth for the money. About 3/4 of my collection I bought it for about S$13 to S$ 15. I used to buy in wholesale shop and the guy there gives gives a bit of discount as I buy atleast 3 everytime I visit. Since last prices dropped and I bought the rest for about S$10. Recently there are some real good collections/combintations available for quite cheap price like S$6 S$7. Record quality is quite OK. Ofcourse definitely better than those tape collections I had earlier(almost 60-70, again only IR collection :-)
Those friends in US, shall trying buying in s'pore as they usually take transit here. If anybody needs help in getting IR's old collection here, please let me know. It's pleasure as it is after all a service to IR :-)) If you think the price is cheap I will give pointers about where to buy.
About MiniDisc>> Any of you tried recording in MD from CD? Do we get the same recording quality as in the original CD? I really interested in making a digital collection of my own. Any tips are greatly appreciated as I intend to buy a DENON system very soon. My favourite is Kenwood, but I try the other high-end system. Any comments on DENON please...

mfm,
thanks.i used to stay in BHEL,trichy where i did my schooling but presently my residence is in srirangam and i'll be going to india shortly.if u know of any shops in the vicinity of main guard gate or rockfort temple and if u remember the directions let me know.u may send me a separate mail.
one of my main worries is that the early 80's songs of raja are difficult to get and even if u get it the recording is done with a constant hissing noise.examples of some remote films from which i want to record songs are
aradhanai,karumbu vil,vidiyum varai kaathiru,
aval appadithaan etc.
so keeping all this in mind i want u to suggest me a good shop which has the CD's for all of these old films.
