Hi everybody!
I've already introduced myself to some of you
in another thread. You can call me TRV or Venkat.
I'm planning to enter the Tamizh Film Music
scene as a Music Director. I plan to start my
attempts at getting into the industry by the
New Year and hopefully I should be able to get
some breaks in a few years. I just finished my
Masters (in the unrelated field of Computer
Science). Namma ooru Madras.
Well, since there is a sizeable collection of
Tamil Film Music enthusiasts here, I thought I
could get your comments and criticisms on one
of my compositions. It is stored in .wav format
at location http://web.qualcomm.com/~tvenkata/thegam.wav " target="_top">http://web.qualcomm.com/~tvenkata/thegam.wav">http://web.qualcomm.com/~tvenkata/thegam.wav
I hope atleast some of you would be able to
listen to it and give me your frank opinion.
Another hope is that this tune shouldn't
be published under some other MDs name in the
future. So, I will be removing the song in a few
days. Hope you all can visit the site and give
me your inputs at the earliest.
Ungal nal vaazhthukkalai ethirpaarthirukkum.

P.S.: I composed, played, sequenced and sang(!)
this song. It was written by a friend of mine
-- Vignesh.

Please don't hesitate to say bad things -- I have
a lot to learn.

I am not able to connect to the website you had mentioned. If you can make it available across some other site where everyone can access your composition, you can expect responses.

TRV,
Vanakkam bha.
Even I was unable to access.
This might be an intranet site in qualcomm,
which can be accessed only by qualcomm people,
you might have to post it in the WWW outside
your firewall.
Hope this helps.

Well, I asked people here if it was intranet --
but they insist it is internet! Anyway, I've
hosted it on a geocities site. Hope some people
will be able to access it atleast now. The site

Do let me know. Apologies for all inconvenience caused.
Eagerly awaiting your responses.

I could listent to your composition now! Its very good! Except that I couldnt listen to the pallavi part completely or for that matter, the charanam too.... The wave file download was for only 1092K ! and was not complete!
Is that the max you have allowed?
In any case I wish to listen to the entire comp. Its good.

Congratulations! I couldn't get the whole song - only the pallavi ( the file size was 1.06MB). The initial music was a bit predictable but the once the vocal piece started it is very melodious. Wish you all the success.
BTW 'dhegam thaniththriukkum egandha veLai' that means the mind is wandering somewhere else? Just kidding..

Is there a wav player for UNIX (solaris?). Sorry for the
digression. Or TRV can you convert your file to downloadable RA
or au file?
Hope to listen to your work soon.

I was able to listen using a windows emulator. Once the vocals
start the song sound really good. Will reserve my comments till
I get to hear the whole song.
Good job charlie.

Hi all,
I really thank you all whole-heartedly:
1) For taking the time to listen to my song
2) For actually thinking about the song and the
orchestration
3) For spending time and replying to the song
either by personal email or through this forum.
About unmai-vilambi's comment:
Your comments are taken with all respect. A
lot of people have told me this -- that there is
a lot of politics out there... but it's difficult
for me to explain why I'm trying to do all this.
I believe in destiny and in self-realization and
actualization. I've tried to look into this
matter with as much introspection as possible and
though one can never KNOW what HE IS, one CAN and
I believe one SHOULD TRY TO KNOW. And among other
things, I feel that the only way I can actualize
myself is if I really give this venture a shot.
I may be successful, very possibly may not, but
it is important for me to know that I tried...
and in that I actualize myself. Thanks for your
concern ... will keep that in mind.
Gopal: Did you get the email I sent you? Your
vaazhthukkal are accepted with all mariyaadhai!
Thanks bha!
Sunil, aruLarasan, Ravichandran: Nandri. BTW,
is aruLarasan == Rajan? I got two emails from
your address -- one signed Rajan and Leonard and
one signed aruLarasan. Idhu enna kozhappam?
I've also gotten some honest criticisms about
the song which I very much appreciate. Some of
those:
1) The starting piece is pretty normal:
I was trying to set the initial mood for
an overcast sky and the subject of the song being
alone, enjoying the nature. Every piece is not
meant to be highly exciting, because it makes
exciting pieces normal.
2) The drum machine programming is crude:
True. You should understand that I'm not
a well-equipped musician with a sound studio. I
have the Yamaha PSR-510 keyboard and four track
recorder -- that was about all I had for this
song. I used the drum pads on the keyboard and
it allows you to have just a couple or so of
drum sequences to be stored. Also it has just
six tracks and it runs out of memory after about
3 minutes of sequencing. So, memory was a
scarce resource. I sequenced about 3 minutes,
then recorded it onto my 4-track. Then sequenced
another 3 minutes -- appended it with the first
3 minutes. Then added a couple of tracks --
pretty messy huh?
3) Voice?!!!:
I'm not the greatest voice around and that's
pretty obvious. To add to my misery, I added
echo spatial effect using my AIWA system
Karaoke!!! No effects processor, whatsoever!
Definitely makes things worse.
I'm not making excuses. I'm learning and
have a lot to learn. I appreciate your comments
and hope you'll all be honest with me. Its
wrong for me to expect everybody to like my
music -- everybody doesn't like IR or ARR or
even Mozart for God's sake! But please do keep
your honest comments coming and you'll get my
equally honest responses.
Thanks all!

Dear TRV:
I could not download the file...in spite of trying repeatedly...from both the sites..I can comment only if I hear..
Meanwhile...I am in the field of music for the last 35 years...worked in Films Division New DElhi with Anil Biswas, Satish Bhatia, Raas Dutta etc etc for over 10 years...I have my digital project studio in Toronto...and have released my first album last year. This year I am releasing three more albums..believe me it is a tough world out there... I know I am ready to score music for films since ten years...and I haven't succeeded yet...but like most others' comment...it is no harm trying..specially when people with least talent and best sucking-up capabilities are out there..in India.
Why don't you check out my site...
http://www.concentric.net/~Art-east/
and visit the studio page to listen to some songs on realaudio.?
I do music on over 100 tracks...and use as good or even better equipment than ARR!!. I write, Compose, arrange, play, track and sequence, sing, play the audio percussions like tabla etc..all by myself...it takes me close to a year doing an album..!!!!
Good luck!

First of all let me thank you because you
are such an experienced person in this field and
I really appreciate the fact that you took your
time to respond to me.
I visited your site and was able to catch
only 3 samples from bhajans of yours. Are there
any other samples?

Dear TRV:
Right now only three songs are there... I will be putting the others soon after launching the other three albums.
The first one is a classical vadyavrindam with carnatak and hindusthani musicians and 20 singers, blending with western jazz and pop...recorded live in Kuwait. It took us 6 months to get it ready with a 45 piece orchestra..live
The second one is a Hindi pop album ...todays fever..! with a song in punjabi..all set to rock pop soul etc..etc. I am making a music video for this by Jan and then release the album after that.
The third is a tamil film music album with IR's songs..with instrumental tracks..
You are right..you must protect your composition..
Firstly get them copyrighted either by sending to the American Association of Composers or to the SOCAN ( in Canada) or by punching the album in a reputed company ( the costly way!!!)
I have distributed 'Anjali exteremely well in North America and taking it now to Far east UK and Europe and to India!! soon..
Distribution is 10 times harder than composing and recording. Getting into Film music is 10 times harder than promoting your own work.. I have a lot of friends in the Cine Circle...in Bombay, Madras and Delhi..but getting the right break is the hard part..I will leave everything and go if I get that..!!
Good luck and keep in touch!!
By the way...send me your sample ..so I can comment..

Dear TRV:(cont'd)
My advise is not to make comments on compressed audio files . These are only for an idea of the music.. .. and in mono..In fact my samples of the Bhajans are a far cry from the actual DDD CD recorded on 100 tracks and in full Stereo wirh 270 degrees of effects..If you get a CD ,...play it on a good system with good speakers and ..you will know the difference.
If you want a copy e-mail me for info..
So...even if others listen to your sample on the net it may not be a correct assessment.. I thought I should make you aware..
Dr. Siva
Good luck.!
