Whilst IR, ARR, Deva and even KR have their very own staunch supporters, MD's such as Sirpi, Vidyasagar, Aadityan, etc. have been quietly doing their bit for TFM. Besides one-time wonders such as Ullathei Alli Thaa, what made me sit up and notice such MD's were good-to-listen songs such as Alps malai kaatru vanthu... from Thedinein Vanthathu. We will be doing great injustice, if we ignore some of these MD's better compositions. I'm sure many of you would like to share your favourites with the rest of us ....... and who knows, we may come up with quite a list! :-))

NOV, just because you added etc. in your post, I'm adding some of my favorites from bAlabharathi.
1. unnai thotta thendral (thalai vAsal)
2. one more song from thalai vAsal ( i forgot the starting line of that song, but remember, the heroine will dance with her college mates somewhere in kodaikanal. i think the song has word kuyil or kuyilgal in the starting line)
3. thAjmahal thEvai illai (amarAvathi)
4. poo malarnthathu (amarAvathi)
5. adi sOppu sundari (amarAvathi) liked this while doing my undergraduate, not that much now. Am I matured or what? !!!

Listen to 'poo malarnthathu', if you get a chance. I love this song too. Bala Bharathi(as you write) composed music for a tele serial called 'nilA'. then the same team came up with amarAvathi. But it's very unfortunate that he didn't come up with good songs after those two movies. I assume he has scored music for three or four movies including these two. Now he is composing for Mahendran's movie. I'm expecting some good numbers from Bala!!

The serial was 'neelaa maalaa'. During RR of that serial, IR happened to pass by. He heard that BGM and had told Balabaarathi that he has a good future. BB told this in his interview.
After 'thalaivaasal' and 'amaraavathi' I thought he is going to be here for sometime. But unfortunately his 'aavathum peNNAlE azivathum peNNAlE' flopped and now he is nowhere. And that song you mentioned is 'athikaalaik kaatrE nillu'. It's one of SJ's best.

Just like MPR did, I'm zeroing in on your "etc" too.
yaen peNNendru piRandhAi sung by Unnikrishnan to music set by Shiva for the movie "Love Today".
malaRE mounamA by Vidyasagar has continued to stay special. I'm wondering if it will become an eternal classic for me--time will tell.
KeeravANi's music in Devaragam had a refreshingly different flavor too.

Vidya sagar is a very unique and talented md. He should be applauded for creating his unique style without sounding oldish. Though I did not get to listen to all of his songs, whatever I listened so far, he never fails to amaze me. He is equally good at fast paced songs and slow melodious ones. Already other mds have started to copy his music stlye.
Listen to s.a. rajkumar's nagma nagam in uyire
unakagga. It has lots of VS influence.
Puttham pudhu desam ( karna),
malare mounamma ("") ( kanchana, as
we discussed in the email, it is one of the best in
recent times).
udaiyathe vennilla ( priyam)
Dilruba Dilruba ("')
what about the songs in subash and senkottai?. I am yet to listen to them.
Another talented MD, who is yet to make it big, is soundariyan.
kaddal kadihtam varienthen from the film
cheran pandiyan is very a good song.He wrote
the lyrics too in that film. There are
couple of good songs in gopura deepam.
It is indeed sorry to see talented MD like balabharathi not getting any assignments. His songs in amaravathi are too good, Puthum pudhu malare, is a lovely song. I hope, he will create the same magic in the mahendran film. The Interlude music in Taj mahal theviyi illai from the same film sounds very much IRish. I might be wrong, but What I heard is, balabharathi is a handicapped person. If it is true, this guy is really amazing.
What about anand, who scored music in sakthi?. I think he is doing a hindi film currently.
I did not like any songs of sirpi other than UAT.

11. I love you (film: kodi parakkuthu music:hamsalekha)
12. sElai kattum pennukkoru (film: kodi parakkuthu music:hamsalekha)
Songs which are not coming to my mind right now, but know the movies. Hope somebody will help me out here. There is a beautiful duet song in 'mannukkul vairam', scored by 'dEvEndran'. And one duet song in 'vEdham pudhidhu', this is also by dEvEndran.

Wasn't 'thaNNIR thaNNIR' by MSV?
Ramki
There was another good song in 'maNNukkuL vairam'. It goes like 'muththu siriththathu mullai vediththathu' - SJ & SPB
Sirpi has deteriorated very badly. All his songs now have the same beat as 'azagiya lailaa' which itself is not original.
Vidyasagar gives great songs in between but most of his songs are very noisy and lot of ARR style wailing in them. That spoils the song. His recent great song is from 'uyirOdu uyiraaga' - a slow duet sung by Chitra and Hariharan. i forgot the lyrics. Had the song been sung by SJ & SPB, it could have been another 'malarE maunamaa'.

Sirpi's First song is a good one, he himself would have forgotten at this stage. Since the film was an utter flop "Annai Vayal" it failed to be in the limelight. The song starts as "Malligai".
Soundaryan has scored few good songs in Cheran Pandian, Sindhunathi poo.
Kaadhal kaditham - Cheran pandian
Maththalam Kottudhadi - Sindhu nathi poo
How about S.A.Rajkumar? He gave 4 complete hit films so far. Sinna poove mella pesu, Manasukkul Maththappu, Pudhu vasantham, Poove unakkaga. I am not aware of Sooryavamsam songs.

This thread now started to appear as non IR hits of 80's and 90's.
MPR,
Thannier thannier is by MSV, not by VSS.
Ramki, is it not agni satchi is the last film MSV-KB worked together. TT came in 1980 and agni satchi came around 1983-84.
satya,
I am happy that you also liked the song
kadhal kaditham from cheran pandiyan.
I like another song of Vidyasagar in the film
nethaji - Rokkolighi koovadhu - It is Good as any recent arr dance no, at the same time very different. This film should be having some more
good songs too.
There should be few good songs in pasum ponn, mr. madras, villathi villan. mustafa all scored by VS. I think VS is not lucky to get
hit films like deva, ARR in recent times, otherwise he should be the top MD in TFM.I hope he will be in the future. Did he have any
good songs in his first film( janakaraj was the hero, I forget the name of the movie). I think
he scored some mallu movies and was very
successful there too. I think that the only good thing arjun did to TFM, is finding this guy.
Some of adithyan goodies
1. Chintamani chintamani - Killakku karai- Chitra
2. Song by gurdass mann in the film maman magal - I forget the lines, it is a very cute song.
3. all the songs in amaran and couple of in
sevelarapendi pandiyan. Roja malare seems to be a hit recently.
I remember one vague song by sirpi in the film
usilampatti penn kutti. This came along with muthu, so I could not escape listening to it.
The song starts some thing like 'duel vadhiyare duel'. Initially I got irritated listening to it, but after
few hearings, I really started liking this song.
The other MDS to make any impact in late 80's and 90's
As mentioned S.A. Rajkumar gave big hits
in cinna poove meela pesu, manasukkul mattappu, pudu vasantham, puriyada pudir, and
poove unnakaga recently.
Manoj kiyan were very successful from ummai villigal to innaidha karangal. They disappeared
with out any trace like their mentor abavanan.
Margathamani was really good in allaghan, vaname ellai and one more vasanth film ( the famous song nivetha).
baskar,
I know anand scored one good song in sakthi, but I dont know it is achu vellame. He is the next one to watch out for. Currently he is
scoring music for a hinid film zor starring sunny deol and susmihta senn.

Vannam Konda
Agaram Ippo
Idho Idho
Unnai Kanda pinbuthan
Jannali ( It was not popular that time, but Deva has succesfully used the tune in Kaadhal Kottai - "Kalamellam kaadhal vazhga" the title song)
Bagyaraj!!!
Ammaadi idhudhan Kaadhala
Nan Aalana Thamarai
I remember the film "mannukul vairam" in which the class of songs came closer to raja. The songs were
1. Ponnaaraththa Poovaraththa podu
2. Idhalodu idhal serum neram
some more I do not remember.
Later he has done for Barathiraja in "Vedam Pudhidhu"
1. Kannukul Nooru Nilavu
2. Puththam pudhu olai varum
Recently he changed his name to ravindran and performed for "Pudhita Thendral"
There was a good song in "Naan Adimai Illai" from "Vijay". The song is "Oru Jeevan than". Many still think it is Raja's. He went to malayalam then. He has sung the "Pudhu vellai mazhai" from Roja and "Netru illatha matram" from Pudhiya Mugam". His name now is "Unni Menon"

1) VSNarasimhan also worked with KB for 'kalyaaNa agathigaL'
2) 'iNaintha kaikaL' was scored by Gyan Varma, the second half of Manoj-Gyan. Manoj was not involved.
3) Nethaji had 2 more wonderful songs - nerungka nerungkath thaan neruppaachchu (Sj & SPB) and raappOthu aatharavu (female solo).

The vijay you are talking about is vijay anand. If I am not mistaken, he is from kannada film world. Infact the producer of that film dwarakesh, is also from kannada. I am not sure, if this is the same vijay, who is later known as unni menon. But he may be not. Naddem shravan copied his
songs in the film deewana, which he went to get
a filmfare world for best music.
Gangai amaran songs in 80's
1. Valve mayam
2. Savall - Oru nanbanin kadhai idthu
3. En thangathchi padichava - sondha sumai
tookhi sordhnu ponnen
4. Oru Iniya sudandiram - Enru madiyum indha

Just a few of my favorite songs:
Anand: "Achchu Vellame" from "Sakthi" and even "Maanamadurai Ponne," and "Yaanai Yaanai" from the same film. (Quite an interesting Vadivelu dance for the last song :-)
Vidyasagar: "Adi Aaththi," "Thaamarai Poovukkum" from "Pasum Ponn," "Aanandham Aanandham" from "Murai Maaman," Pretty much all the Karna songs, especially "Hello Chellamma," and "Malare Mounamaa?".. Despite the irattai arththa lyrics, "Muththam Thara Yeththa" from "Jai Hindh,"
There was one song from "Aayudha Poojai" starting like "Akka kullikkiraa".. have heard only a few times.. sounded okay (always willing to give Vidyasagar the benefit of the doubt!:-), "Vaarai En Thozhiye," "Vaasaghi," and "Arasiyal" from "Arasiyal," "Uchchi Mudhal Paadham," "Paadu Paadu Bharatha" and "Bhoomiye Bhoomiye" in "Shengotai,"
Adithyan: "Oyila Paadum Paattula" and "Kizhakku Sevakkaiyile" from "Seevalaperi Paandi," "Azhagoviyam" from "Roja Malare," Definitely, "Deivame idhu nyaayamaa?" from "Udhavum Karangal," (though a sad song sung by Rajagopal (Newsreader Sandhya's husband!).. I still enjoy listening to this song on occasion.
(The only thing about Adithyan is that he is inconsistent in giving hits.. at least it has been that way for quite some time.)
Philip & Jerry: Despite the fact that "Thotta Shinungi" did not fare well at the box office, I actually liked almost all the songs that they had composed for the film! "Namma Rajini Varaar Bavani," "Nammoda Thalaivaru," "Ramya Ramya," "Maname Thotta Shinungi," and even "Pep..Pepsi Cola".. Unfortunate that it is so difficult for them to make a comeback (even though news is that they are trying for one right now!)
Sirpi: Though it has vulgar lyrics, a song "Kuzhandhaikku pasi yeduththaal" from "Mani-Ratnam" was pretty acceptable from Sirpi. I won't deny that I did like "Kottai Paakkum" from "Naattaamai" and "Azhagiya Lailaa" from "Ullaththai Allithaa".. There is a new song from "Udhavikku Varalaama," begins as "Salakku Salakku" which is pretty good too.
Yuvan Shankar: Don't know if you would necessarily include him in the "other music directors' list" but hey, he's new!.. I enjoyed "Kaadhal, Kaadhal" "Poovaattum, Kaaiyaattum," and didn't even mind "Hey Ponnamma, (with little rap bits by Yuvan which I liked) and "Eera Nilaa" from "Aravindhan."
That's all I could think of right now..
Sandya..

MPR,
The film name I was referring ,is kilaku mugam.
Thanks for letting me know other kilaku ??? movies. I checked my cd ( all time favorities from
pyramid), it is indeed adithyan and chitra.
Sandhya,
I think it is legal to include him here. All the songs in aravindhan are good, though songs
eera nila ( from mahanathi), poovattam Kaaiyaattum ( from cooli) are inspired from other
sources. My favorite goes to the unni krishanan solo (surrum boomi) , with all the best not far behind.
I have a query for a song here. Recently I got
an assorted collections of 80's song and one
of the song in that collection is,
' Hello rosi,
ellam rasi,
st el la,
stella"
It does not look like a IR song, more like a
T.Rajendar or Sankar ganesh song. Did any
one have any info about this song?

I know an old song that goes like:
My Name is Rosy;
Ennai Nee Nesi;
Kangalaal Pesi, Konjalaam Yosi;
My Name is Rosy;
(PS: I did not make this up - Ramki, help!!!)
Looks like another "Rosy" song in TFM

E.Hari,
what is the mahanadhi inspiration for "eera nila"
song? "poovaattam" case is very obvious.
Yes, I have also heard this "stella" song, but
can't recollect the movie.

E.Hari:
Sorry I got back so late. The MD for is Anand you are right and the one good song which you mentioned is acchuvellamae achuvellamae :)
Amar:
Thanks for sending me the latest melodies in TFM.
The first two songs in Arasial is quite impressive by Vidyaasaagar isn't it ? Having used Western beats for a Classical & Hindustaani based song is truely appreciative of his talent.
Song #1: VaaraayO en thOzhiyaE, Kulam Vazhavae, nadai pOttu vaa
The modulation and voice of the female singer during the charanam is very different, and vidyasaagar has handled the music quite differently. Aaana indha raagam romba familiar-aa irukku. The pallavi of this song is also very melodious and has a connection to the charanam.
The second interlude seems to be a Hindustaani kind of raagam :-)
Paanipuri-yil saambar, thayir, rasamum kalandhu kuduthaa maadiri irukku :-))))) But the taste seems to be good, have anyone tried this kind of combination before, Well Vidyasaagar has :-)))
Overall, I got impressed with the song the first time I listened to it.
Song #2: Vaa sakhi Vaa sakhi is also a classical based song with westernised percussions and beats. Good Melody! The beats are very typical of Vidyasagar, similar to the Dilruba Dilruba. The specialty of this song seems to lie in the mix of Electric Guitar used for Metal Rock and Hard Rock Music in the West is used for a Melodious Classical based Tamizh Song very effectively, can you imagine, EG denotes Electric Guitar in the below line :-)))
The music goes like this . . .
EG peice, aaaaahhhh, EG, aaaahhhh, EG, aaaaahhhh, Beats, aaaa, Beats EG aaaaahhh
Fits very well in to the music.

Rajaraman,
Eera nila song sounds very similiar to the song 'Thuvakkam enge' (SPB, SJ) from mahanathi. This song was not in the movie. Even I noticed it was not in some of mahanathi cassesets.

Bhaskar:
You are welcome! I tried to pick a variety of good melodious songs for you and a couple of modern-age( thassu bhussu englibhishu ) songs. Most of the songs are melodious and I am sure you will enjoy after hearing a couple of times. Especially, the songs in "Porkkaalam" by Deva are good ones. What did you think about all the songs? ( Just curious to get an idea about your taste! ).
I had incorrectly written "Shiva" as the music directory for "Ithuthaan Kaathal( Abbas & Simran )", it is actually "Kotti" who did the music and the director is "Shiva" - sorry!
I will make another cassette with some other songs and send you soon.
Yes, "Arasiyal" songs are excellent( there are three other songs which are okay( two of which are typical Vidhyasagar songs ) and hence, I did not put them for you ). If you want these, I can add it to the next cassette.

The new voice in "Vaaraai Yenn Thozhiyey" is by a famous Hindustani Singer, "Shobha Mutkkal". That is kind of different( welcome one ) to TFM, right?
Guys, sorry for the digressssssssssions!!!

The title song in Arasiyal is 'inspired' by an old NSKrishnan-TAMathuram duet.
Adithyan had some great songs in SeevalapEri pANdi.

For Chinghuchaa song the MD is by Deva :-) Ammam neega sollraa maadiri andha paadal dhaan Bangalore and tamizhnadu-la romba hit aana paadal. It has the typical Deva beats :-). But I liked the Kana kuruvi song very much.
