Hey Thomas
Have you got any malayalam interviews of Chitra's. If so, can you write them in english and post. I am also a fan who seems to miss pretty much all the interviews that she has given.

Aruvi,
I have one from the Malayala Manorama newspaper, but it is so long, almost like a dissertation:) .....besides I don't have it with me right now, it's at home. But if I get a chance during break sometime, i'll try to post it up.
By the way, have you or anyone heard of that 'Rugga Rugga' tape that she did for Magnasound? I haven't gotten my hands on it yet.

Yes I have heard it a couple of times. They put the video on this show called 'Asian Horizon' near the time of its release. But I don't remember it well. If you want more info, check out magnasounds website. They have info on all the cassettes Chitra did for them.

The reason I said mail is because I am not sure if the other TFMers will be as interested as we would be. So if you don't think it is necessary to mail then you can post here. Should I mail or post. By the way do you know tamil because the ones I have are in tamil and I will have to translate it all in english if you don't know tamil. And maybe if you knew tamil then you probably have seen them already.

Hey aruvi and Thomas,
You have individual e-mail accounts, right! Then please keep your private discussions to your e-mails and DO NOT use the DF for letting each other know what you do with your other hand when you are typing. Please spare us from he details.

Hey RajaG
My post was to inform Thomas why I made the mistake. Not to inform all the rest. So far, we have only been exchanging posts about a TFM personality and no one has said anything. As far as I could make out, so far we are the only ones who were participating in this thread. So excuse my ill knowledge of not being aware that people start giving comments when least expected.
Wow, why is everyone so edgy on this forum today.

Seven hundred and fifty songs a year. Fondly named 'Chinna Kuyil', Chitra has sung over 11 000 songs and lives in Salygramam, Chennai. Let alone the time she is singing, one can let her talk all day and listen. She's got that kind of an ice cream voice.
"Ice cream and my voice have no match. Aiyyo, shouldn't even think about it." Chitra exclaims, happily.
'Who is responsible for her growth?' She starts counting with her fingers - like a child.
GURU OMMANAKUTTY
My parents wanted my older sister Beena to learn Carnatic music. You could say that I got a little knowledge of listening whenever my sister was learning music. When I was studying in seventh grade they sent me to learn music seperately from Professor Ommanakutty, who was teaching at a music college... I was her first Sishyaii. When school let out in the evenings, I had music lessons. Even if it took my father till eight or nine to come get me, I would finish all my school homework in " Miss's " house and wait for him. Because her own daughter was younger than me, she taught me with as much concern as she did for her daughter. Later when she went to do concerts, I would do Keerthanais. Miss, who is the first fully responsible person for my growth, still teaches in Thiruvananthapuram. Singers like Arunthathi and Sinthu Sha learned music from her.
FATHER
My father Krishnan Nayar used to be the headmaster of a school. He also did light music on the radio. I have one older sister and a younger brother. But my father had a lot more affection for me. He carried a lot of burden for my growth.
Ever since I was young I have had a little too much fear. Whenever I went to to another place for recording, he comes with me. For this, he used to put all his other work aside. My father got throat cancer because of smoking!
A song was being recorded in AVM in 1985 for Shanker-Ganesh film. During the recording time my father had extreme pains in his throat. I started crying seeing him sit there trying to endure the pain. He wouldn't leave when I called him to go see the doctor. He only moved after the song was recorded.
My father, who was overjoyed with every step of my growth, has never congratulated or praised me in person. He would only point out the errors.
When I first recieved my national award, I wanted him to go to Delhi and recieve the award on my behalf. But his health did not allow that to happen. He was overjoyed when he watched me recieve the award on TV. My father, who wanted very much to see me get married, died five days after my engagement.
JESU(DAS) BROTHER
In a opening day of an arts club, I sang my first song with Jesu Anna.
Beginning from the fact that a playback singer has opportunity until there voice does not thaeyaama, (sorry can't think what the english equivalent is in right now) to how to protect your voice, I have learned a lot from Jesu Anna. 'Pine apple, maathulai' should not be eaten. 'Neela kadalai' skin should not be eaten. Should not touch yogourt. Using Ayurvedic medicine that prevents water from staying in your hair too long and wearing cotton in ears when going on a train AC couch are some of a lot of principles I follow Jesu Anna on.
JANAKI AMMA
In general when I sing, if it is a sad song, my eyes start watering. If it is a happy song my face shows how happy I feel. But as far as I have seen, only Janakiamma's voice changes and does the job. There would be no reaction on her face. This is very suprising thing. All came from her experience. When talking about experience, you can say that Janakiamma is like a dictionary to the rest of us.
Teasing in the voice, childness, passion, (paricaasam?) anything like this, Janakiamma's voice can be show as an example. Think about it, "inji iduppazhaga" song and "raasavae una nambi" song are examples of innocence.
Janakiamma can show affection like a mother...she's very loving. Recently I went to a 'Kozhu'. She hugged and welcomed me and insisted that I should sing that day. I sang one keerthanai very shyly.
ILLAYARAJA
Well most of this stuff I have posted in the tidbits section a while ago so I don't think I need to again.
...well, S.L, that's all for now. I got this interview from Ananda Vikatan 11.10.98 issue. Tell me what you think. I will post some later if anyone else is interested.

Aruvi:
Thanks for the interview. KJY is addressed as Dasettan (pronounced "Daasaettan") by most people who know him. The closest in Tamil would be Das annan.
BTW, there is a separate thread exclusively dealing with interviews.

"750 songs a year!" WOW! Are there any other south indian singers who are so much in demand? Maybe SPB or Yesudas right? Let's hope she will be singing for a long time to come!
Thanks Aruvi

I know. But I thought it would be more appropriate here since this thread is exclusively on chitra's interview. Mmm.. so where should I post the next one.
