Were Ullaasam songs so bad?

Ravi,
It's not that they are bad. There is nothing new. We are
not expecting such songs from someone in Ilayaraja
family. (karthik raja is supposed to be notable in this
family, isn't it?) He needs to come out of the mould of
"indhirane muzhu chandirane", "en raasi" kind of songs.
He seems to follow it in every other movie. "nathiyoram
veesum thendral"(Alexander) was a welcome change, but
the rest in this movie were sort-of trash. I think most will
agree with me if I say there was a significant drop in
his standrards in this movie. Another saddening feature
he is going "Rahmanish" (as Ramki pointed out)....
Listen to "Konjum manjal pookal"(ullaasam). It looked like
enacting "telephone manippol"..

p.s.: you can listen to "konjum manjal pookal" now on TFM
page.

Karthik Raja is not going stale! That is too strong a statement. He is trying new things, but the songs do not seem impressive (esp. Ullasam). He can do better than just appear confused in his songs.

Trying new things? Going Rahmanish maybe one.. :-)
Getting many actors to sing a song, maybe one more..!
Surely we don't expect such things from someone
considered good in Ilayaraja family.

The songs in Manickam were excellent and they did not have Ilayaraaja's or Rehman's influence. And in Ullasam, the song "Yaaro Yaar Yaaro" was simply superb and a class. I think Karthik Raaja is trying to get the full attention of the public by composing music that is like Rehman as it is the trend now. There is no doubt that he will give excellent tunes like his father in future.

Right Now the trend in the Tamil film music
is very voltatile. Even Rahman is not composing
his songs in the same style as accused of him.
Look at the differences between Iruvar
, Minsara kanavu and Indian. They are very
different from each other. So are Karthik's
albums. Konjum Manjal Pookal sounds like
Telephone Mani because of the choice of the
singers and not because of the tune. Did anybody notice the musical interlude in the
song. It is so pretty. I am certainly against
the opinion Karthik is going stale. Remember
he is in the most difficult position in the industry
being Illayaraja's son. Every song of his is going
to be compared against his father's skills.
Hopefully this burden will not be detrimental
for him.

I have heard Karthik Raja's songs. I am proud to say that he has his own style and is certainly working hard to earn his name worthy of the Raaja himself.
Karthik has realized that today's music is more rhythm oriented and so is bringing out remarkable beats. He seems to emphasise that today's audience has less time for, and less of appreciative nature (musical sophistication) for the complex and ethereal mix of instrumental interludes that once was the forte of his great father and even MSV. You will realise this point I am trying to make by the interlude compositions of A R Rahman which simply cannot make it to the level of his beats or foottapping tunes.
I mean we, the older generation of listeners liked pure melody and great interludes because we were not into rhythms meant for dancing and therefore were more musically sophisticated.
I am sure you all agree with my viewpoint. My sincere wishes for Karthik Raja because I know he is making great efforts to deserve his father's blessings.

Its just not film songs that count. Did anybody see Ullasm? The re-recording was brilliant. In my opinion the true class of a musician comes out only in the re-recording of a movie.Have you heard "Thendral vandhu thoongum" from avatharam? I beleive that the music was done by Karthik Raja. How is that for some talent ?

The songs in Ullasam were good.Especially 'Cholaray' which had some spanish music in its interlude. Besides the music of 'Thendral Vandhu' in Avataaram and 'Pandiyanin Raajiyathil' in Pandiyan were composed by him. I guess as more of his films release we''l get to see more stuff, may be not as good as his Father but certainly something original and melodious.

correction. the interlude music and the bgm for the song were composed by karthik raaja. he said this himself in an interview in SUN TV. He is supposedly have happened to be inspired by the music of flowing water and that is why the song has a hush-sound thruout and prominent electonic bass. both avataaram and pandiyan carried Ilaiyaraaja's name but there are quite a few movies like 'Amaidhee Padai' (which has IR's name ) but a popular bgm in it was composed by karthik raaja

let me add quickly that although these songs with some contribution from KR are very good, i feel he still has along way to go if he has to reach IRs level and standard.

Karthik Raja is young and I don't know his level of knowledge in carnatic ragas. Tunes are more important than interludes or re-recording. That's why MSV was so popular. Ilayaraja is a genius. He has unbelievable talent and knowledge in music. Karthik doesn't have to be a genius but should definitely have adequate knowledge in classical music like his father. I think that's what he has to improve. My openion may be wrong but if he is good at classical music, he should have no problem is producing various tunes. In ullasam and his other movies, music was excellent but songs were not upto the mark. I would expect Karthik to compare his songs with Ilayaraja's 'Nizhalgal' and 'Ninaivellam Nithya' and so on (It's so sad that even Ilayaraja is not creating those kind of tunes these days). Then he will know where he has to improve.
Karthik has a long way to go. He certainly has talent. But he has to work with good directors like Balachandar, mahendran and Sridhar who have good music taste. They know how to get the best out of him.

Karthik Raja has made his debut in Hindi movies with Grahaan a Jackie Shroff production. It has been given a good rating.I think Guy has some stuff and cannot be written off easily.I also guess the downslide of ARR has already begun. He's composing for Kadhala Kadhala ,a Kamal Prabhu Deva starrer.

Grahaan songs are indeed great! I thought that Ullasam songs were pretty good, too. If Ullasam songs had a Rahman touch, then Grahan has a lot of IR influence. Looking back at his previous(few) compositions, it seems like he is definitely trying to find something new, or at least a bit different. Quite promising, to say the least. I'm sure he will make an impact on TFM soon.

KarthikRaja has been in the field for about 2 years. I feel we have to wait for some more time to decide the quantum of his talents. His minus point is that he is the son of Ilayaraja. We can never expect the quality of Raja from Karthik. He should be viewed as an independent entity.
As far as Manickam is concerned, he scored very good songs. Particularly "sundarane" and "thoodh sel oru poonguyile". Unfortunately both songs were cut from the film during editing. Background music was very good. But definitely he is not at his best after Manickam except some selected songs from few films.
Also Tamil Music is at its worst today producing hardly 10 to 15 hit songs an year. Only after this turbulance ends, we can predict any music director's quality. Today's music heavily relies on Advertisement, Banner(Producer), Money spent over the song in the film, success of film. If a song can get 3 out of these 4 there is a big possiblity that the song may become hit. But today's statistics reveal that only 5 to 8 films cross 100 days and around 5 more films get the money back. Others fail. In the last decade even films became utter flop, good songs were recognised by people. e.g
Nizhalgal
Kaadal Ovium
Ninaivellam Nithya
Nadodi Thendral
Pagalnilavu
Michel madana Kamarajan
Singaravelan
sathya
unnal mudium thambi
etc......
Bit today the chances for a song from failure film to become popular is least. Many a times they never reach people at all.
So unless Karthik Raja gets Nobel producers or directors or actors, it is very difficult for him to prove himself.

Karthik Raja is improving. But it seems the Maestro himself is in his full form with fantastic & melodious compositions for KATHALUKKU MARIYADHAI.Karthik's music for Naam Iruvar Namakku Iruvar was released recently and it is passable.Everybody is eagerly awaiting his music for Kamal Hassan's new movie KADHALA KADHALA scheduled soon. Let us hope for the best from the Maestro's family.

i don't know, why everyone is calling songs with synthesizer beats as Rahmannish(it is called popular music not rahman music)? after listening to some rock albums, don't complain it sounds too guitarish!!!!!!! rahman was easily recognized bcoz of his quality recording and his much famed synthesizers... kathik being from the new breed of composers may use similar beats, this doesn't mean the song is a remake. the dilama why karthik couldn't stand out it is difficult for anyone to break grounds that are already broken. some people disdain some songs, by grouping it under song for the masses; when a composer creates music, his aim should be to reach as many people possible. don't forget economics; there is something called profit too... in the film or music industry. given time to mature, karthik will become better; don't forget he is still young. one other reminder if one doesnot have real knowledge, he is history after two hits. look at western popular music histroy.... so it does prove karthik has some real knowledge.
i liked his new album nam iruvar namaku iruver

I really enjoyed all the songs from the movie 'Ullasam'. It was simply marvellous. I am greatly astonished that Mr Karthik raja is not following his father's style. I feel happy for him. They are really a family full musical talents.

KAARTHIK RAAJA HASN'T CREATED ANY MUSIC THAT WILL SOUND WAH-WAH.IN FACT HIS MUSIC IN KADHALA-KADHALA
SUCKS.MAYBE IF A R REHMAN HAD COMPOSED THE MUSIC FOR KADHALA-KADHALA IT WOULD HAVE DONE SOME JUSTICE TO THE MOVIE.I AGREE WITH SHARON ANNE THAT AR REHMAN CANNOT BE COMPARED TO KAARTHIK RAAJA AS AR REHMAN IS HIS SENIOR AND HAS ESTABLISHED HIMSELF WITH GREAT SONGS FROM MOVIES LIKE INDIAN ,
BOMBAY, KAADHALAN, RATCHAKAN,MINSARA KANAVU...
TO NAME A FEW.
