Folks,
Like to discuss about in which among the following, IR stands apart :
1) Folk songs
2) Carnatic based songs
3) Western music based songs
4) Dappangkuthu songs
5) Rap songs
IMO, I would say the folk songs of IR are outstanding.

dear SM,
IR is great at all types of songs.oru panai sotrukku oru soru patham mathiri i will give an example of each type
folk:- thuppaki kaiyileduthu
carnatic :- thalayai kuniyum thamaraiye
western :- pesa kudathu
dappanguthu :- aiyya voodu
rap :- i cant remember any rap composed by IR
so ultimately speaking he is a genius with all kinds of songs and iwould not limit his genius to any one particular kind

IMO,even other mds like MSV, KVM,Deva, etc have given some good dappanguthu ,folk and carnatic based songs. But none of them are comparable to Raja in giving indianised WC.
For a layman like me who can't understand the intricacies of WC compositions of J S Bach or Mozart, Raja and paul mauriat were guides who gave WC in a way which everybody cud appreciate.
Though Raja didn't give a full fledged WC composition,he's tried to fit WC wherever it makes sense.
I think nobody can match IR except himself in this.

Srinath,
Of course, IR is a genius in all types of songs. No doubt about that. But, I feel that when I think of IR the songs that spring to my mind immediately is his "manvaasanai" ulla songs, like
All the songs in "Manvaasanai", especially, "pothi vacha malligai mottu"
All the songs in "Mudhal Mariyaadhai" and "Pudhiya Vaarpugal"
Songs like 'rasaathi unnai kaanaadha nenju" and "kaathirundhu kaathirundhu" in "Vaidhehi Kaathirundhaal"
"maanguyilae... poonguyilae" in "Karagaattakkaaran"
Songs in films like "Mullum Malarum" and "Udhirippookkal"
and so many.
and so many. IR ALONE can give such wonderful music to village based movies. How about the songs in the film "En Raasavin Manasilae" and "Naattuppura paattu"? Before and after that the director of that film, Kasthuri Raja has given so many films. But I don't remember the songs in those movies and all. (Of course, I didn't like the songs in "Veerath Thaalaattu" much, even if the MD was IR). I don't even remember the songs in the movie "Ettuppatti Raasa" and one Suganya starrer (I don't even remember the name of the movie).
Take the case of "Thevar Magan". I like the prelude and the interludes of the song (and the song itself), "potri paadadi ponnae" more than the even bigger hit in the same film "inji iduppazhagaa". I don't know why, but I feel the former has more nativity in it.
In some cases, I don't remember the name of the film but I remember the song very well. Like "andha kanji kalayathai vanji sumakkayilae" in a film starring Karthik and Soundharya. It was released after "Ponnumani" which had a great song "nenjukkullae innaarunnu sonnal theriyumaa".
Of course, IR's western and classical songs are great and are second to none. But, I still feel that whenever I hear his village based tunes, I get more emotional. It takes me a while to get relaxed.
I am sure IR was the greatest reason for all those village based movies becoming mega hits. Can you imagine "Thevar Magan", Manvaasanai", "Mudhal Mariyaadhai" or "Mullum Malarum" without IR?
Ravi,
Yes. There is a rap song in the movie "Nandhavana Theru". I don't remember the lyrics of that song exactly, anyway.

PS,
That's a good idea. With that, people like me, who are not aware of the various musical facets can come to know about them. As you know, IR's music contains all the facets that go to make his music great. As Srinath earlier pointed out in one of his threads, "IR HAS TOUCHED AND HAS MASTERED ALL THE DIMENSIONS IN MUSIC".

hey guys,
as SM pointed out ir is indeed great with folk songs but i still feel that it is not proper to limit his potential to any one type of music.the musicof ilayaraja is well suited in differnt circumstances .for example take the case of ilayaraja in" anandhakummi" which has alot of great songs like "oh vennilave" "thamarai kodi"
"margazhi parvai". take the case of the song " putham puthu kalai " in alaigal oyivathillai , though the song did not appear in the film ,antha patta ketta nejamave putham puthu kalaikke poyiduvom. similar songs are "sandhana kattre"
"isai medaiyil" "pesa kudathu" "then poove poove" "mella mella yennai thottu" " en iniya pon nilave " and many more. certain songs like " eniniya pon nilave" can kindle the romance even inside a sidumoonji. so i still feel that the potential of the one and only inimitable IR should not be limited to any one dimension of music. he is a genius and a legend and we should be proud to be living in the same era he is living in.

If I have to classify and IR's musical genre I would give the 'man vaasanai' songs the first rank. I think this is what made him to be loved fanatically by the tamil crowd.
Blending Indian+WC is another forte. The lack of knowledge of WC among our people has constrained him from exploring this genre to his maximum potential, I feel.
I feel he himself should have taken the effort to popularise WC but we are from a country where the people are not even aware that much of their own classical music. So I guess he was too handicapped by the socio-economic situation. If at all I have the opportunity to meet him I will surely bring this up.
