I rate Vairamuthu somewhere in between Kannadasan and Vaali. He is more closer to Vaali than to Kannadasan.
The only thing I take offense is that of his assuming the title of Kavi Perarasu, which seemingly puts him on top of Kavi Arasu Kannadasan.

Hi guys
Pls compare Kannadasan with Vali, I can take it.
But not with Vairamuthu. This is too much.
Kannadasan's songs are immortal and streets ahead in quality when compared to guys like VM. Kannadasan occupies 1-10 positions when we list
alltime greats, then come people like Vali, Marudakasi, Ka Mu Sherif, Panchu Arunachalam, Alangudi Somu, P.Kalyanasundaram etc. I might have
left a few others, but i dont think VM will even fit into this elite company. Kannadasan is unique because he was able to write, not one or two songs, but 8 to 10 songs in a single film and all
of them were poetic, not dialogues formed into a song like poets of present generation. These
songs had lots of relevance to the film, which
is totally missing nowadays.
Imagine, Kannadasan was able to outshine a guy like Vali, who was very talented and has given innumerable hit songs particularly for MGR. That was really a healthy competition.
Kannadasan is Kannadasan, the incomparable of them all. If VM can be called as Kaviperarasu,
the Kannadasan should be the god of Tamil song
lyrics.

Regarding the titles:
Thiruvalluvar got "Theyva pulavar"
Kamban got "Kavi Chakravarthy"
Bharathi got "Maha Kavi"
Bharathidhasan got "Puratchi Kavi"
Kannadhasan got "Kaviyarasu"
When people wanted to praise VM they gave him the same title "Kaviyarasu". But people objected VM to have that. VM himself asked not to use that title. But his fans came up with "Kaviperarasu".People ask when he is not 'Kaviyarasu', how can he be 'Kaviperarasu'?. He may be the best when compared to the other poets this generation, but the title offered should be matching, meaningful and comparable to the titles of earlier poets. Isn't it? Meaningwise 'Kaviperarasu' and 'Kavi Chakravarthi' are the same. Can one compare VM with immortal 'Kamban'?
VM's fans can't think another suitable title for him? If VM's fans are good in Tamil, they can give him another good title.

Using vulgar languages to defame people,
is not the right way to approach a discussion i think.
i just like to present my view here.
VM is better than KD in so many ways.
KD and VM worked together only for 2 years.
When VM came to TFM, his 'pon maalai pozhudhu' was the song in
demand in All Radio music programs.
KD must not died so early.
he must have lived to fight with VM.
had he done that everyone wud have accepted VM is better.
choose any topic,
VM had penned better lyrics in that topic than KD.
high degree of poetry,
deep level of philosophy,
pure commercial thinking,
ultimate simplicity,
enjoyable folk,
you cant say a place where KD had wrote better lyrics.
' otha thuliyila
otha thuliyula
oru latcham oru koadi
usuru irukkudhu.
athana thuliyayum
adichu thorathitu
otha thuli otha thuli
karuvil valarudhu '
in gemini,
just explained the concept of competition in life,
even before birth. it was that apt a message, it was that apt
for that movie.
' aathigam paesum adiyaarkkellam
sivamae anbaagum
naathigam paesum nallavarukkoa
anbae sivamaagum '
the whole concept of a 3 hr movie in 2 lines.
' puratchigal edhum seyyaamal
pennukku nanmai vilayaadhu
kannagi silaidhaan ingundu
seedhaikku kallaal silai edhu ? '
you know where these lines were framed,
in a so called junk song oorvasi oorvasi.
' en uyir poagum poanaalum
thuyarillai pennae
adharkkaagavaa paadinaen
varum varungaalam un meedhu
pazhipoadum pennae
adharkkaagathaan vaadinaen '
i know people who hate this song because it kindles all their
burried feelings.
' thaayendra orudheivam
veetoada irukku
nee thanithaniyaa
koavil kulam
alaivadhuvum edhukku
ammaavin paadhathil
karpooram koluthu
varum aanandha kanneeril
abishegam nadathu '
what vaali tried to say in a full length song
is stuffed in to the tune in mere 3 lines.
' azhagu enbadhu aanpaalaa penpaalaa
enbadhil enakku sandhegam theerndhadhu
azhagu enbadhu nichayam penpaaladaa.
kavidhai enbadhu mozhiyin vadivam
enroru karuthum inru udaindhadhu
kavidhai enbadhu kanni vadivamadaa '
from shajahan, is the best song describing a girl.
' konjam iru nenju poru
thaavani visirigal veesugiraen
manmadha ambugal thaitha idangalil
sandhanamaai enai poosugiraen '
was a perfect example where he fits words so perfectly in to a
complex tune.
kannadasan wrote a handful of songs to music directors tunes.
vairamuthu wrote a handful of songs that were tuned.
' sila aarugal meerudhadaa
varalaarugal maarudhadaa
pasiyaal pala ezhaigal saavadhu enbadhu
dhesiyamaanadhadaa.
ini thaen varum enbadhum paalvarum enbadhum
joasiyamaanadhadaa,
ada saataigalae ini theervugal enbadhu
soosagamaanadhadaa '
from 'manidhaa manidhaa' was an ultimate example of human
outburst in the form of literature.
' idhayam thudippadhu nindraalum
irandoar nimidam uyir irukkum
anbae enai nee neenginaal
oruganam en uyir thaangaadhu '
from jeans is a perfect blend of romance and science like
' paruvangal sandhithaal
piriondru undaagum
dhuruvangal sandhithaal
piriyaadhu ennaalum '
from iruvar.
how else could a girls feelings can be expressed like in
snegidhanae.
just learn how many divorced couples have cried listening to
'anbe sugamaa' from paarthaalae paravasam.
' undhan kaattil sugamaa
en otrai thaliyanai sugamaa'
and
' veliyae azhthaal vetkam endru
vilakkai anaithu azudhaen'
cant come from an ordinary pen.
i'll stop here.
kannadasan has write equal number of 'kattipidaas' and
'jumbalakkaas'
kannadasan has written more double meaning songs even when they are not necessary.
kannadasan is still appreciated for onething.
making his idea's simple.
expressing in simple meaning directly.
but even today one of the proliferated group of lyric writers can write lines like kannadasan even better at times.
the only thing was kannadasan never faced a good competition.
all he had in front was Mr.Vaalee.
I wont blame kannadasan for being so.
its time.
most of the time he was not in his senses.
he never preached anything bad but
researchers have shown how many of the poets started consuming alcohol just to imitate kannadasan.
kamalhaasan once said in a stage,
' i was lucky enough to have sivaji
to accept me as a good actor
but vairamuthu is unlucky,
kannadasan died early. '
kamal sometimes speaks sensibly.
this was one such a speech.
Shivaji in a singapore stage said VM has excelled KD,
which created so many controversies.
that led to VM announce that he deticates his 'kaviyarasu' title, which was confered to him by the same organization that confered the title to kannadasan, to kannadasan itself.
He was confered 'kaviperarasu' by the chief minister of tamil nadu and the considered living legend of tamil literature mr. karunanidhi.
and people now fighting that kaviperarasu sounds superior to kaviyarasu and VM must not use it.
not in one of his literary books VM put any title in front of his name.
these titles are just used by the film industry.
VM is someone beyond these titles.
'ilaya thalapathy' vijay changes to 'puratch thalapathy' vijay for his next movie. its just like that.
no one wants anything.
so there is no point in fighting for other's titles.
i just felt this view of mine wud suit both the threads so posting it in both of them which are almost similar.

Hi Nandini (or whoever it may be)
Either you must not have been aware of what Kannadasan has done or you must be totally biased
towards VM. Hence you have conveniently said that
VM is better than Kannadasan. Or else you do not
belong to the generation when Kannadasan was ruling the roost. You people are happy with songs
like ponmalai pozhudu, uyire uyire etc which are just average when compared to songs of Kannadasan.
You have spoken about derogatory terms being used,
then why are you complaining about Kannadasan was not in his senses. This is very ironical.
And if you think, Kannadasan was not good in fitting words into tunes, you are sadly mistaken
again, Kannadasan was an expert in that too.
And lastly, you have said that there are so many
people now who can write like Kannadasan and even
better him. This is nothing but comical.
If you want to know what Kannadasan has done, pls
listen to the songs from the following films.
1.Paasamalar
2.Paavamanippu
3.Parthal pasi theerum
4.Paalum Pazhamum
5.Par magale par
6.Andavan Kattalai
7.Aalayamani
8.Pudhiya paravai
9.Kumkumam
10.Iruvar ullam
Have u listened to songs like
1. Athi kai kai kai, alan kai
2. Kalangalil aval vasantham
3. Parthen sirithen
4. Endha oor endravale
5. Mayakkama, kalakkama
These films and songs are only small sample of
that great poet, he has done much more than anybody could have dreamt of doing. Only thing
was during those days there was not enough exposure and publicity. Even VM will admit that
Kannadasan is much greater than him and I have
listened to his interviews abt Kannadasan, he has
himself admitted that Kannadasan was his inspiration.
Even in VM's wildest dreams he would not have imagined that there would be a supporter like you
for him.
If Kannadasan had been here, VM would have been
nowhere. He would have been submerged in the
poetry of Kannadasan.
I would like to ask you how many songs has VM
written in tamil, very few, that is in comparison
to what Kannadasan has done. Dont please say that
VM is doing this bcose of commercial compulsions,
as if Kannadasan produced all the films for which
he penned the songs. All the producers were and are commercially motivated only. So that is not an
excuse. It is only paucity of talent and imagination on part of VM that he had to borrow
English words. And mind you, Kannadasan did not get all this fame and popularity for a single film. He was ruling the industry for so many years. And he was never a poet who will bend to
the whims and fancies of actors, directors, producers etc and change his lyrics, he stuck to his guns.
For your information, VM's wife is better poet than VM. Only thing is that, it has not been exposed.
So please think before you pen something.
