Every one I think agree that the quality in Tamil lyrics is deteriorating. Does the western music influence like pop, rock, etc., is making lyricist work difficult?
Is computerised music making lyricist to write songs sounding algorithmic?( Examples given in many other threads)
Are VM,PB etc., are forced to use TENGLISH (Tamil + English Instead of Tamil) and other languages to fit in tune given to them?
Because the same lyricist gave good lyrics before. Any body have some opinion on this?

No Doubt the lyrics of TFM have gone down.Every lyricist from Vairamuthu to pallanibharathi contributing to this sorry plight.I recently read an interview of vairamuthu where when asked this Q he replied that the lyricist have to change with time.He came up with the platonic arguement that Thyagarajar wrote about bakthi.Bharathi based most of his songs on freedom struggle and so he and his contemporaries have to coin tenglish words to reflect the present trend of the society.I totally agree that we have to be adept with the technological changes but nevertheless not loose our roots. The fact that these people spoil the language and also earn accolades for their work is deplorable.Mass media being a very strong tool needs good leaders so that nice things about society/romance/nature reach the people.
Another major factor is the use of really mean words in lyrics.Valli is notorious for this and i wonder how he can face a women after that.Cinema should be used to portray every human act in its sublime form.
These are my personal views and am not sure how many of you would agree with me in this respect.

AP: what you say is true. but the general justification is what ramakrishna pointed out. when we are using western music, pop, rock etc, it probably forces the lyricists also to write in these ways. otherwise it might look like a man wearing jeans pant and kadhar shirt!! traditional ways of writing lyrics are being changed whether we like it or not. i personally feel that the music and lyrics should be complimentary to each other. otherwise we can have rock and pop tunes, and the hero singing "kayalvizhiye, un kArvarNak koondhalil....", looks awfully out of place. so i think the only way of improvement is to reduce amount of english in lyrics and settle for commonly used words rather than poetry of yesteryears.

I agree with VM that a lyricist has to change with time.True, but he should know to put his view across, clearly. For instance take VM's line "vEgamai sellu floppy disk avaL, nenjai aLLum Dolby sound avaL".
I'm sure VM doesn't know the difference between a flying disk (a frisbee to UFO) and a floppy!! I guess he wanted to write flying disk. Why venturing something u know nothing about???
I have more thoughts about VM's usage of tech jargons but then ,people will stamp me as a HCVM Basher!!
I admire his imagination but certainly not his GK.

UV,
pl. continue. if u want i can start a separate thread 'exposing vairamuthu'. i can also give a link to ramesh mahadevan's article 'an algorhythmic approach to writing lyrics" in which he has made a satire of VM. these guys don't deserve to call themselves poets.

Guys,
What I feel is, some of the directors and lyricists feel that only "Tenglish" songs sell well. Thus some of the directors force the lyricists to write songs having english words and don't give them the full freedom. Earlier a song actually meant both the tune and the lyrics for people. Now-a-days people are impressed only with the tune and seldom by the lyrics. Also, at the rate of production of movies, it really calls for some enthusiasm and effort on part of the lyricist to write lyrics in good tamil. Both Vairamuthu and Vaali are potentially good writers, but I guess that they try to be on par with the younger generation.

using english words in a tamil song is not wrong if the situation demands it. for example in nadodi thendral when an english woman sings, u can't write lyrics in senthamizh for that kind of situation.
but using english words unncessarily like 'telephone mani pol', 'dolby system', 'alps malai kaatru' is not required. just because this is computer age u should nou unncessarily force english words in duets.
even in this age a rustic song like 'thendral vandhu theendum' with tamillyrics is being appreciated. many people have also appreciated narumugaiye which is in senthamizh. so use of english words is not necessary for commercial success nor does it always add beauty to the song lyrics.

Vijay
I found Ramesh Mahadevan's article by myself, browsing thru archives.
Just ignore my previous posting.
I was talking to my friend on this thread and I was really suprised to hear what he told on this.
As per him He had a friend who wanted to invite a film lyricist for a funtion in his college as a cheif guest. They couldnot get his consent to preside over the function as that guy was busy. But later he was discussing with those people who wanted to invited him about the possibilty of devoloping a software which could give him all words that would fit for a given input of tune. He would pick up the best combination of words and make them as a song. He seems to be telling that now adays it is being difficult for them to write lyrics for the tunes what they are getting.
I think if the above is true by any chance then what I think it is very bad for TFM.
