Tamizh Ini Mella Chaagum????
Gone are the days when play back singers took pains to render the lyrics to perfect pronunciation.
It's appalling to see the way some new artists are KILLING Tamil words.
ARR is himself pretty bad in correct rendering of words..
Suresh Peters tops the list, ofcourse.
And what's alarming is even reputed classical singers like Unni Krishnan have mispronounced many words in Jeans.
For instance, most of them can't differenciate between
1. Palli (as in school) and Palli (as in Lizard).
2. Manam (Mind, Heart) and Manam (Smell).
(Actors Prabhu and Nassar have the same problem too.)
Listen to the so called hilight of Iruvar, the rendering of some verses by Arvind Swamy...
its amazing how Vairamuthu and Mani Ratnam allowed this massacre....

i am surprised that listeners are able to hear the words clearly in the first place in order to make remarks on the pronounciation. i was asked to sing narumugaiye in a function in bahrain and i had to listen to the song n times (n >20) to get a hang. it was not just me. the one who was to sing bombay jayasri's words was even more confused. we compared notes and used our own sense and recreated some portions. this is not an isolated instance.
on the lighter vein, we have been pampered by TMS and Seerkazhi that we look for proper ucharippu from everybody.
i don't think only rahman is guilty of this. look at deva. nalam nalamariya aaval was not decipherable in the first few occassions. is the problem with the singers or with the MDs? a million $ question. i also feel that the listening public is also to blame for not castigating such songs and their creators.

another disturbing trend in ARR's songs is the excessive use of english words and this is continuing even in jeans.previously english words were used only if the situation demanded that,or perhaps for comedy purposes.but nowdays the lyrics are becoming increasingly pathetic with some of the words used being 'love attack',software, hardware, alps, etc.perhaps the lyricists are pressurized into writing such lyrics for ARR because of the fact that his music appeals mostly to youngsters and also due to the heavy influence of western music in his songs.
as long as his songs continue to strike a chord with the younger audience ARR is never going to wake up.But i feel that the audience would soon be fed up with this kind of music and we would soon see the kind of music style that was popular in the 80's and that the change in the music style would force the lyicists to change their style.

The trend of English words is just a wave that began with "Mukkaala Muqabla" where Western pop culture items like Jurassic Park, Jazz Music, etc were mentioned. Vaali has been notorious for this ever since the old days, but he is more prolific with Pop culture name-dropping of late and with him Palani Bharathi, and Vairamuthu have joined in on the assault. In the old days every LR Eshwari song sung for CID Sagunthala and the likes used to have a few Western terms thrown in. Remember the Usha Uthup phase?
Other God awful songs of old like:
Uravinil fifty fifty
Love is fine darling when you're mine
Swing swing unathu oonjal naan
and the many songs where SPB screamed Hi baby, or sweetheart, or Sinorita. And the thousands of songs that have the words I love you.
Songwriters should be blamed first, next the producers who ask for such marketable songs, next the MDs and lastly the singers.
About mispronuciation, remeber KJY's early Tamil songs?
"Therukovilae oadi vaa" and the many songs where he couldn't get the "la" and "lzha" sounds correct?
Of the new singers, I think Unni Krishnan is the best in pronunciation, Hari is still in his mazhalai Tamil, Suresh Peters. . .hmm, Udit Narayan should be disbarred from Tamil Nadu altogether or sentenced to reading Thirukural for three hours everyday. In the old days, AM Raja and PBS killed a few songs before they straightened out.Like Billy Joel sang, "We didn't start the fire, it's been burning burning since the wheels were turning."

Udhaya,
Thanks for the oldies with an English dressing...
"Love is fine darling when you're mine..." Ouch.. which film is it by the way?
I agree, Unni Krishnan has good diction, but I think the lyrisists are to blame for not correcting his wrong renderings at times (Like in Jeans...)
Interestingly, Sonu Nigam (he is finally getting his due in Hindi films; has a great voice, a la M.Rafi) has done a decent job in rendering the song Vaarayo Thozhi in Jeans.
To comment on the mindless English phrases,
the Telephone Mani song from Indian and Strawberry Kanne song from Minsara Kanavu when dubbed in Hindi were criticised by the media (the Madrasi invasion -a la PT exercises in the 80s songs- as some chose to call it). ....As if every song coming out from there is an absolute gem)
Nevertheless it is an alarming trend, I feel.

The Hindi film world and DD have no moral standing
to criticise these songs. As mentioned in another
thread, has DD not massacred English with its unpalatable mixture of Hindi and English?
And we are all quite familiar with Hindi songs with English words.
I can feel physically nauseous when I think of the
compere ( Deepak Vohra, was it? ) on morning telly
going : And now, aapke liye hum pesh karte hain...
blah...blah...
So, perhaps DD is to blame for this scourge!!
Aur hum chalte hain Mandi House to listen to their views.

Thanks to ARR in one sense that he's adventerous
in experimenting with a wide range of singers, which is also a healthy trend. However the
rendition of some of the songs are pathetic. For
example the song "SONIA" rendered by Udit,is like
ridiculing a Tamil song in my opinion. The earlier
"CHIKU-PUKU RAILU" rendered by Suresh Peters although anglicized was well within norms and became a roaring hit! ARR should ensure that his
brilliant compositions shouldnt be marred when the
renditions go overboard in an attempt to anglicize!

Gomez, you must be new around here because you are making carefree proclamations about ARR. As I'm writing this I know that a lynch mob is taking aim at you for saying, "ARR. . .brilliant compositions". ARR enthusiasts need to tread softly and carry enough artillery to withstand the attacks that come roaring from all fronts. Good luck friend, be warned. I'll see you in more logical discussions elsewhere later. I'm getting out of here, I've been here and done this. It's your turn.

Jeevanesan Gomez:
Welcome to TFM DF.. :))
Dont worry about getting hammered by IR die-hards. Say whatever you want about ARR, try to keep IR out of the picture as far as possible. That's the way to survive here!
There are many in TFM DF who like ARR and this is a free for all forum, where opinions have to differ and will differ.

Thanks Srikanth and Udaya for placing things in
proper perspective. This forum is for Tamizh Film
Music and not for IR's music alone. :)
