I too read somewhere that music for all Balu Mahendra's movies were scored by IR. But wasn't 'azhiyaadha kOlangaL' a BM movie? Wasn't music scored by Salil Choudhary? Clarifications please.

To Ravi :
Azhiyaadha Kolangal was directed by BM and the music was by Salil Choudhry. (one of my favourite movies).
Anyway my vote goes to BR-IR combination. Not that other combinations are bad. I enjoyed all songs from Pudhiya paravai and the pa-varisai padangal (Paava mannippu, Paarthal pasi theerum, paalum pazhamum) but IMO IR's music for BR's films is special. The music accentuate BR's films in a way that no other combo matches. In spite of the fact that IR won two of his national awards with KB, I feel that his scores for Sindhu Bhairavi and UMThambi were lacking in feeling - more of technical wizardry than of soul.
Compare to
16 Vayathinile - folk music at its best keeping with the tone of the film
Sigappu Rojakkal - mysterious, dark-toned music reflecting the suspenseful, sinister plot of the movie
Nizhalgal (contains two of IR's all-time best songs - Pon Maalai pozhudhu and Poonkadhave Thaazh thiravaai)
Niram Maaraadha Pookal - romantic, fun music
Pudhiya Vaarpugal - nothing special about the combo (except for the fabulous - Thamthana thamthana)
Alaigal Oyvathillai - great music for adolescent infatuation. Lyrics were also great.
Tik Tik Tik - a thriller movie and the music - what you can call techno-fusion. superb !
And the list goes on
Mann Vaasanai
Pudhumai Penn
- ! My god I forgot the movie of the song Sangeetha Jaadhi Mullai !! (Radha & Kannan)
Mudhal Mariyaadhai
IMO Mudhal Mariyaadhai was the last of the great BR-IR combo movies. In spite of the fact Kadalora Kavithaigal had great music it wasn't as good as the previous ones.
Similarly BR-IR movies after they split and rejoined - Naadodi Thendral and En Uyirth Thozhan had great music but something was missing.

Thank you for voting for me--it goes to show that we've all become one great TFM family with no secrets. But, if allowed a split I'd say 90% to Bheemsingh--TKR/MSV and 10% to BR--IR's early works!!
- From: Ravi (@ greed.cs.umass.edu)
on: Tue Aug 12 13:35:20 EDT 1997
Regarding BR-IR music after the split... IR's music from that period lacked something. It was not a function of BR-IR combo. It could be because IR had become disenchanted with film music by then and wasn't putting everything into it.
I agree with the observation that BR-IR movies give us great BGM too. Music was an essential part of BR's movies and nobody delivered it like IR. IMO ARR's BGM for BR's movies (for that matter any movie) is not all that satisfactory. Reg. earlier Combos.. hey who had heard of BGM in earlier days? :)

This again is one of the movies in which all the songs are not only listenable but great. Some one was lamenting in another thread such movies are non-existent in the 80s. Well here is one counterexample.

Ellorum IR-BR combination parri ore porrudhaldhan. Anal KB - MSV combination pattri oru varithai kooda yarrum sollaville.
If you take a casual walk in their combination, you can find that their combination is very good.
In the 1970's all their films have very powerful scenes and defintely the songs helped the films in a great way. But it you take IR - BR films, except kadhal oviyyam, alaigal oiyvadhuillai, to some extent muthal mariyadhi, all other films songs are just fillers. But that is not case with
KB - MSV combintaion.
1. approva ragangal - who can forget ellhu swargal and adisya ragam
2. aval oru thodar kathai - kaduval ammithu, dhivam thanda veedu
3. Avargal - Iru manam, angum ingum, karrukena vali.
4. Songs in films manmatha leeli, pattina pravasam ( vaa nila), nool veli, sollathan ninekeran, nilla nijam agirathu, naan avanillai,
and the great ninathale innikum upto agni satchi. I bet all these songs have different situations and all the songs have great lyrics, good singing and great music.
It is a very tempting combination and they
are definetely as good as IR - BR combination, if not better. BTW KB was the only director who used MSV, when others are busy waiting for IR.

msv/kb combo gave us great music, no doubt! Infact, there was something quite different from MSVs music in the movies from KBs direction namely Thillu Mullu and Agnisaatchi. The two songs that haunt me even now are "Raagangal Padhinaaru" and "Kanaakkaanum" respectively. The later one needs mention for its picturization. And needless to say the way spb stole the show with his voice! Hats off Mellisai Manna!!
I have a problem accepting this guy called KB who thrives on pervert subjects (sorry, a different track, but unable to resist, and, for that matter there are enuf directors!!)and thats the reason, i was not able to enjoy his films, much. Nevertheless, the music was good. If we call Sivaji's histrionics "over-acting" sometimes, KB's direction was "over-directing" sometimes, nay, most of the times. (Sorry for that deviation!!)

To gopal and satya kirthi,
nanri. Neengal sonnadhu pool, MSV music for
KB films is different from his other songs. His songs in KB films is much smoother ( not any
big chord changes), may be KB demanded it from MSV. Bcos, VKumar who previously scored
for KB, always scored very smooth songs. In this period, MSV started using more of guitar, violin and piano. Also he started using new type of orchestration, where he starts some music in the first interlude and stop it partially
and develop it further in third interlude. Songs like kadaual ammathi vaitha, kamban ammandhan, illakanaum marutho, he followed this style. Did any one remembers songs in the
film manmatha leelai and naan avanillai ( gemeni's last film as hero/villan). It has some very nice songs, one starts something like
radha, radha. kanakanum in agnichatchi is a beautiful song, but influenced by IR music at that time to some extent. That was the last MSV film for a big direcotr, though he came out some good songs in the films janani, nillavum malare and others, later.

To all,
If you are a fan of a MD other than IR, let me explain you why IR stays ahead of rest by billions of miles.
If you take music of directors before IR, they hardly had the credit for their music. Their songs had the tag like MGR song, SIVAJI song, SSR's Thaththuva Songs, KB's songs and so on. They did not have their stamp on their songs.
Ilayaraja is the man who proved that a music director can take the entire film on his shoulders. Films advertised with his name and having trivial artists went for 200 days. It is obvious looking at the calibre of the following actors.
Mohan : Payanangal Mudivathillai
Ilamai kaalangal
Nan paadum paadal
Udayageetham
Ramarajan: Enga OOru kavalkaran
Karagattakaran
Rajkiran : En Raasavin Manasile
AranmanaiKili
Ellaame en Raasathan
Vijaykanth : Vaideki kathirunthal
Amman koil kilakkale
Ninaive Oru Sangeetham
(Vijaykanth gained individuality only after these films)
These are the list of Directors who were identified by people by virtue of Ilayaraja. People may curse me that these directors have individuality. But in the absence of IR's music all of these people would have gone null and void.
Barathiraja (Can you imagine his films without IR)
Mahendran
Balumahendra
Balachandar(From Sindhu Bairavi - IR gave him a come back)
Mani Rathnam ( Heavily begged for IR's music for his career enhancement)
R.V.Udayakumar ( His only strength is IR)
R.K.Selvamani
P.Vasu ( Still he beleives he played the key roll in thesuccess of SINNA THAMBI, poor guy)
Also if you notice, You can observe that IR is the only person who can take a better credit in a Super Star film than Rajini himself, e.g. VEERA, the sole reason Rajini is worrying and hesitating to utilise IR's services.
If you ask me to list the rest it may take a few weeks long.
Ilayaraja stays ahead in any department of music such as
Duets(kanmaniye!!!!!!)
Pathos(Thenpandi seemaiyile)
Dappanguthus(Podhuvaga en manasu)
Background Music(almost all, particularly Mudal Mariathai, a directors's envy)
Albums (how to name it)
Rithms ( I like to quote AAttama!!, Asaiya Kaththula)
Instrument oriented songs ( punnagai mannan,
Ilayanila...)
Bit songs (Mudal Mariathai, Devar magan, Sinna Goundar)
Sexy songs!!!(Nila kayuthu!!! Even Ilayaraja cannot beat this song with another of the kind)
Songs for overseas shooting (Priya.....)
Devotional ( Janani Janani....)
casual ( Meenkodi Theril - A miracle composing)
Etc etc.........
