Hey Thomas
The latest news about Chitra.
She is well known for picking up songs quickly in recordings. Actually, people say it is amazing how quickly SPB and Chitra pick up a song. They ask the track singer to sing once and then they are ready to sing. Nowadays, it takes singers about half an hour to sing a song. Usually. But SPB and Chitra finish it in ten minutes and then they are out of that place.
Recently Chitra went to sing for L. Subramaniam, an carnatic musician and MD for Kamal's "Hey Ram". She had gone thinking that it would take about 1/2 an hour to finish the recording. But the recording took 10 hrs!!!
This is from the recent KUMUDAM magazine. Of course, I am not sure how true it is, but I can't wait to hear the song on audio!

And that's the reason I think why songs of 'nowadays' linger only that much longer!

Of course, I am not saying it is a healthy trend by posting that message. But the truth is that the outcome of a song is up to the MD. SPB and Chitra seem to always ask if they need to do a retake. But if the MD is satisfied, what can they do. And again, look at the songs that come out these days. They are so similar. I have even stopped listening to tamil songs much because their similarity is disgusting. How hard are these songs? I think any fool can sing them, look at all the actors coming to sing:-)). But in all honesty, the reason I gave the above post is because it just seems like the song is really promising consider that it is said to have taken a lot of effort by the singer. This means that the MD has put a lot of effort. So I am looking forward to the release of the audio. We'll see then..

This is an interview from Ananda Vikatan.
"I want to be like a bird. Flying to Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Thiruvanthapuram to sing is my life..." - when Chitra laughs with her dimples it is like a cuckoobird song!
"Even after my songs were introduced, not many people new my face. Only after "sindubairavi" they started asking for autographs. I happily sign my autograph whenever anyone asks me.
"Thangabashmak kuriyidda thamburaadi"
In school and college, this is the only songs my friends write about me. That song describes how I always have a little bit of 'vibUthi' on my forehead!
Whoever I get introduced to, I don't let go with chasing them and getting their autograph. I have Yesu annas(Yesudas), Raja sir's, SPB sirs and everyone else's autographs. I love Janakiamma. I don't know why, but she is a great inspiration for me.
A concert one time. I was singing. Janakiamma was in the crowd. "When I finished singing 'Paadariyean padipariyean", Janakiyamma came on the stage and hugged me and whispered in my ear, "Why couldn't you have been born in my womb". When she said that, tears came into my eyes unconsciously. Those words that till today remain in my mind is the greatest award I recieved.
I like to collect memories. I have got boxes and boxes filled with Little little dolls, letters, diaries, albums, awards, and autograph books. The last outfit that my parents wore, my first salary....a lot of things like that.
From the first music director I sang to, till now, I record their voices and keep when they teach me to sing at re-recording times.
All these can't be understood now. On someday that I sit alone, it would be useful to journey on my old memories. That's why...
I am a bit sensitive. A bit sentimental. When people respect my songs and enjoy them, and write their feelings in letters or if they meet me in person with a handsake or with a few excited words.....lots of good people who's face I don't know...when they congratulate me I break down inside.
If I had turned out to be some music teacher in Kerala, I would have thought of that as a big deal too. But, the it was by god's grace that I came to sing in cinema. And my father's prayers for that to happen....
My mother and father are both music teachers. It was my fathers wish that his daughter reached a hieght he couldn't get to and sing from there. He went through a lot of pain for that. No good prayer goes astray. I am an example of that.
Besides that, something else that I have come to realize...when something unexpectedly good happens in my life another great sadness comes along with it all of the sudden. Even though he was living with cancer, my father never showed it and lived for me. When I got my first national award, he wasn't there to see it. When I received my second (the next year) my mother wasn't there.
I feel as though good is saying "Don't get too happy, girl".
Whenever I feel down, I go straight to 'Mookaambika temple'. I feel as though I am in peace there, and my mind is at rest, in that quiet. I don't know how to say it, but that is 'nitharshanam'!
I have been singing for 12 years now. Whenever Yesu anna sees me he always says, "I don't know who's prayer it is that you are singing, but you getting that voice is a big 'varam'. You have to do something for that." To give a full concert in carnatic music and to compose because I studied music...those two are my prayers..... says chitra smiling.
She said with a smile-
"I don't look at life materialistically. It is feelings. We are all different from each other in character, taste and ideas. Just because of that, I don't think its good to hurt or leave others. Those are my thoughts."
( I have to type the next part in tamil because I have no idea what some of the words mean.)
She goes on to say....
'Oru silai enbathu paaraiyilae irunthu thEvaiyaanatha sethukkirathu maddummillai. ThEvaiyillaathathayum othukirathulEyumthaan erukku' nnu solluvaanka. Nammakku silai mukkiyam. Intha sudsummamthaan sirpam.....vazhgai ellaam!"
