Usha Uthup-A Grand Singer

Usha Uthup has a differnet voice and a style of singing that can be counted in the pop
genre. But, the music directors in south india seem to neglect her. She has recently sung for Ram Gopal Varma's BHOOT and has also done a music video for it, which is being aired in all music channels. She had sung for Ilayaraja in Mani Ratnam's Anjali(Vegam vegam poagum dhooram magic journey...). I guess TFM can start using her. She is happily setted in Kolkatta. In an interview in Sun TV a few months back she said that she was willing to come to Chennai and sing, but no one calls her as she is in Kolkatta. Has she sung for A R Rahman? She does music videos and pop albums in Hindi and Bengali. She's a kind of a sweet person and her songs are really good. Any likings for Usha Uthup??

  Saravanan, there was a pop song in the movie 'Paththu maatha bandham' with Bhanumathi. Bhanumathi and VA Nirmala sing in the movie. Cant remember the first few lines. But its tune is similar to one 70s James Last number. Can you recollect ?

  Didn't she also sing the title track from Veeramani? (Remember, "My Way or No Way".
  Attended her concert in Singapore sometime back. Though she was peeved at the small attendance she gave a fantastic performance. She said she will come back... but she has yet to make a date.

  Is Usha Uthup a tamilian by birth? The reason I ask is because I remember, during my childhood days, she was popular as Usha Iyer, singing in Disco dancer and other movies.

  Kaumudi- I guess she is a Palghat Brahmin! Two of her aged sisters too sometimes take part in her show :)) They call themselves the Swami sisters (In a review of their show in Indian Express, Amita Malik referred to them as "two women each with one leg in their graves, made a ghastly sight in sleeveless blouses")
  
  Geeth- That Bhanumathi number is a classic- it goes 'Let me try-let me try'! Another great Bhanumathi number in the same Pathu Maadha Bandham is the classical 'Ramanukku mannan mudi'-showing the wide range of singing she was capable of!

  "Malligai Poo" (Under the Mango Tree) still my favorite jolly good Usha Uthup number. Who composed this movie? Very cheerful and buoyant woman. I enjoy simply watching her move and her voice is unique. It would've been great if her huge presence was "increasingly" utilized in movie roles too, she could help revive Devar films "potentially." I am imagining a role for Usha in Rajinikant film "Annai Oru Aalayam" and plus co-starring with MGR film in "Nalla Neram". Aagatum Da Thangai Rani Unthan Meni Medhuva Thallamma, Padhama Thullamma.

  I used to be a big fan of Usha in my younger days. So for those who are interested some informations on Usha Uthup:
  First of all, she is a woderful singer. Started in the late sixtees or seventees. she brought the popculture to India in a such an extensive manner. The late sixtees and seventees witnessed famous contributions from her, namely, scotch and soda,Jumbolay, beautiful sunday, yeh ding a ling etc.In Hindi,her numbers like Dum maro dum in Hare Rama Hare Krishna,Koyi vaha aha nache in Disco dancer etc cannot be forgotten by anybody. The number "Peethambara Krishna"from the film, Madanosthavam is also a very good song. She likes Calcutta and has written and sung songs on calcutta.
  
  She was originally Usha Iyer, but became Usha Uthup when she got married to Udup. She was there in Cochin for a while when she really spread the pop fever in Kerala.
  
  Usha went to calcutta in the earlier half of seventies. There also she created a big audience likng pop music. She even used to come and sing not only in big auditoriums , but also in small gatherings like Pooja Pandals of calcutta.She became very famous in calcutta when she picked up a fight with one of the ministers who disliked western music.
  Usha's father wa Sami Iyer, who was the police commissioner of Bombay.She has three sisters, Uma Pocha, Indira Moni and Maya Sami.All of them are very good singers. Uma Pocha is very famous for her numbers like Bombay Meri Hai and Mimi Mimi.Usha used to sing Bomay Meri Hai in stages better.
  
  A big support for Usha is her base guitarist , Emil Isac.He is in her troop for more than 25 years.

  There is one error in the above posting. Dum maro dum is not sung by Usha Uthup in Hare Rama Hare Krishna.Regret for the inadvertent error.However, this one song which she always likes to sing on stage shows.

  another UU Hindi song that was very popular with us when we were in school was 'Hari om hari, hari om hari' (which we would sing as 'Hurry home hurry' while going home from school : ) This song was in the lines of 'One way ticket'.

  Kamal Haasan recently recorded an English song for his home production, Nala Damayanthi, starring Madhavan and Geetu Mohandas. Haasan first sang in English 27 years ago for the Malayalam film, Siva Thandavam. It was a duet with Usha Uthup under M B Srinivas' baton. The Nala Damayanthi song (lyrics: Pradeep Govind; music: Ramesh Vinayakam) has been picturised on Madhavan roaming the streets of Australia after having lost all his belongings, including his passport. Homesick and unhappy, he sings:

  Don't know what to do
  And I don't know what to know
  Groping in the dark

  Madhavan plays Nala, a Brahmin youth from Palghat who goes to Australia to work as a cook; the film is all about his hilarious misadventures there. One of its highlights is the peculiar Malayalam-Tamil Palghat dialect spoken by Madhavan. Haasan himself did this to perfection in Michael Madana Kama Rajan. Haasan was originally planning to play Nala himself, but decided to cast Madhavan after watching him in Anbe Sivam. Nala meets his Damayanthi in the form of a Tamilian from Jaffna who was born and brought up in Australia. Geetu Mohandas, who plays Damayanthi, speaks Sri Lankan Tamil in the film. Haasan himself successfully adopted the accent in his hit Tamil comedy, Tenali. Much to the delight of Madhavan's fans, his next movie - Nala Damayanthi with the Malayalam actress Geetu Mohandas is all set to release by June first week. The Kamal Haasan - Mouli team, which earlier worked for Pammal K. Sambandham has put their effort into this romantic comedy. For the most part shot in Australia, this movie is based on the story of an Indian Palghat Brahmin cook on foreign soil. Though Kamal penned the script for the movie, since he has already done a similar role in Michael Madana Kama Rajan, a Brahmin cook from Palghat, Maddy has come out as his perfect choice. 'The film is not about humour and laughter alone. There is a poignant story in the film. There is a lot of humour but we have not created any situations just for laughter. The situations just happen and make you laugh. For example, this man suffers because of his lack of knowledge of English, which may look funny to the viewers but to him, it is not funny' says Producer Mouli who is keeping his fingers crossed for the release.   Usha Uthup is a great artist with boundless enthusiasm & a magnificent voice.. strong & low, a true Contralto... it has been said in England that "there is no greater achievement in music than to become a well-loved contralto" - Usha is indeed a beloved artist & I am very thankful that her gifts continue to be undiminished by time..   I had an album by Usha Uthup in my college days. She was a good looking woman too. The LP had a nice picture of her in a saree and strumming a guitar. I still remember her 'white winged dove', and 'Listen to the falling rain' from that album. 'Malligai Poo' ('Under the mango tree, on the banks of the Cauvery '( :) ) was another memorable song she sang in Tamil films.
