After reading the IR financial crisis in a thread, I went to a CD shop (at Palakkad, Kerala) to buy at least one CD of IR. They said KK+MVU is available on a single CD for Rs 400. (The shop keeper offered a discount of 10% as this has not been selling for long and he is contemplating return to distributor). The price sounded absolute non-sense to me as both films' cassettes are available for a max. of Rs 80. Means, who is going to packet this additional money? It is not IR or any of the copy right owners. But some fellow who is greedy of who can't produce CDs at affordable cost. (same shop sells T series CDs for 75-80 bucks, even a low qty market like malayalam film CDs sell at around 200).
We all know that the CD media is cheap; designer's don't charge much money (as the cassette prices show). Then the only possible reasons are:
a) High eqpt cost with very low ROI. This can be made better only with large vol. sales which again points to lowering of prices. (Vicious cycle)
b) Greed - nothing can be done about it.
Friends, it's high time some influential person takes up this issue so that the standard of an average listener of TFM goes up!

one reason why not many, atleast I, dont buy CDs that often is, new releases are invariably packaged with some other not-so-good, or an unknown movie. while this is an attempt by the distributor to market the flop songs, it also makes us think many times before buying the CD. if you wait for a reasonable amount of time, until the craze for the new movie fades away, it's normally bundled with some decent songs.
I bought 'kaadhalukku mariyaadhai' when it was new, and i got songs from 'seran, sozhan, pandian' also with it. i have no comments on these songs! so.. for your vicious cycle to eventually lead to cheaper CDs, the output from the MDs also must increase qualitatively. that's when public can buy new albums without much thinking, which will increase ROI on the part of the distributor.
BTW, i did not see KK+MVU combo here in US at all. the only option i got was KK+police killady. i wud've loved to get the combo you saw!

Folks:
The price of Rs 400 does not seem reasonable to me, since it converts to about 10 US $ and I have generally found that tamil CDs in USA sell at $11 to $15. A CD distributer told me that CDs differ in price because of the equipment (or the manufacturer) they use to make. For instance tamil CDs are mostly AAD type (with A=analoge and D=digital, first letter for original recording, second letter for the type of tape recorder for mixing and editing and third letter for mastering, which is always D, and is the CD. My guess is that the cost probably depends on the type and quality of equipment as well as the place, used for the third letter. My CDs are from all over the place, HMV, EMI (both recorded in UK), Oriental records (USA), Music India (Korea), INRECO (IR's banner, singapore) and even some lable in Germany. I have found that there is a quite a bit of variation in quality of CD recordings. Part of it depends on original source, I felt it depends on the care and equipment they use in mastering into CDs. I have the same song recorded from different labels, with a substantial difference in quality. Therefore, I would not advise to buy low priced CDs and I have found them consistently poor in quality. My experience is that all the CDs priced $12 and above are decent and good, except when the orinigal piece itself is poor. I beleive the EMI is good for old MSV songs, because EMI or Gramphone Co of India have rights to most of the MSV songs and they reproduce from their original files. For IR's songs almost all the CDs are pretty good if they are from the above lables. Especially the INRECO CDs recorded in England/Singapore or the Pyramid CDs are quite good.
