I think JayaMohan is a better critique of film than many magazines. I also like sivAji, bArathirAja, IR but we should be open to criticism. I also do not watch that many movies (leave alone tamil) - direction/script/acting in tamil movies has a long way to go. sivAji came from the stage drama days and we have to keep that in mind. BR, I think, is a pioneer in 'naturalness' or yathArtham in his own words. You can feel the characters are almost real. But, like Jayamohan, says the script/screenplay maybe a bit contrived. About IR's BGM, this is just his own opinion. Maybe IR interpreted the scenes differently. He probably, thought if the screen play/dialogue is subtle, why not use music to show the inner turmoil of the characters.
mahabs..probably we should not ignore him. See, movies, politics, (like software :)) is big business. People make compromises. So if the audience and the creators collectively make an effort then we will have better joys in ours daily lives.

BTW, Re: comedy. I like many of koundamani/senthil stuff. I think this is one area where we have a developed a 'style/genre'. But I dont think this fits in with the concept of a movie (just like songs, for another eg). Are there pure comedy TV shows on cable back home ?
Last comedy, I watched, was some dark humor by koundamani- worshipping his mother's ashes whom he killed/euthanised. He used the term 'mercy killing' on screen. I am sure this will offend some people but he was trying to convey a message, right ?

i admire his novels, though not his views. imo, a creator need not be a good critic. or his tastes in other field may not be good enough.
perhaps, the sound system in that theatre was bad. i saw the movie kasi at shanthi in chennai. the worst sound system they are having. esp. during the interval, i had to leave the hall, despite if ir's good old songs.

The production unit about the telugu version of Sethu , "Seshu" .
"...Yuvan Shankar Raja had retained three of his father Ilayaraja's compositions from the Tamil version. He has come up with two original tracks,
which are on par with the maestro...."
The songs are available at www.teluguzine.com

I listened to the songs @teleguzine. The audio quality is pathetic. The 2 new songs composed by Yuvan are chiya chiya and saayantram. Both offer nothing new. Usual telegu songs!Any tel.md could have composed them.

'Saayantram' is a good one with some interesting rhythm and bass patterns, you got to listen to it from an original source though! "Akasam Kindundi" is another new song that is fresh and yuvan-ish! Why he got to compose for an old and jaded Rajasekar is beyond comprehension (can u imagine this moron playing a college student)!
Any telugu MD could've composed it? Now that's a wild claim!

Kiru/Mahabs, Jayamohan also wrote kanyakumari, in which the hero is a cinema director. several passages in that novel about the workings of the cine industry, about creativity in cinema, and the minor nuances to get a good screenplay, are pretty good.

kAsi, AhA! what a lovely, authentic Raja score (well, MY KIND OF score to be precise).
Got a chance to listen to them (without disturbance) only today & really enjoyed them. Except the first song (en mana vAnil) which resembles some old song, all others are real gems (in spite of HH's distorted stresses, killing Thamizh)...
Nativity, nativitynnA ennannu kEkkaravangaLukku RajavOda yet another answer `mAnu thOlu'...
I can also sense the throat choking sadness underlying in the songs...must see the movie to enjoy the interludes better...

While listening to the `mAnu thOlu' for the second time I was just thinking why no one else is able to reproduce this kind of authentic TN village score yet...in fact all have tried (may be with the exception of ARR /HJ)...
We must treasure this pokisham, Raja, for his urumi mELam songs alone:-))...I even thought we should encourage him to dedicate, say 90% of his efforts, to village songs...
what a relief after his average effort in friends (Thamizh)...good to also see this movie & songs a hit in TN...It's released yesterday in Palakkad (yes 40 days after TN release & running, which means it is a definite hit -otherwise nobody will touch for Kerala territory..that too where vasanthium...ran for months)

Friends,
Can you pls give me few songs of Maestro with 'Ekkaalam' instrument used in it? If you ask what 'Ekkaalam' instrument is, it is used in 'Maanu Tholu' of film 'Kaasi' in the first interlude. Or the instrument used just before the beginning of war or welcoming some one. One of my American friends liked(or mesmerized) by that instrument's sound and expecting songs with that music.
eden,
A coincidence you have talked about that song.
Sorry for this digression. Appreciate your help.

kAsi:
can someone clarify what kind of pipe is used in the `nAn kANum ulagam' song for the sound that immediately follows `yAr kANakkoodum' (popppopopOmmm) Got to be some imported instrument...probabaly for those who are particular about `sounds' and not so much about `notes':-))
Srikanth sir, what about a vimarsanam on kAsi?

eden..what a coincidence ..that you should talk about kAsi..this weekend I have been listening to quite an amount of music. Mainly IR (who else :)) and so was piqued by his passion for the folk idiom. Why is that the mainstream does not like this genre ? It is OUR music. Why dont we support own folk arts ? When I saw kAsi, the mAnu thOLu song reminded me of the temple festivals in my home town. But nowadays, we dont have silambu, kOlAttam, poikkAl kuthirai or the late night kooththu in the street. All we have now is one mass media (movies) dominating and likely crushing the smaller arts. Somehow, I am at a loss, how we can make the new generation really enjoy our folk music.
I was in a Chinese mall this weekend, trying to buy some seafood and those guys also are churning these POP songs. Earlier the West physically invaded/rules us now they are conquering us culturally and commercially. I am thinking once we lose the battle on music, we will lose the battle on language and finally our traditions ..and also an ancient tradition would 'have been subsumed by the white man's way of life !!! I hope I am just being a litte paranoid and my fears are exaggerated.
(BTW, I listened to geethAnjali from LP on Martin Logan Odyssey speakers and McIntosh amplification..Wow what a pleasure..hmm..one day I will get a rig like that :) :) )
(bb..thanks for the tidbit. since the only literature I know are the ones that ship with software :) I am not familiar with Jayamohan ..he seems like a decent guy..I should check out his writings. Mass media is degenerating at the hands of big businesses).
- From: suresh (@ 202.88.155.34) on: Mon Feb 11 03:00:20 EST 2002
kiru, you would not have had one in a million chance to see "Aandan Adimai" i'm sure:)
have u heard the song "enthan raajiyathil" from the film? a truly wasted effort that went unnoticed.. there's a sequence of about 5 mins where satyaraj (the orphan youth!) walks in search of his parents towards an agraharam. must confess even in a thiruttu VCD:( this BGM piece was very special
