I have not listened to these recently so I cant
write in detail but the most striking songs
are

Paruvame Pudiya Paadal Padu..

IR's arrangement of music for this song is quite amazing.Nobody other than SPB could have done
justice to this song. So rich in melody , It is
one of my all time fav of IR.

Kanmaniye Kaathal Enbathu..

This is the song probably (If I recollect right)
made me sit up and notice IR. Nice words and
excellent melody. Who is the Female voice?

If you want to talk about path breaking songs,
probably you should include "Cholam Vedaikiyele!"
(16 Vayadinile) in this list. What a difference
he made with that song! The whole focus of TFM
was shifted to Naattupura Paadal from then on.

iLamai oonjalaadugiradhu, SPB/SJ. great acoustic guitar pieces (however short) in the prelude and interludes. lovely melody too. The song nee kaettaal naan maattaen endraa solvaen kaNNaa from this movie also saw some great guitar.

songs of Ilayaraja and the final list is more
or less ready now. I believe we have done
a decent job.

then do u know the starcast in the film and the tentative year.do u guys know whether songs from vague films like these are available in cassette shops.this has been one of my major worries.IR has given some major hits for some dabba films in the early 80's.some examples like'meenkodi theril' from karumbu vil.so i think it would be of great help to many people like me,if u could say whether films like the above mentioned one, aval appdithaan,gayatri,mudivalla arambham etc. are available.u can also sugest your favourite shops in madras or trichy since iam interested in collecting songs strictly from the early 80's.

All songs of iLamai kAlangal are very good - including songs like padippula zero nadippula hero rOttile romeo - excellent singing by SPS. Is a great song in spite of the lyrics.

A more famous song in Aradhanai - by a singer called Radhika - iLam pani thuLi vizhum nEram. Great.

Listen to songs from enakkaha kAthiru - unforgettable melodies, fabulous orchestration from the Maestro. Also all songs from Tik Tik Tik ! Pop music in Maestro's unique style. The songs have Raja written all over them. I wonder why Raja does not compose music like that. Maybe aging has something to do with that. Listen to Rasikane en arukil vA from Manipur MAmiyAr (never released). A beautiful song. Whoever did the humming in the song has done a terrific job. Sounds like Raja - can anybody confirm this ?

in tik tik tik 'idu oru nilak kaalam' is a great song.
what transitions take place in the song.great guitar followed by a short classical piece and back again to the original rhythm effortlessly.
that bharathiraja has to stoop down to the levels of deva and hamsalekha thereafter is deplorable.

netru indha neram-by lata rajnikanth in the same film is also a nice song.these songs came at a time when the general opinion was that raaja
is just a folk musician.he shut everyone's mouth
thru these songs.

Thavikkudhu thayangudhu oru manadhu is from Nadhiyaith thedi vandha kadal. There is another excellent song in that movie 'engeyo Edho pattondru kEttEn by PS (very effortless).

Vidiya vidiya solli tharuvaen - pokkiriraja is by MSV.

There is one more good song from Kizhakkae pogum rail - Malargalae nadhaswarangal (MV & SJ) - song not in the movie.

there is a song in azhiyatha kolangal by SPB which goes like 'naan ennum pozhuthu' which is exactly similiar to a song by lata in the movie anand.music for nand is by salil chowdhury, so that explains it.i was a bit disappointed that IR
had lifted the tune initially.

Hi Vijay!

Yes indeed the BGM in Aanpaavam is superb. It must be at least 7 years now from the first time I heard them. I still remember most of the memorable BGM in the movie. My most favorite peice is a beautiful flute melody which repeats often in the first part of the movie. It is first introduced when Pandiarajan leaves his watch with Revathi when she comes to fetch water. It repeats quite a few times when P & R meet and love starts to blossom.

I was actually expecting a song from that melody but it has not happened yet. I am worried it may attract Deva's attention now. So, all Raja fans if you get a chance please enjoy this lilting BGM before it is released as a Deva song.

Thanks for the info.. All along I thought I was crazy over IR's music... but I think I am wrong.. There are a lot of great fans for IR.. Good to know that.. The reason I visit this section too often is because I was in my teens and then in college during the phase - 1978 to 1984. I still think it is IR's great music days. (well, IR can go on forever.. we all know that !!) I feel nobody mentioned the movie "pudumai penn". Another Bharathiraaja movie with two excellant duets.
(1) Kaadal... Mayakam (Jeyachandran and Sunanda ??)
(2) I forget this one (I know it KJY and Uma R)

I am very reluctant to contribute to this page because I am afraid that somebody else might hv mentioned the song I want to talk about. Still I couldnt resist this one.

Pudhumai Penn had a wonderful song that somehow did not become a super-duper hit. "Kaadhal Mayakkam". very nice song. Many of my friends became hardcore Revathi fans after seeing the picturisation of that song.

Also anyone remember any songs from Kai Kodukkum Kai ? Rajini, and Revathi is blind in that movie. There were some nice songs in that too.

rajni sings with 2 kids with gopalakrishnan watching on.the song comes sometimes on sat TV.
kazhugu being a dabba movie had wonderful songs.the other 2 songs are
ponnoviyam-IR,SJ - a fantastic fast paced melody with good humming and can also be included in the great 'humming songs' list

I dont know if somebody mentioned the following songs:-

1. Degam Siragaddikum - Movie ? (Is it by Jency?)
This song really evokes the feeling of falling in love and
captures the dreamy,intoxicated feeling of love! Whenever I listen
to this I take a lonely walk thru my adolescent life.

2. Azhagaga Sirirthathu Indha Nilavu - Movie ? (Jayachandran)
The split pallavi makes the song unique and enjoyable.
Nice Violins.

3. Vaanathila Velli Ratham - Some Ramarajan Movie
I like the melody in this though Mano's voice does not add to the beauty
of this song.

4. Yaar Thoorigai Seidha Oviyam ? Movie ? (Some junk Mohan Movie)
The sequence of Guitar/Violins in this song is a beaut
and SPB kills me with his style.

5. Poovil VanDu - Kaathal Oviyam
The intro violin will urugi'fy even a KaL ULLAM! The Violin Section
is outstanding. This song is another example of how lyrics should be written.
The music and the words blend into a nice musical experience.

6. Maan Kanden maan Kanden - Raja Rishi
The contrast of the force in pallavi and the subduedness in the stanza are great.

7. Metti Oli Kaathodu - Metti
What Can I write about this song? IR excells! Especially the melody in
"Kothai Malar Poompaatham Vaa Vennude" I attain my Nirvana. The invitation in
"Vaa Vennudhe!" is so irresistible.
