MDs vs New Singers

  Hi, having talked about IR-Hariharn combo, I have noticed this phenomenon for years, especially with IR and am interested in finding out how other MDs have done over the years from good old days. Deva is an exception who accepts all the new singers whoever introduces.
  
  IR NEVER SEEMS TO ACCEPT NEW SINGERS INTRODUCED BY OTHER MDS UNTIL MUCH MUCH LATER( SOME SOONER & SOME NEVER ) - Why?
  
  Let me list the example cases that I remember and see how we figure it all out( if we can??? )
  
  1. Suresh Peters: He is a telented singer, but for certain types of songs only, I think. He was introduced by ARR and used for a few movies and ARR stopped using him after Suresh Peters released his own albums and did music on his own for "Coolie"( tamil movie ). IR has not used him at all. It made sense to use him for Prabhudeva in Raasaiyya and would have made a greater impact if IR did use him. Instead, IR used Arunmozhi. I am not going to debate ih Arunmozhi is better or worse than Suresh Peters, etc.
  
  2. Sahul Ameed - ARR Introduced him and he sounded to some extent like Seergazhi Govindarajan to me. IR has refused to use him and it is too Late now becuase he is no more.
  
  3. Anupama - Another good singer introduced by ARR but never used by IR until now.
  
  4. Unnikrishan - Introduced by ARR but IR readily accepted him and used in his movies.
  
  5. Anuradha Sriram - ARR introduced her and it took a while before IR started using her.
  
  6. Hariharn - Introduced by ARR but it took a while( I almost thought IR would never use him especially after the interview in which Hariharan mentioned ARR as hif favorite MD ) before using him. I think IR-Hariharn will blossom into an excellent combination for TFM.
  
  7. Krishnaraj - Introduced by Deva and became popular with some recent songs but IR & ARR have not used him at all until Now.
  
  8. Arunmozhi - Introduced by IR and have been singing for years. Deva had started using him but ARR never did and I am not sure if he ever will.
  
  9. Sunanda - Introduced by IR and have been singing for years and has a great voice too( some what like Uma Ramanan ). Deva accepted her but ARR never did.
  
  10. Devi - Intriduced by IR and Deva had just started using her but ARR never did.
  
  11. I am not listing all those "Specialty" singers like Udith Narayan, Apache Indian, Sukvinder Singh, et al.
  
  I will leave it to you all to add more to the list or discuss about each of these cases. I am interested in your opinions.

  One thing I want to point out is that Deva scores music for umpteen movies and so he can afford to use more singers than IR & ARR. ARR, in particular, does a handful of movies per year and he probably cannot use all the singers available in the Music World and also, ARR is interested in trying new voices more often than other MDs.
  
  But, IR is kind of in between, but, why is he not using the new singers introduced by other MDs until much later. Somehow, I tend to think that IR being a great MD waits for the new voices to mature and get better before using in his music.
  
  So, on to you G's!!!

  One reason I can think of IR started using Unnikrishnan immediately is that Unni has a solid carnatic music background.

  ARR did use Sunandha for a couple of songs.Basically these MDs are scared to use new voices.Even ARR ,who has introduced lot of new talents,repeats Hari and UNNiK very often(Deva is now stuck up with Hari i think:)).IR has a very strange behaviour of using singers.During his initial periods he used only Janaki and MV completely ignoring Vani and Suseela.After he introduced Chitra he started using her often.And suddenly in middle 80s he started using PSuseela
  often.Even SPShailaja,Who was introduced by him was totally neglected.But these MDs are better than MSV who never attempted to introduce new singers

  Ravi, I think, IR waited until "Sathi Leelavathy" to use Unni since "Kaathalan" - I don't remember the length of the gap in terms of months/years.

  Ramki, are you sure about ARR using Sunandha? MSV did introduce a few, I think. Didn't MSV introduce Malaysia Vasudevan, Minmini, even Swarnalatha. But, considering the years he was in the field, this number is very negligible.
  
  It is good and bad to stick to the same singers and introducing too many new voices. At one time, I was able to give the name of the singer just hearing the song, but not any more. It is good to be able to relate to the singers when you hear the song; at the same time, it is good to hear fresh, talented voices too.

  MSV Introduced B.S.Sasirekha, Jolly Abraham, Jayachandran (in Tamil) and it was MSV who gave so many chances for SPB when SPB came into Tamil field. I agree with Amar that considering number of years MSV was in the field the numbers were less

  Amar ARR used Sunandha for that 'raunchy'song in Kizhakku seemaiyile and she is one of the singers
  in 'indiraiayo illai sundhariyo'(kaadhalan)
  
  Kaliappan i do agree that MSV introduced few singers but apart from Jaichandran he didnt attempt to repeat BSS or JollyAbraham or Swarnalatha.If not for Ilaiyaraja BSS or SWarna
  would have gone unnoticed

  Wasn't swarna introduced in "maalayil yaaro malarodu..." ksahtriyan ???
  
  Anuradha sriram was introduced by deva.She herself told this in an interview.
  
  IR has always taken care that the singers should pronounce the words clearly and correctly(ex: check the difference betn Oh butterfly and yengenge yengenge(N.Ner) sung by AB).Probably he felt that the peculiar accent of S.Peters doesn't suit his kind of songs.
  I can never accept SP singing kaadha vaanile (raasaiyya)which would certainly have spoiled the song.
  
  IR does songs for the story and cast and not the other way .He'd never use/would have used singers like shahul hameed for sthyaraj!!!
  
  Anupama is a great singer of western music.Only a month back I came to know she also knows carnatic.I really wonder why IR hasn't used her.But her voice doesn't suit a soft natured female.ARR used her aptly in chandralekha and mercury pookkal (the characters not being soft natured).

  shankar and Vijay : swarnas first song was in 'needhikku dhandhanai'(chinnanjiru kiliye-with KJY)and MSV was the MD

  I think Shankar is right about Anuradha Sriram. She did not sing first for ARR. In fact, the Anuradha in "Indira" is a completely different person. The Anuradha in "ini achham achham illai" (Indira) was singer Sujatha's daughter.

  IMHO, anupama has an absolutely sexy voice. But she doesnt know Tamil. (I have this from the horse's mouth : her cousin, who was a colleague of mine, told me that she was born and brought up in Delhi, and doesnt know a word of Tamil)
  
  And another point that might be of interest : I believe SPB sang first in the film 'Hotel Ramba' under MSV's direction, though the film never got released. So the first MD to bring him into TFM was KVM, I think. But I remember SPB paying tributes to another MD (a telugu one, I think) for having discovered him (SPB).

  Guys, why have you been ignoring Kavita Krishnamurthy? She knows Tamil, has a carnatic and Hindustani classical background and is IMHO a terrific singer. Was it RD Burman who introduced her to TFM (some film starring Sathyaraj and Gouthami). IR used her for the song 'muththirai ippodhu kuththidu thappaadhu raaja, raaja' (some rajini film).
  
  Have you heard her sing that western classical piece in Roop ki Rani, choron ka raja? Fantastic.

  I have seen Anupama appearing in the TV serial, Paarambariyathai Nokki. I have also seen her in AVRamanan's TV programmes. She speaks Tamil.
