Let me start by saying that I am probably not totally qualified to comment because I don't really know much about Tamil Pop music. In fact I know very, very little.
1. Advantage: I feel that it will definitely bring about some good, as talented people who are unable to make it big in the world of Tamil Film Music will probably do so here, since they won't have to rely on Music Directors who are inclined to pick only "trendy" singers. Now, with the popularity of recording, editing and sound engineering software and hardware, it has become a lot less expensive to produce work, and I think people with talent don't have to rely on any big name record companies to support them during their growing stages. I think there are definitely advantages.
2.(i) Possible disadvantage: But having observed the Pop music scene in the North, I fear there will be some junk, which is probably going to be really successful for some time, but I feel these will soon die out, as we have seen in the north (Baba Sehgal, etc. were really successful at the start, but have practically disappeared now). And I think that we should not simply follow the trends set by MTV, Channel[V], etc.
(ii) Another thing we should remember is that popular musicians can become powerful role models for youngsters, so we should be careful about the kind of music that is promoted. So far, we have not had any musicians having any negative effects on us, but we must remember that popular musicians such as Elvis Presley, The Beatles and others represented periods of major cultural change in the West. Obviously, they did not change the culture themselves, but some of their non-music-related activities showed the way forward for others to follow. This was not because they were musicians, but their popularity, which resulted from their musical abilities gave them the status of almost demi-gods. Their activities, such as drug-taking, etc., were associated with their music, and people began viewing them as role models. So we must be careful about the artists who we promote. We definitely should maintain standards highly enough so that "rappers" like Eminem, Dr Dre, etc. not allowed. We don't need swearing, violence, etc. If that sort of thing starts appearing, that would be a really dangerous trend.
3. Conclusion: We need musicians like A R Rahman, Yuvan Shankar Raja, Harris Jayaraj, D Imaan, Ranjith Barot and others, who in my opinion can provide us with good blends of western-style music and our own styles. I am not saying that purely western-style music should be avoided, but I think it would be really nice to see our own styles being used. What we should avoid is following the west simply because it is "trendy".

Well I didn't realise that there was actually a thread among the current topics on whether" target="_top">http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/14420.19.15.58.html">whether or not artists have to be role models. This is related to the point I was making about the ability of popular musicians to become role models. Let's not digress too much, but I wish to add one point to my previous posting here: lifestyle trends set by musicians and other popular artists often only form part of a larger change in the cultural values and attitudes of any society. But certainly, they (all popular artists, i.e. actors, writers and others included besides musicians), almost uniquely, have the potential to influence such changes in quite major ways. Whether most artists so far have made use of this power they have for the benefit of society is debatable, but it certainly is true that they wield this huge amount of power. So we must be careful about the amount of power we give to popular artists.
I realise that what I have just been talking about concerns all arts, not just Tamil music, whether pop or film. Sorry for this (really major) digression.

it gets younger ppl interested in the tamil music, where as they wouldn't be interested to some of the older music their parents listen 2 true only for the ultra westernized sectors of the city (is there one in t.n?) which is a very small percentage of the tamil population.

This is an interesting topic. To a certain extent I do agree with Vijay. I think Tamil Music should extend its scope outside film music. It will give birth different varied uncompromised talent from world tamil community. But my humble opinon is that I think western influence with tamil music should be minimal not over the top. We have to preserve our culture while catering audience of all age groups without losing the tamil identity in our music
