This is not about IR Vs ARR or Kannadasan Vs VM or even KJY Vs Hariharan. I like both these songs. They have a few things in common. Both are about 'Kadhali VarNanai' and the music is very minimal. What do you think, guys(gals)?

'kanavA illai kAtRA' song comes in the film Ratchagan and it is a nice song. I mean the music! :-)

Kana vaa Ilaai Kaatraa (Saraswathi Ragam) - This song comes in Ratchagan, when the Hero carries the heroine up many flights of stairs and describes her as 'weightless'.
"Kaiyil Mithakkum Kanavaa Nee
Kai Kaal Mulaithatha Kaatraa Nee
Kaiyil Yenthiya Kannakam Illaiye
Nuraiyaal Seithatha Siliayaa nee.
Ipaadi Unnai Yenthi Kondu
Inthira Logam Poyviduvenn....."
And so it goes, it's a great song which describes the girl as a statue like, dream creature.
More songs that describe women as Godly creatures:
1)Anjali Anjali from Duet -
"Nee intha nilam odu pirnthavalaa
Poovulkkul Karuvaahi valanthavalaa"
2)Vennilavil Theril Yeri from Duet
"Un sentaamarai paathathi Serupaaga pirapenn"
3)Endhan uyiril ullavum devi from Mona Lisa
4)Anbe Anbe from Jeans
"Thevathai kulitha thuligalai alli
Theertham enre naan kudipenn"
I'm not very good with Tamil, so I may be wrong, if so, please forgive me.

Ravy: pengaLai varniththu neraya paadalgaL irukkE? The only thing that might distinguish these two songs is the lack of accompaniments... I cannot comment further on that as I haven't listened to the Ratchagan song yet.. hmmm.. azhagE azhagu dEvadhai kEttE romba naaL aagi vittadhu. :(.

Sorry. I should have mentioned the respective movie names. The other song is from Rajapaarvai. Of course there are a lot of songs that belong to 'PeNN VarNanai' category, but these 2 like Ravi agreed, have very minimal accompaniments. It has been a long time since I listened to AzagaE Azhagu song but when I listened to the Ratchagan song I remembered the other song (no, it is not the tune). I used to discuss the KJY song with my friends that only KJY's voice is suitable for that kind of a song.
This Ratchagan song is not exactly about 'Azhagu' but about the weight or the lack of it. Of late VM seems to be obsessed with weightlessness. This one and the 50kg Tajmahal from Jeans.
Have you guys noticed? These days the line of thinking has clearly changed when it comes to VarNanai. Out are Meen pondra kangal, sangu kazhuthu, moongil thoLgal, Kovai udhadu etc. They are replaced with exotic fruits like strawberry, peach etc.

When it comes to describe about a woman,
vaali has done a very decet job in
kaana kaanum kankal in aakni saatchi.
He goes like this:
kumari uruvam kuzanthai ullam
rendurm ontrana mayam neeyo
The song picturization is really good and I believe that this movie is one the gems from kB

Another"Penn Varnanai" gem from APOORVA RAAGANGAL:
"Pinniya Koonthal Karunira Naagam
Penmai Ilakkanam Avalathu Degam
Devargal Valarthidum Kaaviya Yaagam
Antha Devathai Kidaithaal Athu En Yogam.
Oru puram Paarthaal Mithilayin Maithili
Marupuram Paarthaal Kaaviri Maadhavi
Mugam Mattum Paarthaal Nilaivin Ethiroli
Muzhuvathum Paarthaal Avaloru Bhairavi..."
I think this is a classic in every sense of the
word! What a great combination of skills -
Kannadasan, M.S. Viswanathan & K.J. Yesudas. The verses were great, the music was super, and the singing was extremely good. This song was recorded in 1974 when Yesudas was just a beginner!

Correction: In my previous posting about the song
from APOORVA RAAGANGAL, the second line should read "Penmaiyin Ilakkanam ....", not "Pemmai ..."
Sorry about the typo!
