Shankar-Ehsan-Loy...maybe the only other MD with Bollywood roots also composing for TF....I was listening to their "Dil Chahta Hai"..except for the title track, all the other songs seem to meander around...but they are the only ones around in Bollywood who give a original techno touch to their music apart from ARR.
"Aalavandhaan" is their next big TF release...would like to hear your opinions on this trio.

Hi Ehsaan! It is very nice to have you join us in the forum. The beauty about Indian film music today is that everybody with talent can have a chance to prove their worth. Even if they lose out, in a few years you could come back again. Being a huge fan of music of yester years from all over the world, not just from within India, I find that it is not that composers even of today cannot come up with melodies but because there has been a surfeit of it. It has seemed so mechanical. It is very relieving to see with the coming of AR Rahman, music making is evolving into an intelligent presentation of an idea. Many different musical styles and melodic structures and interpretations are becoming understood and accepted by music fans of today. Would not have been possible many years before, because of a critical mass gained by very few composers whose music never seemed stale. It has been difficult for me to accept ARR's interpretation of how today's music should be structured, but it tells you one thing clearly. Indian film music is an unbelievable storehouse of millions of melodious songs and it will see the genre evolving with several faces delivering exciting musical ideas and concepts from the likes of ARR, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and many more. Best Wishes!
(I liked a coupe of Aalavandhan's songs. Generally for the idea and as you explained the tone of the movie dictated that. I think Kamal Hasan has challenged you all and the audience all alike to understand why the songs should be like what they are. One movie where I really enjoyed the way the songs were just right for the screenplay was Kamal's own Apoorva Sahotharargal.)

Dear Ehsaan,
I have not yet listened to Aalavandhan , but I have listened to DIL CHAHTA HAI. It is a wornderful music from U guys. That too, the song picturised as a black and white film song is really wonderful. Your work in Mission Kashmir is really wonderful. The song "Dhuan Dhuan" really impressed me. To me HFM other than ARR is like a soffacating room. Your teams arraival brought a pleasent change.
I like shankar too. You people should also compose for tamil films regularly. Only by people like you and few others, we will be able to eliminate the copy cats like Deva and SAR etc.
Good keep it up.
Do visit this site often.

Ehsaan,
I will listen to Aalavandhan soon.Your work in Dil Chahta Hai is pretty good.
Can you answer a question for me on Aalavandhan?
Who is the real director of the movie-Suresh krishnaa or Kamal Haasan? From your sitting in music sessions,I think you can say who's in control here?

Hi Trend
Suresh Krishnaa is the director of the film. But since KamalHassan has written the script of the film and the screenplay I guess his input would be a lot !!! I would say it's a sum total of efforts from both of them.

Hi Ehsaan....saw you on MTV Classic where I am not sure if it was you or Loy ..you spoke about your friend who attended a Pink Floyd concert and the music had brought tears (of joy) into his eyes...what are the musical influences that have shaped you ? (I missed out the whole MTV Classic show and saw only the bit I've mentioned).

And I'm sorry about my initial judgement of Dil Chahtha Hai...I really enjoyed the songs more after seeing the film...my favorite is "Kaisi Hai Yeh Rut" - very peaceful and melancholic number !

Hi Cosmician
That Pink Floyd experience was one that a good friend of mine had when he say them in New york the show opened with Wish you were here and he just freaked out. Well my influences are many and varied me being a blues guitarist I am majorly into BB King , Robben Ford , Larry Carlton , Steve Ray etc I like too many rock bands to mention from Bad Company to Iron Maiden , I listen to a lot of ambient electronic stuff like Underworld < Moby , William Orbit etc I'm also very into film soundtracks like Bladerunner and all the Joun Williams , Hans Zimmer stuff. surprisingly I dont listen to Hindi music except for what ARR does he's a genius and a great musician infact i know him quite well from the days he composed jingles. My only Hindi listening was what i heard on the radio as a kid which was a lot !!!!
so there you go there are so many influences i am not mentioning the jazz fusion stuff im into like john scofield and miles davis because then this mail will never end.
Take care
Ehsaan

Thank you for your reply, Ehsaan !
Bladerunner ! Is that actually what inspired you into Electronica ?
Vangelis' haunting soundtrack was memerizing and unforgettable when I had the opportunity to watch the film at USIS in Chennai.
I am sure that it must rank among a major influence in your musical life.

mr ehsan , welcome to this forum. i introduce myself as one among the several crores of mad mad fans of the living genius spb and a follower of tamil film music since 1967 , the glory days of tms. it is nice to see you in aalavandan. personally i was not satisfied with the album as none of the songs are catcy. anyway after seeing your explanation in tfm, i accept that the film can do withoutsongs. perhaps aalavandan songs might become popular after the film is released as has been the case several times earlier.I hope in the next venture you dish out some good melodies and catchy music with top singers at the helm in tamil films especially .

So nice to see you visiting this forum.
I think this is one of the best forums on net for film music though it mainly concentrates on Tamil Film Music, good music from other languages do get their due here. There is also a forum for amatuer composers,if you visit that thread you can see some very interesting intelligent exchanges and anaylsis of different composers of the industry.
Eshan I wanted to know how did u guys arrive at the maintheme for Abhay/Alavandan the one sung by Shankar ? Are you guys doing the BGM for the movie or is it Mr.Mahesh ?
thanks

Hi Ehsan Sir!
I Loved The Aalavandhaan Soundtrack. It Was Very Unique. I Knew The Songs Were Mind Blowing At First Because The Title Track Got To Me. Anyways I Would Like To Know What Are Your Guys Future Projects?
P.S. If You Can, Can You Post Up Each Of Yours Email Addresses...
Oh Ya, I am Going To The Shankar Mahadevan/Hariharan Concert At Toronto, Ontario
- From: Ehsaan (@ 203.197.50.107) on: Sat Sep 1 12:11:07 EDT 2001
Hi Ganesh
The title theme was a one big experiment. We were in the middle of the BGM of Mission Kashmir and we were supposed to send Kamalsir a scratch recording of an idea for the title song.He had briefed us saying to create music that is on the edge. One evening after packing up the MK BGM we sat down to create the title song. I had just bought a new synthesizer and the title song was literally the " test drive " for the new synth. We created the track and then recorded Shankar's vocals on Pro Tools then we proceeded to twist Shankars voice using the myriad effects available including distortion and ring modulation etc. The percussion on the track is played by Shankar and that also has been heavily processed. We all love techno and electronica so it was great fun. Then came the tough part the question wether KamalHassan and the director would approve such and " outside " track. They loved it !!!!!! I guess that was the real test for us and we passed it !!! Kamal is an intense guy he and I get along very well and have many common interests that we sat and chatted about for a long time. I like the quality in him that likes to take his art to the edge so to say.
Hope that gives you insite on the creation of the track. Unfortunately we could not do the BGM as there was a problem with schedules clashing with the BGM of Dil Chahta Hai but I believe that Mr. Mahesh has done a good job. I wish that we could ahve dine the BGM because we are good at doing BGM sorry for being so un - modest but watch mission Kashmir and Dil Chahta Hai.
Take care
Ehsaan

Mr. Ehssaan,
I feel that you guys should go global by cutting a sophisticated techno-melodic pop/fusion album maybe in English and launch yourself as a band in International circuits....you guys can definitely do it as you have the talent and the skills ? Have you got any plans for the same in the near future ?
