I havent seen the movie, just the scenes on TV. His acting seems to be amazing. I have only 1 doubt. The ppl who have seen the Mal. original can tell me whether the singer is just blind or also slightly retarded. If he is just blind, he is overdoing the smiling bit. Else, his acting is tremendous. But, nowhere near RajaParvai Kamal.

Good realistic movie. Vinayan(for his apt direction),Vikram (for his convincing portrayal),Illayaraja (melodious music) have contributed to the movies success.

Kasi was a better movie than the usual masala ones that comes these days. simple and decent cinema.
Vikram tried to do a good job - but i felt he was overdoing and overacting. I fail to understand why he had to keep his mouth wide open - it was very unnatural. Even when he was uttering/singing words that ended with "ma" or "m", his mouth was wide.
IR in recycle mode in Kasi. Punniyam thedia is fully recycled from naan oru sindu from sindubairavi

i saw the movie kasi. wonderful movie. ir is definitely the king of music.
vikram is really natural. i have observed some blind persons, esp. beggers. they are so similar to him. (take this as a compliment!)
in fact all the actors are so natural. perhaps except charli.
happy to see ir's music in meaningful movies, of late!

I saw this movie on VCD. This is a really good movie. By relative standards you can even rate it as excellent. Yeah..I also thought the hero was overdoing his part. But I have to say he surely does remind you of a blind beggar you might have come across on the streets or in a train or at a bus stand. The lyrics and the music really match the situation.
1) naan kaanum ulangal - opens the movie amidst the backdrop of a scenic, lush village, providing a ironic start to the movie.
2) en mana vanil - is sung under a tree for a thiruvizhA audience.
3) mAnu thOlu onnu - is sung when he meets some folk musicians along his way.
4) rokkam irukkira - is when his brother-in-law grabs the money from the bank for blind people as his dowry.
5) punniyam thEdi - is when the villainous village periya manushan visits his hut. The interludes signify the sadness of the affected women (courtesy of the periyan manushan).
6) AththorathilE - is what he plans to sing to his heroine when he gets his eye back.
There are quite a few string scores as background which are really good. I am not sure whether the general audience will appreciate it (it will be just some violin music for many :( :( ).
The mute girl/lover of the hero plays aththOrathile a fantastic fast happy song in a pathos version on her simple violin. This should be a music lesson for the younger/newer MDs :)
I originally thought the songs were not very innovative. But I think all songs have new percussion work. It is only that the arrangement is familiar. This movie is a first for IR in this recording/mixing style. Much more flatter than ambient. You can hear the drums very clearly, very close miked. Compare this with murattuk kALai (another good recording available on raaga.com) you can tell the drums are closer to you than in the older movie. I am sure lots of young people would like this recording. And it should sound good on any music systems.
One thing, I miss in this album, is it does not have 'romantic' songs. If it were some love songs, IR would have used lots of bass score which would make it more melodious (compare with mudhal mariyAdhai, kadalOrak kavidhaigaL). Still this album is a celebration of authentic folk music.

Hi Kiru, that was nice too see your comments about Kaasi movie.
I saw the movie on a reasonably well recorded Video Cassette. It is a reasonably good movie in Tamil in the recent times. It is a realistic movie, although didn't make as much impact as Kutti ( that was so realistic, having seen exact real life situations I was heavily moved my the movie, by the apt portrayal by each and every one and a superb score by Maestro. I mean BGm was just fantastic.
About Kaasi, the songs were more appealing in the movie, although I criticised about HH voice, the songs tunes are so native I couldn't resisit listening to the songs several times, each and every tune is so good, reminiscent of some of the old IR songs.Undoubtedly Vikram and most of the other crew have done a great job, I have always liked vikram right from Ullasam, I missed Meera.
I just sort of tried to view three IR scored movies with blind man in a leading role , wit respect to the BGM, songs, and the movie itself ( although all three are entirely different in the story lines.
1.kaadhal Oviyum, 2. Raaja Paarvai, 3. Kaasi
1. Kaadhal Oviyum, a nice movie from BR/IR/VM combo. GREAT music by maestro, one of the few bests of IR/BR combo, although every one of their combination was a great feast except Vaalibame va vaa ( the songs were no bad though). Some body had mentioned in some other thread comparing IR's work for song tunes In KO vs Kaasi. Each and every song in KO are mesmerizing to listen any no. of times even after 20 years, with so much of freshness. I don't know if somebody will have similar feeling in listening to Kaasi's songs 20 years from now.
BGM in KO was very good compared to Kaasi, for some reasons I thought IR has underplayed in BGM in Kaasi, although there are few sequences with some very good BGM. The entire movie has (Kaasi) so much of emotions, three chartacters mainly Kaasi, his father and his girlfriend, I was expecting even more grand music in BG by Maestro, having seen IR in several movies how he moves the soul with just his great music.Or it may be the pace of the movie which is so well narrated that I might have failed to notice the BGM very keenly, although BGM being unconquered fort of IR it invariably stands out even with one time listening. The blind charecter here is a classical singer and not a musician, a lot of sequences, where IR did a fantastic job.
2. Raaja Paarvai, perhaps one of the best scores by IR which is yet to be reproduced by even IR with similar content. BGM a landmark I would say in TFM, I had taped lot of BGM from the videocassette, I think it is still available on the web in either Raajangam site or some other site, not sure.I remember reading somewhere, IR was expecting a national award for this movie, although he brushes away usually when talked about national awards for music. The emotions of the blind musician are so well presented in the BGM in evry frame. I wish Kamal/Singitham/IR give one more such movie.
3.Kaasi, the BGM, I mentioned already. The movie is so realistic, may be it doesn't create any void to be filled heavily by IR's BGM, although it would have definitely made even more impact I think. The song picturisations are so nice, I was wondering how come there is some much variation in the music for the "En mana vanil" and the "Athorathile", if you see the movie it is well understandable, by the way the song sequences are picturised.
Songs are great to listen, but didn't evoke the same feelings as how KO or RP did and continue to do.
Waiting eagerly for the latest "Azhagi", especially after reading the reviews,
Long live maestro and his great music

"The blind character here is a classical singer and not a musician, a lot of sequences, where IR did a fantastic job" refers to KO movie.

Friends,
Kasi is being remade in Telugu with changes in accordance with Telugu nativity, with the role of Vikram being donned by RP Patnaik, an upcoming music director, (this guy claims to be an ardent admirer of Maestro Ilayaraaja).
If he is so, he should not churn out the same tunes, but come up with new ones.
We are very much tired of waiting for our beloved Raaja's reentry into Telugu, but I cannot explore the reason, why its not happening.
What say, HCIRFs?
