How a music director selects a 'singer' to
sing a song in his films?

Say, IF ARR is music director for some film say
and there are pool of singers male and female
available. On what basis they are chosen?

  There is no hard and fast rules. Normally it is MD consulting with the Director decides on the singer. For example for Rajini they used to prefer SPB. And they used to have the same singer for the complete movie. Artistes and Producers have their saying too. After ARR, each song is sung by a singer (affecting the continuity of the character)

  And I won't be surprised if each paragraph is sung by singer (more variety, you see!)

  STS, What's wrong in making different singers sing for a variety of songs. Your theory on character continuity is absurd. If the director, actor, producer ... agree with this combination and when people (other than STS) accepted it, then where's the question ? Monopoly should stop. This is just like asking a general physician to do a heart surgery when there are heart specialists available.

  You are correct one way that monopoly should stop which means that for one actor there can be one singer whose voice suits him (Or atleast for one movie one singer). Bringing Udit/Sukvindar and others for variety does not make sense, atleast for me. I voiced my opinion (not the opinion of entire TN). I only wish one heart specialist completes the surgery!
  
  Yes, KB/IR were wrong when they insisted on KJY to sing a 'dubba kunthu' song (though SPB was suitable candidate!)

  I think some music directors have some superstitions.In ARR's music, 95% of Unni's songs in Tamil have been sung by Haraharan in Hindi.

  Sometimes Heroes do have a say in selecting singers.Telugu producers have produced Vijay starrer PRIYAMANAVALE and they booked SPB for all songs...But VIJAY made sure most of the songs are re recorded in Hariharan's voice...M.G.R. replaced T.M.S. in few songs with KJY in mid 70's.Rajini also recommends MANO many times....AHAMED.

  I have a feeling that singers will change
  their voice and sing differently
  depending on 'Hero'..On example TMS

  IF I am not wrong, ARR used Sukhwinder only for Thaiyya, Thaiyya. That's fairly needed because it has a punjabi base. Other than that, it is SAR, Yuvan, & Deva to utilize the tamil potential of Sukhwinder. I have to accept your words on Udit. ARR introduced hindi singers, but they are flourishing because of other MDs.

  imo
  1) for big-star-films stars have say in selecting the singers as a.a pointed vijay prefers HH to SPB as his playback singer.
  
  2) for small budgeted film (or) in the films in which MD was to get more money out of what is given to Music dept. then new singers will be used (ARR tactics in many songs nowadays) or singing on own/kith & kins singing (IR e.g. in Friends)
  
  3) for others like song situation and song type the convention is followed (e.g. IR prefers KJY for rich carnatic songs)
  
  bcos the pool of singers mostly comprises of able singers who can sing very well for a given song it happens that 1) and 2) are more common than 3).
