now the break up is like this:
1953 ,the last movie on the list is genoa-MSV's first movie.
1954-1960- 277 films
1961-1965- 205 films
1966-1970- 235 films
1971-1975- 279 films
1975-1980- 414 films(of which 100 were by IR)-so make it 314 for which MSV had access to.
so the total films between 54-when he started -I am sure in a humble manner scoring around 5-10 films in his first 2-3 years to 80,when he was on decline the total movies which were available to himw is around-
tha makes it a total of 1300 films.
Shankar ganesh did score for atleast 250 movies.Devar films never did any films with MSV-KVM had a score of around 350-400 films of which atleast 250 must be in tamil.
so when you include the likes of SMS,sudarsanam, veda,AM rajah-How much is the exact number of films MSV scored for?
That Shankar(ganesh)claims they scored for 1000 movies is a different story.

the above links also will help you.
Mind you I am a keen MSV fan-but I know that this myth is going around that he has scored more than 1000 films. At a conservative estimate he would have done around 400 films.

Hi,
I am not really sure as to how authentic this info about MSV having scored for more than 1000 moveis is, but all that i can tell you is he has definitely scored more than 10000 songs. Thats what SPB had to say in one of the live shows i dubai which i watched on a cassette a decade ago. This might include his music on other languages too. Will update U n this thread once i manage to get more info

The first movie in this list is Chandi Rani. There are two more movies listed before jenova.
The total no may not be above 1000. It can be between 650 to 750.
I too remember that statment by SPB. But we know how much to trust SPB's words.

SPB.. that's what i always wonder.. He sang most of his songs for IR. IR has scored only about 4000 songs. Let us say he has sung 1000 songs for IR, what about the other 34000 songs? He started his career in 60s which means in 40 years he has sung 35000 songs that makes 875 songs every year. Which means nearly 2 songs every day. Hard to believe it..
- From: MS (@ 129.252.25.241)

Awe - It is not very hard to believe. SPB has done 17 or nineteen recordings in a day. And he was the undisputed king in telugu and reigned in kannada too. not hard to believe at all.

It has thrown me in bursts of laughters.
All through the 80's the number of films annually churned out in Taamil has been 200 plus. The 70's were no less prolific. Let us even suppose just 150 per year. And this does not include many unreleased movies every year(which are usually never released).
Here is my personal experience.
I have come accross no less than 35 thousand southern Indian songs. At least 11 thousand each for Kannada and Telugu, 7-8 thousand for Taamil, and 3-4 thousand Malayaalam songs. A huge majority of the songs that I have listened to belongs to 1970-90 period.
Dare I say that at least, let me reiterate, at least 20 thousand were the songs in which SP Baala Subraamnyam's vocals were involved in any capacity -- solo, duets, triets and whatever else. In Kannada and Telugu, I, on many occasions wondered if there was any other vocalist at all, apart from the voluminous, enigmatic SP Subraamaniam. In fact, on occasions, I was fed up with this sheer statistical dominance of a single vocalist, and yearned to hear some ther vocalist as well.
The purpose of narrating this experience is to highlight the number of songs churned out in southern languages, especially in the 70's and 80's. These are the films in Telugoo, Kannada, and Taamil that have propelled the number of films produced in all of India to about 1000 annually for many years. Hindi cinema has seldom made more than 200-250 flicks per year.
Experiencing such huge numbers of films and songs, I have not the slightest of doubt about the numbers atributed to MS Vishwanaathan. He, along with S-G, had quite a respectable share in the Illai Raaja dominated early 80's.

For IR there is a list of movies maintianed by his fans (about 1000 with dubbed movies)
But MSV fans keeep saying this 1000 movies theory... but never come up with a list.
Either MSV did realy score that many or he doesnt have good fans around (who cant even do this minimum thing for thier idol). Sorry no offence.

interestingly, in film fare award for southern state movies (telecasted in Vijay TV, i think) they gave life time achievement award for MSV. During that the anchor (i guess some former miss world) "read-out" that "M.S.Vishwanathan" has score more than 1000 films in southern india language films, which i think MSV didn't dispute (or atleast they did not show anything of that sort).

Kupps:
Like OISG estimated, I think MSV has done
music for around 350+ movies in Thamizh. If you add
some 100+ in other languages, the total may add up
to around 500 at most! There was a list made by
someone in Singapore with some help from Film News
Anandan, about 3 years ago when VR were honored
in a special function. That list certainly did not
cross 500.

I think MSV or any of his friends might not have taken care to keep track of the number of movies he scored. Now even MSV will not be sure of his count. So if they say 1000 he will accept..if they say 500 he will again accept it..:-)

I disagree.Tamil was the most prolific language in south followed by telugu.malayalam and kannada follow.
Just because you say something which you believe in,it necessarily become true.I have given the links there-I have also reasoned why I think MSV has done only these much number of films. The numbers done in the sixties and seventies were only as given above.I think they got film news anandan's help in getting that ,quite impressive and exhaustive list.
I dont have problems with agreeing to stats on SPB-he not only did film songs-but also did a large no of devotional songs-all of which contributed to his tally.
This myth has been repeated so many times that MSV's fans have firmly started to beleive in this.

35000 songs is 'buruda'... I have also sung 1000 songs.. mostly in bathroom. hehehe. If you take that into account.. SPB would have sung 35000 songs.. Vaikku vandha number ellam solla koodathu.. He didn't sing much in the 90s.. His peak period wasi n 70s and 80s... "Peela Masters"... konjam kammi pannikkunga.. may be 15000 songs.. andha madiri.. oreyadia 35000 sonna "kadhula pookoodai" vekkara effect theriyudhu..

Yaaro,
Respectable Sir, what I implied was that one cannot suppose the number of total songs or films to be the same as one can remember the names of. Over the years I have heard thousands upon thousands of songs, from radio, from satellite TV channels like Udaya, Sun, Gemini, but how many songs I vividly remember the wordings of? 10, 30, 80, at most 100. The lyrics of Only the most outstanding ones remain in the mind. But does it mean that it is the total number of songs for any given entity? From Udaya TV, for example, there used to be a total of 8,9 hours of film-songs only programs every day, in 97/98. No less than a 100 songs per day were transmitted at that time. But did I have to remember the lyrics of all the songs to prove that such stupendous numbers of songs really existed? After experiencing so huge number of songs, common sense alone is enough to derive that the total number of songs will only be much higher, not lower than the songs one actually comes across.
As a voice of my conscience, I narrated my personal experience regarding the number of songs in southern India. Not the least of offence was meant.

Yaaro/KK
This counting business will result in MSV getting compared with the likes of Deva,SAR,Chakravarthy ,SG etc.So MSV s genuine fan never goes after counting.
Mine ..350..is a reasonable estimate.
There is another face to MSV s count.MSV-TKR completed lot of films of CR Subbaraman( Devadas for eg) and MSV did a number of movies for SMS ,his master after 1959 without his name on the credits. But even that would not add up to 1000.

OISG,
Let us not go into the numbers game- except for the fact that he(they) is (are)my No 1. dil se.!!
th music of MSV has given me immense pleasure & there are gems in every genre and to suit all my moods including the foulest. that is enough.

OISG,
its not about counting, having filmography/discgraphy listed for any film personality. whats bad about it?. If some one can use a phrase 1000 times..that some one did 1000 films without event thinking about it..is the worst thing, as it is his only credential.

you have echoed my sentiments kk.
MSV is one of my all time favorites(the combination with Ramamurthy had a perfection which I found was missing when either of them went solo)
I mainly brought up this issue because of following reasons-
this is one of the standard arguments used by MSV fans to put down IR fans without any proof (as was done by sathish-he was also being thoroughly derogatory about IR-that is when I decided I have had enough about this 'more than 100 film'business.when you are comparing the numbers IR has almost done twice as much as MSV and ten times as much as ARR.-this was not junk music-atleast 600 movies had very good music..Not the likes of ?chakravarthy or some one in telugu-another tall claim by a MSV or ARR fan who claimed he has done 979 movies(this was before 80's.)Come on guys ,give us a break.Even less films were made in telugu compared to tamil.
moral: when are numbers not important for MSV or an ARR fan? when it involves IR.I even read an article which said IR was being considered for guiness book.
BTW sathish, where are you?
