hi friends,
i just did a small study on our existing topics (non-permanent) as of today. there are 75 topics including some one-time queries and news flashes. there are 17 topics specifically on Ilayaraja mentioned by name on the header, 5 on Rahman which together accounts for one third of all discussions. the rest are on personalities like spb, mano, unnikrishnan, bhavatharini et al. Non-personality topics stimulating healthy discussion accounted for less than 10.
more importantly we see the same kind of worship or abuse getting repeated in different magnitudes or decibel levels by different surfers.
also, we are becoming like the commercial tv channels which show film songs under different titles such then thuli, thuli then, ketta padalgal, netru ketta padalgal, thirai thuli, thirai chuvai etc.
we have topics such as ir copy additha padalgal and soon we will have arr copy additha padalgal which again are not so informative as they serve as vent of bile.
we even have a topic "i am sick of ir arr bashing" where surfers continue to bash either of the MDs. where are we going?
i am sure that the objective of the DF is to enable healthy and educative discussion. can we come up with some topics which will facilitate this objective. there are connoseiurs and knowledgeable surfers who can contribute to elevating our understanding of the technology, process or work that goes behind creating good music. let us learn by getting the fundamentals.
i sincerely hope that this will provoke like minded surfers to deluge the forum with topics that will be intellectually stimulating and educative.

hi friends,
To practise what i am preaching, I am suggesting that we discuss on
"is music direction talent acquired or congenital ?
to elaborate, what are the prerequisites to create music? which of these can be learnt and which cannot be?

All In My Honest Opinion, I mean IMHO
MSV/TKR - Inbuilt Talent and Genious!
IR - Beyond Genious and Inbuilt Talent!
ARR - Genious and externally built Talent!
KR - Externally built talent and Push!
YSR - Push & Talent!
Vidyasagar - Same repetitive Talent!
SA Rajkumar - Artificial Talent!
Last but not the least .....
DEVA - Natural Intelligence! Talent to Xerox!
Isaiamaikka Isai gynanam thevai illa, vaerum

Interesting topic (though one may not chance upon this as the topic is not specified in the header :--))! I think music direction talent is inborn. Even the "kaelvi gnaanam" that Deva has is a kind of talent. Let's just say an average person sat in front of a harmonium or keyboard and decided to make music. There needs to be at least some kind of talent to make it sound different and interesting in film after film. Not many people can do this. You need an ear for music to make a composition that doesn't sound "abaswaram".
That said, I think the average listener doesn't give a rat's behind whether a composition is blazingly original or not. I have a friend from Bombay that I listen to Hindi songs with. I keep trying to play passages of IR's music where I think there is sheer genius at work. He gives a respectful listening... then it's back to whatever's catchy. Even if he discovers that the music has been copied, I doubt that would be something earth-shattering for him. The songs he enjoys are going to remain the songs he enjoys.
That was a digression, but that's probably the reason people like Deva thrive. They are able to produce what listeners want. IR may be breaking new ground with every album, but Deva, with his "kaelvi gnaanam" of IR and co. is talented too.
Coming back to the topic, I would probably agree with Bhaskar's assessment of MDs, though I wouldn't say ARR is a genius. He's very talented, no doubt, but genius is something else altogether.

Bharat:
I agree with you too. Deva also has some Talent!
I said ARR as a genious as he is able to create
Music in his own way with the current technology,
that sounds pleasing to the ears.
He is able to make the tunes Catchy which
is not possible by many MDs. He is able to Mix
and Match the sounds in such a way that in the
end you get a sound that is "Likeable" by lot
of people.
He creates songs in such a way that even
Kids enjoy his songs! Like Musthafa!
Mustahfa! and Columbus! Columbus!.
If is consistent like this for some more years
I would say he is a Genious in his own way.
Though lot of people would disagree with me in
this Forum that "ARR is a Genious"! This is IMO!
A person capable of hitting the cover pages of
all the Tamizh Magazines and giving scores and
scores of Interviews, and making a tremendous
amount of Money in such a short period of time is
adorable.
Friends, don't come and hit me for this comments ...
I am running now, nobody can catch me :-) .........

hi bhaskar and bharat,
the idea of this topic is not to discuss on new topics generated from this topic. if surfers find these interesting, they can evolve as topics in their own right.
the purpose of this provocative topic is to generate healthy, malice free topics which can be spun off as independant topics.
please feel free to share your feelings
