MSV-for eg, was the first md to introdude the concept of performing wuth a troupe on a stage.then there is their famous engey nimmadhi with a massive orchestra.

and one more thing too..
msv was the first md to give a fusion ...
there is an album in which maharajapuram santhanam and msv have performed together... the same carnatic songs but with drums, guitar etc as a "pakka vaadhiyangal"..i dont remember the name of the cassette...
the drums are so good..that at 1 point m.santhanam gets so excited and says "sabaash msv"
i guess arr has the advantage of mass publicity thru cable tv and stuff like that where as msv didnt...

//"i guess arr has the advantage of mass publicity thru cable tv and stuff like that where as msv didnt"//
please as mentioned in the other thread such comments, if avoided, would go a long way in stopping the MD bashing. As a counter point I cud say the media scrutiny on ARR is more(compunded with internet bashing also). With copied songs having more probability of being found! and the industry now involves more money and hence the huge pressure.
Lets assume the advantages of modern times are equally negated by the disadvantages also....

I wud like to point out Mahesh's little contribution to tfm in Nammavar. With that song which does not involvle musical instruments at all. I did not like the song but I appreciated such an effort in his first film itself.
ARR may have made the same effort in "raasathi" in TT. I didnt like this song either :-)

Rahman's "iruvar" the entire album I wud say is a "different effort"
The retro sounds and the imitation of jazz/blues etc was excellent. reproducing mgr kind of songs acceptable to the modern folks was a good effort!

I was just talking about the reach arr has...thanx to the media...and did not attribute his success to the publicity he gets..i do agree that its more of a pressure than an advantage..coz the expectations grow with publicity...
wat i wanted to say is that no one ever heard abt the fusion of msv coz it never got the publicity it deserved...we had only doordarshan and air..not the cable tv and the internet.
the right thing at the wrong time!!!

Bharath, since you said may in your posting, I will let you go :) The song indeed has some base instrument accompanied. Whenever people say that there is no instrumnet in that song, I go crazy. Because you can't be this deaf. If you still think there is no instrument, run to the nearest ear specialist!

i guess that was a humm and not an instrument :-)
if iam not wrong.

Bharath, which was the nammavar song with no instruments ?
'rasathi' from TT had bass guitar.

good point, but applies to Deva & Sirpy more than ARR. They could have passed off their Xeroxes as originals if not for the internet. But AFAIK, ARR does not copy and hence it's not a disadvantage for him.

can the use of western instruments as accompaniments for a carnatic song be called a 'fusion' ? nowadays all carnatic concerts use violin.

i said "may" for good reasons my friend.I subscribe to ur views. I also heard a distinct sound of a digital synthesiser being turned on through out the movie. The same sound thats a common denom. in a lot of ARR's BGM scores. the digital sound is definitely there
I will check the guitar part though!

The reason why we should be amazed at this guy even in 2002 not a single guy can come up with a BGM suitable for a movie. IR has been doing it for 26 years. But not a single soul has an iota of idea about how to effectively score a BGM. My Dear Kuttichathan has wonderful BGM.
"The Hollywood-Bollywood trend continues, even with this film, as the background score by Ilyaraja is really American, and it works! At times it seems out of place, but at others, it is truly a distinguishable positive effect on the movie. The time Santoshi and him have put in surely shows. Cinematography and locations from New York to Uttar Pradesh are a sight for the eyes, especially in Badi Mushkil. "

I'm just wondering is there is any song in which ARR has NOT used a bass guitar or a bass for that matter??

didn't know where to post this:
the "What a waiting" song in Ninaithale Inikkum sounds very much like the psychedelic stuff of Pink Floyd. I was totally taken aback listening to it. the guitar pieces in the middle and the end are awesome. I don't know if there has been a discussion on this already in the archives.
great stuff by MSV!!

Will "En Kaadhalae" fit the description you want? ARR used sax, piano and basic beats in that song. I may be wrong though.

Kaumudi,
Close call .... but if you carefully listen to that song, there is a constant flow of bass throught. I've tried hard to find a song which has no bass. Is he so sceptical about this bass thing??

i feel, ARR wont sound the way he sounds, without bass. Its the bass that makes all the difference and distinguishes him from other MDs, IMO. Call it, the 'Stamp' of ARR ..??

msv made tunes for pudukkavidhai in few films :
(pudukkavidhai already written, tune was made later)
1) unnai enakku pidhiththirukkiradhu from
poikkal kudhirai (valee song)
2) en peyare ennakku marandhu pona from
oru indhiyakkanavu (vairamuththu song)
3) a lenghy song in agnisatchi (valee song)
since, these songs did not become popular, the attempt to make tunes for pudhukkavidhai got discontinued

Normal Man, I think Narumugaye, Ruth Aagye Re, Pyaara Sa gaon(doubtful) have no bass guitar or (synth bass for that matter) in them. But drums are sure there.

I dont know whether IT IS TRUE, but if anybody listens to Ninaithale Inikkum 'Engayeum eppodhum' song has strong base as Ozzy's (Black Sabbath) Iron Man and Paranoid ( i am not saying it is copy, but i have never heard a strong Metal music in tamil music). Gr8 job by MSV
